17-Year-Old Girl Creates Nanoparticle That Kills Cancer, Wins $100,000

When I was seventeen, it was a very good year. Actually, that’s a flat out lie. When I was seventeen I was probably wallowing in self-important despair so trivial that now, years later, I can’t even remember if I was wallowing or not. The point I’m getting at here is that I wasn’t doing anything productive, much less anything that could save countless lives and contribute to a field of science that is more important now than it has ever been. That’s what Angela Zhang was doing, and now, she’s $100,000 the richer for it. Also, she can say she’s created a nanoparticle, one that kills cancer, for what that’s worth (Spoiler: It’s worth a lot).

The $100,000 Zhang earned comes with first prize in the Siemens Competition in Math, Science & Technology. Her project, “Design of Image-guided, Photo-thermal Controlled Drug Releasing Multifunctional Nanosystem for the Treatment of Cancer Stem Cells,” was apparently as complex, thorough, and revolutionary as it sounds.

The nanoparticle Zhang created is already being referred to as something of a “swiss army knife” in the area of cancer treatment. That’s not to say it’s dull and rusty because I you didn’t take care of it when I was you were out camping, but rather that it has a whole bunch of useful applications. The nanoparticle is delivered to tumors via the drug salinomycin where it kills cancer cells and deposits gold and iron-oxide materials to help with MRI imaging.

Not only is this impressive in its own right, but let me remind you this girl is 17. She’s got a lot of time ahead of her. She spent about 1,000 hours developing this particle since 2009 (when she must have been 15) and she wants to continue to study chemical engineering, biomedial engineering, or physics. She hopes to someday be a research professor. Thank god, because if she said she wanted to be a poet, we might have a problem on our hands.

If she’s accomplished this by 17, there’s virtually no doubt we’ll see some further innovations coming from Zhang in the future. In the meantime, just take a moment to think about what you’ve done with your life. But only a moment; any longer than that and it starts to get depressing.

Amazing. At 17, I had invented exactly…nothing. Oh wait, there was the cardboard box robot with a boom box in it’s torso that played my pretaped robot-voice. And I made that when I was 7 –  take that Angela.

  • http://webstravaganza.com Eric Lortie

    Outstanding.

It’s wonderful what younger people can come up with considering they aren’t embedded in an industry predominately controlled by a culture of financial gain over human worth.

Look at the resources big Pharma can bring to bear on something. You think Pfizer wouldn’t have cured cancer by now if it didn’t want? Why ruin one of its greatest cash cows. I’m not saying that the organizations are loaded with people who sit around, plotting Machiavellian schemes to maintain the cancer status quo, but it’s just not a genuine priority. It gets lip service and token funds.

A brilliant 17 year old with innocent and, some would say, naive ideals is incredibly more powerful in the war on cancer than a brilliant and experienced scientist who is funded by a large company that has them working on other things because those things make that company money.

  • thatguy

At 17, the only things I was inventing were grav bongs.

  • http://www.mi7.co/ Angelocracy Xue

It should be God not god. ( Thank god, because if she said she wanted to be a poet, we might have a problem on our hands.)

  • Beefpatty

Who cares about how young she is tell me more about this particle, not that it’s just “worth alot”/

  • Angelgirl1644

sooooooooooooooooo is there is cure for cancer or what???

  • anonymous

Oh great, now every human on earth is worthless because we couldn’t figure out the cure for cancer, let’s all thank this woman, we should just kill ourselves because we are failures.

  • Jake123455

where’s the unlike button? Why have cancer rates steadily declined for the past 50 years?

  • http://webstravaganza.com Eric Lortie

Did I, at any point, indicate we were not working on trying to cure cancer? No. Don’t be extreme. Of course we’re making process.

If you want to re-read my comment, you’ll see that I’m saying big Pharma is dragging their heels because of how much revenue they stand to gain as a direct result of cancer. Curing cancer outright will result in them losing a TON of money.

Dragging your heels doesn’t mean you stop, or you go backwards. It means you go forward more slowly.

  • Shaun Mason

Eric, this is an old take on a tired conspiracy theory.  Cancer is many diseases, and there is not going to be a single cure for it. Curing a cancer will make a fortune for the people able to do it, not the other way around.  People will still get cancer, and they’ll come paying for a cure.  There is no advantage to dragging their heals, the competition to advance cancer treatment is unbelievably fierce and does not allow for heel dragging.  The advances are being made in university labs, funded in part by Pharma, but not enough for them to be able to carry out the grand scheme you’re describing. Yours is a common misconception.  Anyone who can cure a cancer is going to make untold amounts of money.  Pharma will not lose a ton of money, they’ll have a new revenue stream that is iron-clad and will continue as long as humanity does.

  • Gmaturi

While the kids in the science fairs and competitions do a lot of the work, it is usually  someone sponsoring who helps (or comes up with the idea) who also has access to the necessary resources and material to do it. I doubt a 17 year old student had acess to the lab and the setup to do something this complicated.

