NYU Partners With NY Times for Hyperlocal East Village Blog


Earlier this month, Gothamist founder Jake Dobkin went nuclear on the New York Times for its lack of innovation and abominable failure in the Metro space, calling Cityroom “a fairly lazy and sleep-inducing ripoff of Gothamist.”

How ironic, then, that just yesterday, the Times announced that it has partnered with NYU’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute to create The Local: East Village, a hyperlocal blog that will be produced by NYU and published on the Times’ site. It’s like they could tell the future!

DirectTV Finally Waives Early Termination Fee For Paralyzed WWII Vet

Corporate America will stop at nothing to suck you dry. Even if “you” are an 87-year-old WWII vet disabled by a recent stroke.According to the Houston Press, Robert Leeder (the vet) had a stroke that paralyzed half his body and moved into a nursing home, subsisting solely off his Veterans Affairs Benefits, Social Security and a “small pension.” When his family called to cancel his satellite, DirectTV slapped them with a $400 early termination fee. National Enquirer Officially Eligible For Pulitzer

According to the HuffPo, the The National Enquirer officially has permission to compete for the Pulitzer Prize. And according to us, Barry Levine officially has the right to scream “Suck it, Sulzberger!”

The National Enquirer entered the “Investigative Reporting” and “National News Reporting” categories for its coverage of the John Edwards baby-daddy scandal, an exclusive scoop they broke nearly a year before other publications even mentioned it. Once the public finally caught on, it effectively destroyed Edwards’ political career; last time I checked, this is a prime example of investigative journalism.

TechCrunch Intern Fired For Requesting Macbook Air For Blog Post

This week, TechCrunch suspended Daniel Brusilovsky, an intern in the throes of his Senior year of high school, for requesting a Macbook Air in exchange for writing a post about a start-up. When a further investigation revealed that Brusilovsky had received under-the-table compensation — including another computer — for previous posts, they fired him.
