50 Common Misconceptions Debunked in About Six Minutes

At Geekosystem, we love knowing stuff. We’re not too picky on what that stuff is, we just want to cram as many facts into our heads as quickly as possible. That’s why we love Mental Floss, and particularly love their new video debunking 50 common misconceptions. They just launched a YouTube channel this week, and if this is the kind of stuff they’ll be putting out then we’re pumped. Take a few minutes to find out which common held “facts” are actually bogus so next time someone brings one up you can correct them and feel like a real smarty pants.

Al Gore never claimed he invented the internet, he said “During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet.” Which is totally different…. Right?

Yes. When he said that he was referring to the fact that he introduced the Supercomputer Network Study Act of 1986, which paved the way for what we know as the Internet.

Maybe I’m missing something but I can’t find anything showing that bill ever made it out of committee.

He did introduce another bill that actually went somewhere, but could you say you cured cancer if you introduced a bill to fund cancer research that eventually led to scientists finding a cure?

The 1991 bill Gore introduced was credited for funding the creation of Mosaic and funding the creation of high-speed connections of existing (huge) networks. Both of these things would have happened without the bill. He’s definitely an influential geek and his importance shouldn’t be downplayed, but he didn’t create the Internet.