The war on Cancer is a joke….and the joke is on the people who have been going against nature by eating up all this food by science crap they have been feeding people for the last 100 years. There has been a cure for ever and a day, it’s the food you’re eating stupid, if you eat natural whole organic fruit and vegetables you can cure cancers. What this naive brilliant young girl invented was a way for the present controllers to have more control over the already enslaved population. Wake up…They don’t want to cure CANCER anymore more than they want to cure the banking industry(see 13 trillion dollar bailout), it’s a Trillion dollar industry. When are the morons going to wake up from the chemical food diets, poisoned air, fluoridated water(see the last guy to use this tactic HITLER), and depleted poisoned soils to see the truth? A land that only 250 years ago was in pristine condition! When will they awaken from their ZOMBIE slumber and realize that the inhabitants are the ones killing themselves? Giving themselves Dis-EASE! This girl has done nothing to free the enslaved race of morons, they will just use this to have more control over you.

  • Anonymous

They haven’t…1 in 3 women will get cancer and that increases in males to 1 in 2. So wake up!

  • Anonymous

Cancer has been exploding!! I don’t know what planet you live on?

  • Anonymous

I have to laugh really hard at your comment. There is already a cure for cancer and has been around for the last 90 years. It’s your food dumbo. Food by science has been a horrible experiment. Fresh whole organic fruit and vegetables will cure most cancers and the rest is up to the individual to find the root cause in themselves. Go read Dr. Max Gerson

    Congratulation Angela Zhang!

  • Nthib91

WOW! Very impressive indeed! I’m guessing she got into a university early through outstanding performance, because there is no way she could have made research advances like this with a high school lab. She really deserves far more than $100,000 but I guess she has tons of money yet to make when this treatment is fully perfected .

  • Nopal

Amazing! discovery. brings lots of hope to millions.

Amazing that the person writing this article, that I find so serious and amazing, tries to make this a  comical report and I can see where is this funny. As a matter of fact, I think it is idiotic to try and be funny rather than informative, serious about something so important.

  • http://twitter.com/malixe malixe

Remarkable achievement for a girl of that age. I’m reminded of Tom Lehrers’ line from ‘Alma’… “It’s a sobering thought for example, that when Mozart was -my- age…he had been dead for two years.”

  • Drsand1

Actually, Eric is right. You see as soon as a cure for cancer is found, the person/company that has that cure will be forced to distribute it. Once it’s distributed every Pharma company will get their hands on it and recreate it. Cancer pills will sell for $4 a bottle like Advil or Tylenol. No single entity (besides the human race!) stands to gain from a cancer cure. The prescription drug industry feeds on the mass populous and it’s lobby base is far too powerful (combined with the overwhelming stupidity of our country) to change the politics, ethics & business model currently in play…Shaun, “conspiracy theory” is the naive, closed minded persons “take” on the REAL WORLD and how big business, greed & corruption DON”T rule it…

Awesome, that’s a good news story for sure.  But, hey, what’s with the dig on poets?  A good poet can effect just as many lives as a cancer-curing nanoparticle.  Pick on some other vocation would ya? ;-)

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3CR4FVV5EIZOW7X66A5U5HZO5U swtcherrypop

Eric, you need more education in the field of oncology before you can go about making ridiculous and fraudulent claims. Firstly, a huge chunk of cancer research is done outside of the private sector, through university and government funded research. These researchers have no vested interest in “maintaining the death rate of cancer.” Secondly, cancer is a disease of multifactorial inheritance. It is a remarkably complex disease which will probably never have an absolute cure. Until you actually know what you are talking about, please keep your fingers off your keyboard.

  • Spamdeflector

They have not declined. The 5 year survival rate has gone up because cancer is generally found earlier. Sorry, but the lie of the rates going DOWN is a lie! Plain and simple!  Imaging is better…. used to be that the person got really sick, lost weight etc… they would do “exploratory surgery” to see what was wrong… perhaps they could remove the cancer or not….

The “cure” will be things like this and better prevention. The pharma companies will suppress it as much as possible! It will not get FDA approval but hopefully she will sell it or make the company herself to sell it! They will not be allowed to state that it is a “cure” or the feds will come busting the doors down just like all the doctors that are actually saving peoples lives when the medical FDA approved drugs are not!

  • Zaratose

Eh, congrats genius girl. Even if you make everyone else look like they don’t deserve to be proud of their childhood. I’ll remember to use this if I ever have kids that do like I do and say, “I’m eighteen, I’m supposed to enjoy this part of my life, not work hard.” Ill answer, “I read about a girl who developed a cancer killing nanoparticle at your age. You’re already way behind!”

  • Rachael

This is absolutely wonderful, but I have a problem with one aspect of the article.

