After 50 Days, Lulzsec Sails Into the Sunset

Fifty days since the hacker group Lulzsec burst onto the scene by hacking the X-Factor website, the notorious group has announced that the so-called “Lulz boat” will cease to be. The announcement was posted on Pastebin and through their Twitter account, in keeping with the group’s habits. In addition to their press statement, the group also delivered their final data dump.

Their final message was more reflective and somber than previous announcements made by the group. In it they recount their exploits, encourage those that have supported them during the past 50 days to continue AntiSec activities, and even mention that the core group consists of six people. While many have speculated about the group’s goals and motivations, their final statement suggests that they did it for more than just “the lulz.” They write, “we truly believe in the AntiSec movement. We believe in it so strongly that we brought it back, much to the dismay of those looking for more anarchic lulz.”

In what may be its final message, Lulzsec pointed their fans toward the hacker group Anonymous in a tweet. While this could be the end of Lulzsec, it’s clear that they intend their movement to continue.

Read on for the full text of the statement.

Friends around the globe,

We are Lulz Security, and this is our final release, as today marks something meaningful to us. 50 days ago, we set sail with our humble ship on an uneasy and brutal ocean: the Internet. The hate machine, the love machine, the machine powered by many machines. We are all part of it, helping it grow, and helping it grow on us.

For the past 50 days we’ve been disrupting and exposing corporations, governments, often the general population itself, and quite possibly everything in between, just because we could. All to selflessly entertain others – vanity, fame, recognition, all of these things are shadowed by our desire for that which we all love. The raw, uninterrupted, chaotic thrill of entertainment and anarchy. It’s what we all crave, even the seemingly lifeless politicians and emotionless, middle-aged self-titled failures. You are not failures. You have not blown away. You can get what you want and you are worth having it, believe in yourself.

While we are responsible for everything that The Lulz Boat is, we are not tied to this identity permanently. Behind this jolly visage of rainbows and top hats, we are people. People with a preference for music, a preference for food; we have varying taste in clothes and television, we are just like you. Even Hitler and Osama Bin Laden had these unique variations and style, and isn’t that interesting to know? The mediocre painter turned supervillain liked cats more than we did.

Again, behind the mask, behind the insanity and mayhem, we truly believe in the AntiSec movement. We believe in it so strongly that we brought it back, much to the dismay of those looking for more anarchic lulz. We hope, wish, even beg, that the movement manifests itself into a revolution that can continue on without us. The support we’ve gathered for it in such a short space of time is truly overwhelming, and not to mention humbling. Please don’t stop. Together, united, we can stomp down our common oppressors and imbue ourselves with the power and freedom we deserve.

So with those last thoughts, it’s time to say bon voyage. Our planned 50 day cruise has expired, and we must now sail into the distance, leaving behind – we hope – inspiration, fear, denial, happiness, approval, disapproval, mockery, embarrassment, thoughtfulness, jealousy, hate, even love. If anything, we hope we had a microscopic impact on someone, somewhere. Anywhere.

Thank you for sailing with us. The breeze is fresh and the sun is setting, so now we head for the horizon.

Let it flow…

Lulz Security – our crew of six wishes you a happy 2011, and a shout-out to all of our battlefleet members and supporters across the globe

It’s pretty obvious that the feds are getting close to them, and they are scared.

  • Sash

The reason they quit is they probably realized the CIA-FBI-NATO-and
every other heavy on the planet is going to hunt them down for the rest
of their lives. Makes sense don’t it?

by exposing security flaws in major corporate and government websites, they made internet security the 21st century issue it deserves to be. even though some people got burned in the short term, i think we will thank them in the long run – military-grade hacking is on the rise, and lulzsec showed us that we should be hiring more white-hat hackers!

Nothing like a bigot to make fun of others.

wait a sec…..did they just put themselves in the same sentence as hitler and OBL? did these little cowardly pimple faced children attempt to classify themselves in the same light as historical mass murderers? WOW! narcissism from the security of a computer screen. Can’t wait till the federalis  catch them and put em in prison.

Don’t even for a second condone what they did to be right you fucking peon. i’m sure if they just contacted the places they infiltrated, it would not be bad at all. but they broke the law with what they have stated on numerous occasions as intent with malice. they did it with a sadist’s pleasure to see others in pain. and that is where they broke the law. Sony sues a hacker who destroys their property, and they retaliated with vengence instead of letting the courts decide which is the civil thing to do.

So what makes you so perfect Joe, to call someone a “fucking peon?” Lets see, if we are going with name calling then I think I will call you a retarded corporate shill. I like your optimism in “due process” and court systems, its pretty adorable. But the only way a company like Sony will go down for something is when they either didn’t pay the lawyers and judges enough or there is a corporate hit put on them by a larger competitor(with deeper pockets). Lulzsec did some pretty dumb stuff and over-exposed themselves but I’m pretty sure they got a lot of companies think twice about their actions. And I hope the corruption continues to be exposed so that the uninformed population can see for itself.
And if you think the standard media is informing your properly about the world then read this:

Yeah that makes sense. Just like murdering someone to prove that they’re not cautious enough.

yeah that’s really bad logic. even assuming you are right, that they are exposing stuff so that its fixed, the proper action would be to leave a token saying “we hacked you, here’s how” in secure locations in their systems to show you got there. Instead they caused damage, stole data, and general problems. all for the sake of their own entertainment.

I don’t feel like a simple notification that these corporations were doing something wrong would have made the desired impact. Whether or not they were just doing it for fun, the fact that the public is scared for their own security (with good reason) forces companies to work harder to protect their data.

more like hitting someone to teach them self defence.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_Z4CJFSWSF6NJQ2QO56FEBHKHJM K

Of course, you only need self-defense if there are jack-asses going around hitting people for no reason (other than lulz)

but isn’t that chicken or the egg logic?
there are hackers, and government hackers out there, if someone can find weak spots in darpa before a chinese hacker can, good. I’m not sure.