“She hopes to someday be a research professor. Thank god, because if she said she wanted to be a poet, we might have a problem on our hands”

I’m just not sure why being a research professor is a more respectable position than being a poet, although both are certainly much more prestigious fields than writing crappy web articles.

….and watch the evil Drug Companies find ways to put a stop to it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mark-Trance/608441362 Mark Trance

While there are many forms of Cancer that attack many areas of the body, Cancer is not many diseases. It is Cancer. It has very specific characteristics. While you are correct that there will probably not be a single cure for it, that does not let Big Pharma off the hook. Big Pharma does in fact spend it’s money and research dollars concentrating on drugs and procedures that it can copyright and profit from. It is no different from any other business. In so doing there are discussions of profitability among various and sundry components of “big Pharma” . This discussion, along with an overt act, such as funding or defunding research is in fact conspiracy in it’s purist definition. It is inherent in a profit based system that the attention of the participants will be directed to the profit making potential. This is just what it is. Eric is simply pointing this out, along with the fact that it was NOT big pharma that came up with this, but a 17 year old girl probably without such a huge money motive. We live in a world of conspiracies. A conspiracy is 2 or more persons making a plan and then taking at least one overt action towards realizing that plan. Unfortunately conspiracy has been tarnished in recent history…any concurrence in action; combination in bringing about a given result.

  • http://twitter.com/RonPaulsBulldog Thomas Jefferson

I would RATHER be cured of my cancer and have no good poetry available, than be lying on my deathbed because of cancer but have lots of excellent poetry to read.  That’s why research is more important than poetry you dumbasses

  • Imnotjustugly

Excellent. We will need plenty of new cancer cures once our environment becomes flooded with nanoparticles.

  • Naturallyspun

A vegan diet will prevent and reverse some cancers, but for those who choose to ignore the base causal factors: meat, dairy, pesticide laden foods, and the continued pollution of our planet, well at least there are young people out there with nanoparticles to cover your butts.

  • http://www.facebook.com/EvanRowe Evan Rowe

It is a decent institutional analysis to suggest that profit seeking institutions will not seek to ruin profit streams.  It doesn’t follow however that there aren’t ways to monetize cures for cancer.  And I do agree, at least since it’s the current fad, to view cancer as multiple diseases (i.e. there is no single “cancer” but countless variations on it).  But beyond this, if you look at just this story, the types of things being produced for rewards (i.e non profit stream types of things) are very small at the development stage.  Most of the core research is done in the public sector, and then it is spun off into private sector types of drugs after the fact.  That is where the pharma case is so weak, because the bulk of their profitable drugs are not in cancer but are in curing larger market areas of their symptoms.

And by larger market I simply mean more people.  More people die in the U.S. each year of heart disease related illnesses than EVERY FORM OF CANCER COMBINED.

Even if you don’t think the market is producing a good product (I tend to agree in the U.S.) the public sector is delivering the bulk of the research with much much less power and control over the financial space (business is given a much bigger space in which to inject and direct resources into the economy).

  • Nobody

THE ARTICLE DOES NOT CONFORM TO MY POLITICAL VIEWS. MUST SUPPRESS. HEIL RON PAUL.

  • VictoriaB

This is certainly a topic that gets people up in arms, shall we say, as they just can’t wrap their heads around the fact that cures for cancer already exist. Big Pharma would indeed lose a ton of money if we had a *health care* system as opposed to our current *sick care* system. Mainstream people – who believe what media has fed to them – don’t typically think to question what they are fed. They believe Western medical dogma of ‘take a pill’ to feel better. They don’t believe that adequate water intake and proper nutrition including a high percentage of raw foods can reverse most ‘medical conditions’ which are simply manifestations of a person’s thought processes, albeit on a subconscious level. Yes, your arthritis and obesity is the result of a thought process. Your migraines and food allergies, your cancers and diabetes – all the result of deep subconscious thoughts. Change your thoughts, change your reality. Yes, I’m working on this as well.

Back to the point though, a huge congrats to Angela Zhang for her dedication to her passion and bringing her gifts to the world of healing. Way to go, and keep it coming!

I don’t understand this comment. Aine was complementing her!?

  • guest

Keep in mind.  While her innovation is amazing, cancer is far from cured.  Cancer is a very complex disease, and on top of that there are multitudes of different types of cancer.  What does curing cancer even mean?  I know people that have been “cured” of cancer through chemotherapy or surgical removal.  Drug companies will back anything if it can make them money, sure.  You don’t think a drug that “cures” cancer would be the biggest breakthrough in science in the past century?  I’m pretty sure Pfizer would make that drug if they knew how.  Basically, even though you have good intentions with your comment, I feel you are ignorant to basic science and to pharm companies.  What do you think those other scientists are working on anyway? There are lots of other diseases that require attention too…

  • yaowah

Tell that to the people dying from it. I’m sure they will appreciate your comment but may also tell you “been there, done that.”

I have no doubt that a healthy lifestyle or even an alternative therapy can contribute positively to cure cancer but I doubt very much we could call it a cure per se. Also, I cannot deny that the pharmaceutical industry plays it’s nefarious role in order to maximize it’s profits based on the pain and suffering of others: The more prolonged the therapy the better.
But we will get there eventually, this girl’s work is a huge step in that direction. One day it will be as simple and common as swallowing a pill and make cancer go away.

  • Aleshamacd

I hear you Eric.  I think it’s great because you’re right, it’d almost have to be someone that isn’t funded for cancer research to find a cure.  It’s too bad that it seems all that ‘cancer research’ money is going to scientists (owned by corporations) instead of on Zhang.  Perhaps one individual that doesn’t need to be bought will be the only one that can create the cure.  (and then watch out for the Big Dogs!)

Thanks Zhang!  I think you’ve proven that everyone else is twiddling their fingers with Billions of dollars cash.  I think we should have a Zhang fund and put those millions and billions behind someone actually producing results!  Anyone?

  • Saiiyah

Okay let me put the stupid comments above into some perspective for those who obviously don’t have enough. Some people get humor. Some people don’t. Obviously Guest 1 doesn’t. Back to the story now. This young 17 year old is amazing and I hope to hear about her in the future!

  • Anonymous

Joint Striker….I’m not here to Sugar Coat the truth. In most cases by that time it is to late. See most people have to ask themselves do they really want to live? Or do they want to continue down the path of causing Pain and Dis-Ease to their organism? Studies show only 2 out of 10 people really want to live when push comes to shove, they have a really hard time giving up what is killing them i.e. cigarettes, bad foods, stress, etc. So the people dying from cancer have in most cases(excluding environmental) done it to themselves which as you stated in your comment they won’t be glad to hear that. Cancer is just a strong signal to the being/organism to stop what they are doing of the intelligence of the organism will end it for you. You choose life or death in everything you do while you are here in the illusion called earth. You sound life all the programed sheep who have been conditioned to rely on your MASTERS for a cure and have forgotten how powerful you are. Good luck finding the NEXT pill to pop and the next scientific cure to come out, instead of letting the one and only true MASTER healer your own body heal itself. You have lost faith in the most beautiful and magnificent organism which has ever been created, because you can’t give up your cultural stories and your cultural eating habits, living habits, and just sit in quiet and listen to what your body needs. When you awaken from your slumber in this life or the next you will UNDERSTAND:)

  • Saiiyah

This Dr Max Gerson raises some big bullshit alarms in my head personally. For one small example since I can only fit so much in this text box, “The scientific basis for the use of coffee enemas is well
documented”. No, no it’s not. It’s been shown not to work. I’m not gonna cite proof in this, but I’m gonna encourage you to read skeptic websites like the friendly atheist and pharyngula and What would JT do. They, along with other sites, generally debunk this shit under real medical evidence, which they directly cite from good medical resources (pharyngula has direct access to medical everything).

  • Rita

Um, hi other Guest. Since you missed the point (don’t worry – it happens to us all sometimes), I’ll enlighten you.

Aine was making a comment to point out how brilliant Angela Zhang is. To do this, Aine compared Angela Zhang’s achievements to her own – in a humorous self-derogatory manner. She was not bragging. In fact she was being modest, displaying her own lack of scientific achievement at that age in comparison to that of Ms Zhang.I hope this explanation helps you in your ongoing efforts to not be a complete fucking moron.

    Hi Alien99.

    Luke

  • Fred

lighten up buddy.. are you ok? what’s the real problem going on in your life?

  • http://webstravaganza.com Eric Lortie

I dunno, how does it feel to know your sole contribution to this discussion has been to crap on people with snide, useless comments? I bet that makes you feel really awesome.

I responded to someone else with a rather long post, including detailed financial information from various sources, but it doesn’t seem to have passed moderation because I linked to external sites (WHO oncology research statistics, Pfizer financial records, etc).

I’m hoping the moderation queue is just really long and the post will appear eventually. Some of that data was a little old and I had to estimate, but I always estimated in favor of the opposite side of the argument because I’m truly certain I’m not biased about this, and confident enough to skew things against me as a result of that.

Anyway, feel free to do about 10 minutes worth of Googling and look at the numbers. (How much Pfizer has made, how much from the private sector gets spent on oncology, etc).

You say I’m wrong because you feel your opinion is fact. That’s madness, what are you basing it on? Certainly, nothing concrete enough to reference. I’ve claimed that oncology research isn’t anywhere near the forefront of the money being spent by the pharmacological industry and there’s a ton of data that backs up my claim.

I’d call you a troll, but you’re just a smug douchebag who runs around being a dick to people in website comments because of your own personal inadequacies. Look at your contribution to these comments. It must have been terrible going through your childhood, never learning to play with others.

  • blahblahblah

Aight this is impressive, but unfortunately she didn’t create the particle, she proposed a mixture of particles that were already in use. She didn’t invent Iron-oxide or gold nanoparticles guys– nor did she invent salinomycin. Salinomycin itself being a known cancer inhibition drug. Not only that but we have to question the girls real importance, Salinomycin is extremely toxic which is why it’s not used for anything at all, this girls mixture could therefore be toxic as well. Since the drug mixture that she’s proposed hasn’t even been tested on anyone, she hasn’t really done anything. Anyone can propose a drug cocktail and say ”ya know this should do blah blah blah”  it takes a scientist who’s older than 17 and has gone to a legitimate institution to say ”ya know this drug is kinda dangerous, we should test it out to see how effective it really is”..

Everyone do your fucking research before you bathe in the cum bath of ignorance, quit holding people up as if they are gods when they haven’t really done anything.

Wow, you really know nothing about the immune system. My mother has an autoimmune disease. You wanna know why? BECAUSE THEY RUN IN OUR FAMILY. you can’t tell me diseases are just the result of negative thinking when a good bloody chunk of them are in our genes from day one.

    Luke, I love you…… :):):):)

Luke yes nature is King and I’m not saying Science does not have it’s place or can’t help, or come up with some great solutions, but not under the current model. The current model is not free…it is controlled by Big Business and the scientists are controlled and told what to say. If you don’t understand this then the conversation is over until you do. Peace

At 17 I invented the internet, oops, Gore beats me to it. Well , I remember now, it was such a long time ago, it is not the internet, it was the blackberry; just don’t say McCain beat me to it. may be he does. How about I-phone? Yea that was it. I invented the I-phone. As far as I know, no one claim the credit for I-phone yet. No Job never said he invented the Iphone. besides Job is dead. It doesn’t count. When next i am 17, I will create facebook 17.0

    Congratulations Zhang.

Once the cancer cells have been plugged with gold you can heat them with radio waves and kill them. You can be cancer free with ZERO side effects.

What about max Gerson? He found the cure for cancer years ago, This is an interesting a article dont get me wrong this girl is rather intelligent but the best way to prevent cancer is good nutrition an exercise. I cant imagine there has been many test on this. I’m sure it is bound to have some kind of side effect that out weigh the pro’s.

  • Smolsen

    phenomenal!
    does Siemens own it now?

Good on her! But which type of cancer does it kill? Since its a “swiss army knife”, does it kill all of them? Can we use it now for breast cancer, multiple myeloma, brain tumors? Let’s get this shit cooking!

  • Rachel Gitlevich

That is really impressive. Totally continuing to uphold the Asian stereotype, but fuck good for her! My best friend died of cancer this summer, and I just wanna go up to Angela and give her a hug :o

  • Beerpig

So at the very top of the intellectual world is Zhang, and a few incredible people like her.

Most everyone is somewhere in the middle.  The people in the middle group are smart enough to know that Zhang has profoundly unusual potential, but we can only watch.  Most people fall in this category.

Then towards the bottom of the curve, there are those who don’t really understand much of anything at all.

Much as can be seen as demonstrated by this story and the comments made about it.

  • Zeitgeistid

Ummmm……I took my am radio at 16 and duct taped it to my bicycle…and wrote bad poetry…yeah, sad.

damn is all i have to say. this girl is awesome  hopefully she will find the knockout punch for all cancer  in our lifetimes

  • Guest

LOL if it REALLY KILLS cancer cells…  What she developed only helps with MRI scans for cancer treatment, it doesn’t give a rat’s ass about actually killing cancer cells, I can do the same thing with a syringe, food coloring and a regular MRI scan, all she did was taking technology that already existed and tell the world what we already knew, Not worth it.

To be fair there have been literally hundreds of articles on this stuff (one might only search for ‘cancer nanoparticles in pubmed to find out). Although I am unclear on the merits of this young woman’s work, this idea has been floated around for quite some time and has been largely deemed impractical.

Wow! I wonder how much money she spent creating it and what lab she used? Did she have funding? Pharmaceuticals say that emds cost so much because of all the money it took to research and create? I wonder how much a single 17 yo girl spent? I am in awe for so many reasons.

  • Istretchwork

I agree with your statement. Cancer as well as HIV should definitely be cured by now. Big business pharm companies aren’t seeking a cure, they’re making drugs that delay the onset of terminal effects so they can keep collecting checks.

  • Caitrin1026

glad to see some one is trying to do something to get rid of cancer, i just wish it could have happen before we lost my mom to it almost 3 years ago. this girl is going places! it is also good to know that this world has a future with smart ambitious people that have hearts!

Good Luck Angela.  Please don’t let some mega-pharmaco absorb you and shuffle you off to a lab creating cures that they control and use to extort the market-balanced segment of the public that can afford it.

I can say that Aine was actually complementing her for her success at 17, I know at 17 I sure wasn’t thinking of making a nanoparticle to cure cancer!  She should get more the 100,000 if you ask me.  People like Angela are amazing, I wish I could be as creative and educated to do something like this.  I am way older and have not accomplished much but a good job and a roof over my head for my children and I.  Thats about it!!  Way to o Angela!  I have family and friends who have died of cancer and this clearly hits my heart. Angela thank you for all your hard work.

people in her life who helped make it possible for her to focus.

  • Goldfinger

Even better, if it leaves gold particles concentrated in the tumour, they can be used to attack it too.  This might sound a bit crazy, but if you can heat up the particles they will kill the cancer cells around them.  If you can deliver gold into the nucleus of a cancer cell it dies.  The difficulty with these technique has always been getting the gold particles into the tumour and not anywhere they might cause damage.

    Is this true?

  • guest

Although what she had achieved was impressive, particularly for her age, it is not somthing that is worth more than 100,000 for. It is very difficult creating nonparticles especially at 17, but cancer killing compounds are extremely common. Bleach, fire, acid, chemotherapy, hammers, explosives can all kill cancer but kills ordinary cells aswell. If her nonparticle could kill cancer cells but not normal cells then she would be getting a nobel prize not a 100,000 reward from siemans.

  • Anonymous

It makes you wonder where all those billions went in cancer research… if a 17 yr old kid could do it in 1000 hrs, why couldn’t ALL those high paid researchers??

you’re all fucking bent, trying to use big words..little queers

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! This girl should have recieved a lot more than 100,000 for something so absolutely amazing!! Here there are thousands of scientist that have been working for years and years on finding cures and this 17 year old girl spend about 1000 hours (which doesn’t seem like a whole lot when you figure some scientist have spent their whole lives trying to accomplish what this girl at 17 has done) and I personally think she should have recieved a LOT more for this than 100,000 dollars!

  • Surazeus Simon Seamount

I admire Angela. So I had to laugh in delight when I saw a cartoon of “tiger mom” who says, “So you cure cancer at 17. What take you so long!”

If this invention is as important as Seamen’s makes it out to be, and it cures all cancers across the board, then Angela better be prepared for a massive attack from the AMA and the FDA. The fact is radiation and surgical therapies are too big to fail. Any outside cancer remedies will never be approved. Case in point, Dr. Burzynski, invented antineoplastins, more than 20 years ago, when he patented it. Antineoplastins, are administered through I.V., are non evasive, with absolutely no side effects. To this date it has not been approved by the FDA. Dr.Burzynski has been subjected to 7 Congressional hears, that was seven, all of which he won. The AMA and the FDA have tried and failed seven times at the highest level to discredit his invention. If that isn’t totally outrageous, they somehow broke his patent and stole his invention.

Watch your language missy. You need soap in your mouth, because your parents obviously didn’t raise you right. Why are you so grumpy? I like what the one girl said, and atleast I understand it, unlike you miss cranky pants. Read a dictionary or something; you’ll notice if you’re a little intelligent it will help you a lot in life :)

  • rudolf

by the way, that last comment was to you with the bad language. Anyways, I meant to add in that she did an amazing thing, helping the world out sooo much!!!  And the comment about not understanding what Aine said is pretty sad, because it’s pretty obviouse what’s she’s trying to say. IT IS A COMPLIMENT, just read it again, or ask for help. I don’t mean to be  hurtful, but if you want to get helpful answers (ones that don’t have comments with bad language in them) you might want to ask someone at home.  Oh, and you might not want to say your real name if you did, cuz people can track you and/or your picture. Well, bye! :)

Hey Dddoo, if you’re so confused then look them up in a dictionary, because you obviously need to improve your vocabulary.By the way, you might want to start by WASHING YOUR MOUTH OUT!!! And please, at least put in the effort to atleast capatilze ….smirk..

  • rudolf

Luke, I love the comment, but you could make a point, probably more meaningful, without the cuss word. By the way, sarcasm works- it’s nice to know you used it. hahahaha

  • rudolf

and what are you supposed to be, miss svetlinka 100? because obviously it was a compliment. I guess, no, i know, you don’t understand sarcasm. Why don’t you go get some help sweetie – you know, what you so drastically need. why don’t you go read a book, so you can understand what you’re actually saying. Then you can go try and figure out what other people are trying to get through. Why don’t you go read Luke’s comment…smirk…:(

  • Ang

Hope the Pharmaceutical Companies don’t buy it out and it doesn’t get used!

  • Guestron2000

It’s spelled “capitalize”. You should worry about your own typing before criticizing other people. And “swear words”, like any words, are only “bad” based on context.

Example: “This shit is amazing.” would be a compliment to whatever it is being referred to and, based on context, is not bad; whereas saying “You are a fucking idiot.” IS bad.

Not because of the word “fucking”, but because it is being used as an insult. Simply “You are an idiot” isn’t much better, but adding ‘fucking’ to it makes the word ‘idiot’ stronger. You can even use words that are completely non-insulting, and based on tone can be condescending or insulting, but that is hard to express through text.

To summarize what we’ve learned today: WORDS aren’t bad, INTENTIONS are. And you seemed to be pretty condescending with your comments.

  • http://www.facebook.com/joshAK47 Josh Baldwin Knutson

This is a stolen idea…  John Kanzius had this idea but also used radio waves to excite the metals to accelerate the processes.  Congrats on re-tooling an existing, non-patented adventure.  A future artist in patent theft and corporate greed.  That’s government material.

  • Superanonymous

the 100,000 dollars is nothing compared to the attention she is getting. right now some of the most elite company’s in the world have their eye on her. thats what really matters.

  • Arthur

So the girl gets $100,000. Her parents are obviously stupid because if she had patented her idea she would be the next Bill Gates. This idea is worth hundreds of billions of dollars which Siemens is now going to make.

  • poor kid

screw that i wouldnt have taken 100k thats way too little i mean like thats a cure for something we have been tryin to fix for decades she should have gotten at least 2 million and been able to sit on her ass for the rest of her life and buy a brand new car every year

  • Under.Lie

A truly amazing discovery on her part. But I cannot help to wonder, if one 17 year-ols girl can produce this revolutionary particle, with limited resources and a short amount of time on this earth, why have millions of dollars, cancer runs, pink ribbon donations and such GLOBALLY, and many scientists with access to every type of equipment imagined not even come close to any solutions? I have nit heard of any considerable progressions on the part of the “official cancer researchers”. This is saddening, and also very alarming to me. Where does all of the “cancer research” money really go? Take a look at the salaries that these supposed “cancer research” corporations actually rake in. Surely things are not as they appear.

  • Dave

The fact that hundreds of millions of dollars have been spent to find a cure for cancer and to have a workable cure discovered by a 17 year old girl is absolutely unbelievable. Where does all the money really go? This high school student probably had a budget of pocket change by comparison. All right scientific community, fess up, what have you been doing for the last several decades.. It only took Angela around 1000 hours to do her research,.

  • your so right

  • Atrophy boy

My question is why no one is running with it! Diagnosed with terminal stomach cancer this year and all but trying to keep myself alive and all you A-holes can do is talk about who can and can’t take a joke.  Seriously????

If this little girl did do something with a potential cure then someone needs to grab it and run with it but I’ll guarantee you that the FDA will never allow it.

Instead they insist on killing my nerve endings with a patented drug from 1957.

Billions and billions of fund raising dollars and satellites that can cruise the world giving you the exact location of a nat but we can’t solve the worlds biggest killing machine called cancer!

Imagine the corporate financial loss if they were actually able to find a cure.

No wonder why everyone just swept this under the table and chalked it up to winning a contest instead of delving into it.

Keep eating all of the tainted and nutritionally depleted food they keep serving up here is the US and perhaps you too will find a bigger reason to worry about this discovery than who can take the biggest joke.

    Signed-Terminally pissed at the US.

well i think youn did a great job girl keep it up

  • Rose_thomas1

that was only her reward for winning the science fair. she can patent the drug and sell it for billions. but i think nature is better left alone… except for deer. i like deer.

    congratulations!

Actually, with support from people such as faculty and staff, students are able to get into science labs for things such as internships by using what resources they can if they’re motivated to do so. Something tells me that Ms. Zhang was motivated enough, and had the resources to gain access to a lab. Y’know…since she made a nano-particle. Perhaps she even used her school’s Chem lab, but probably something more along the lines of outsourcing to a college campus’s lab where she could have discussions with the professors and seek their advice

Why haven’t they cured Cancer yet?

Because Cancer is the category under which many Cancers fall.

I don’t buy the conspiracy theory, either.

I mean, how many people have Cancer now?
How many of those people spend millions trying to cure it?

Why wouldn’t it be in the best interest of pharmaceutical companies to create a drug that costs an exorbitant amount of money to cure a disease that I’m sure many of the executives have personally been affected by? Everyone has been affected by Cancer. It doesn’t do anyone any good not to share the cure. If not solely for the good publicity and interviews the company would reap.

  • Wizmorley

I AGREE SHE SHOULD BE SET UP FOR LIFE WITH A DISCOVERY LIKE THAT INSTED SOME GREED POLITICAN WILL GET THE MONEY

  • Darthvader211

This is an amazing development, but I can already see it’s future.  There is no money for this to drug companies.  Why?  Because drug companies make money by putting you on a medication that you are going to be taking for the rest of your life.  To them the question is, why would we produce something that cures cancer when we can make a drug that will keep someone with cancer alive as long as they take the drug?  Greed will prevail unless she can sell this to someone who wants to market a cure for cancer.  Same thing happened to the doctor in Texas who supposedly developed a cure.  He has finally been acquitted of all charges the drug companies brought against him, but now he has no money to continue on doing phase I, II, and III trials and toxicology because of the wonderful drug companies.

Don’t you just love the world we live in?

  • Suck It

Dude I feel so depressed.  Maybe she’ll invent a cure for depression induced by breathless naive writers who insult their audience because they’re too vapid to contemplate that geniuses like this girl are off-the-charts brilliant and it’s OK for an average Joe to live a normal life.

She’s amazing…..Im glad to have such gifted intelligent people in our world!!!!!She is making life better for all of us and our grandchildren!!!

  • ENGLISH TEACHER

Maybe we should replace all our “experienced researcher’s” with high school kids. Do you the feeling that “finding a cure for cancer” has been a very profitable for job for so many people, that they don’t WANT to find a cure – they would lose all that MONEY. Congratulations to ANGELA ZHANG ! ! !

When I was seventeen, all I was doing was inventing new things to smoke out of. This girl has great potential.

rage on the Internet.  nothing to see here, move along

Call me cynical, but we will never hear another word about this cancer cure or any other because too many billions of dollars will be lost in the current treatments and medicines used to treat cancer symptoms. Watch, in a year from now people won’t even remember her or her efforts. Siemens will buy the information and simply put it in a file and make it go away. It’s called protection. It happens a lot. For example, about 2 years ago a 12-14 year old boy won a similar school project with a hexagon or octagon shaped solar panel that would increase the amount of solar energy from a single panel by 20x or something like that. You can’t even find this kids existence on google. patents get bought up and put on a shelf. watch! This article will be the 1st and last you ever hear about the “groundbreaking” cure for cancer.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Wehms2 Alan R. Wehmer

Noooo, the REALLY sad thing is that it will not get put to good use………..my parents both worked for numerous doctors, (Dad as a CPA and Mom as a collections specialist) and they all said pretty much the same thing:  “They’ll NEVER “cure” cancer because there’s too much money being made in the treatment of cancer…….”  (boo)

  • OHYABUD!

She has my deepest envy. When I first saw this I was like, “DAMN IT SHE BEAT ME TO IT!” But seriously good job to her, this will be a huge inspiration for me to try towards my goal.

  • Felix1923

100k is nothing!!!! thats gunna save a bunch of lifes and only gunna get that amount of money thats crazy..

  • omagio

hmmm  i need to find something to do with my life really is depressing to see a “kid”  if thats what she is with that much smarts and effort

No doubt from a rich family, oh the wonders humanity would create if they all had access to the best universities and the equipment they posses.
There is simple cure for cancer… Oxigen. Cancer cells cannot live in an oxigenated environment. Doctors have used hypobaric oxigen chambers, but it’s expensive, oh wait, there is a virtually free alternative discovered almost 40 years ago. Hydrogen Peroxide, that results in a massively increased oxigenation level in the cells.. hence, killing cancer… not patentable ofcourse.

  • Danipoo69

We need to stress that these were laboratory experiments, and there is no
evidence yet that salinomycin can treat cancer in humans. Salinomycin is
currently used as an antibiotic for chickens and cows, and it can be
toxic or even fatal to humans, causing serious muscle and heart problems

  • Carlos

i would have gave her millions of dollars.. and its messed up that they dont use the cure and there are people dying from cancer everyday. the government is such a scam asking to donate money, it all goes to the government thats why they dont want to use the cure in pharmacies,

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Rusty-Ray/100001225255597 Rusty Ray

I hope she patented this and can make it available for a far less cost than any medical insurance company can. This is great if it can be affordable for all! It is about time cures start coming out instead of constant medicines that fix nothing and line the pockets of big pharma. The cures are out there, but the money is in sick people coming back for more and more medicine. People over profit. Phizer and Merck can go F themselves.

  • Davislisa123

When will her girl hit the trial world.  I have stage four and I am out of options.  I will even try it for her.

  • Saudiboy89

at 17….I learned how to make a flesh light…using gloves towel and a duct tape

  • Corinne

More power to you Miss  Zhang. Certainly you are an acheiver and a gift to the world.

  • sid

sound kinda werid. I have been making nanoparticles for cancer detection and therapy in the lab for a long time. Its no big deal. Takes 3-4 hours tops, if you know what you are doing. And my lab also colaborates with siemens on different cancer detecting platforms. Was it a scholarship sort of incentive to for college, thats the only thing I can guess. And by the way nanoparticels have been around for a long time now. she did invent any thing new, just won science project, that was probably only for high school kid or something.

  • Anna

hey this is Anna from that is so cool that she made something that kills cancer OMG thats so cooooooooool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • jaleesa

well i have a mother with cancer and i just wanna kno does this actually work and why arent doctors offering this to paients as a form of treatment or to cure them?? I will be doing more research on this because of it can help my mother i will try anything.

  • http://www.facebook.com/nicholas.ernst Nicholas Ernst

It’s absolutely incredible that she has accomplished this at 17.

Too bad some pharmaceutical company will buy the patent from her and blackhole it so that they can keep making infinite money off of chemo and other such ‘maintenance’ instead.
