Nickelodeon Announces New Season of Avatar: The Legend of Korra

Rumors about a fabled fourth season of Avatar: The Last Airbender have gained traction and number with the release of M. Night Shyamalan‘s movie, with willful disregard for the actual cinematic worth of the film.  Nickelodeon confirmed them all today, with a press statement announcing the production of Avatar: The Legend of Korra, which will pick up the Avatar plot seventy years later, with the Avatar who comes after Aang, a Southern Water Tribe girl (Korra) who has already mastered Water, Earth and Fire.

Her quest leads her to the epicenter of the modern “Avatar” world, Republic City – a metropolis that is fueled by steampunk technology. It is a virtual melting pot where benders and non-benders from all nations live and thrive. However, Korra discovers that Republic City is plagued by crime as well as a growing anti-bending revolution that threatens to rip it apart. Under the tutelage of Aang’s son, Tenzin, Korra begins her airbending training while dealing with the dangers at large.

*ahem*

So…

  • Steampunk, the inevitable setting that was hinted at with Fire Nation ships and can only have accelerated once firebenders and waterbenders actually started working together.
  • 70 years later, long enough that all of our favorite characters from the show are probably still around (especially considering the lifespans of some of the show’s characters) to feel weird about teaching the reincarnated form of their good friend, but are old enough to parallel the strong, wise, bad ass old people in the new show.  Grand-ma Toph, anyone?  All I’m saying is: get Margaret Cho to do her voice.
  • Air training offers an excellent segue to finding the Air Nation.

Details on Korra‘s production schedule and release are expected to be announced this week, at San Diego Comic Con.  We wait in humble anticipation.

    Actually Aang could very well be the Last Airbender at the present time.However, in the last episode Aang removes Ozai’s ability to bend fire, the implication is that he could make someone a bender using the same method. A good group to do that to would be the people who took refuge in the Northern Air Temple.

    hmmmm….not certain how I feel about this….the storyline sounds amazing, though when I first heard there was going to be more “Avatar”, I was thinking more along the lines of expanding upon the series and although it sounds like that is what Avatar: The Legend of Korra is doing in some ways, I’m still not certain if it will be up to my expectations. Plus my favorite character and whole reason of existence was Zuko, so as I’m figuring this show will not be having Zuko as a major, or even minor, or even existing, character on the show, I’m not sure if I can watch it with the same adoration and admiration that I felt when watching Avatar: The Last Airbender.

    Once I heard that they were making a new avatar series I got excited and looked it up. I found out that it is supposed to be set 70 years in the future and that katara and aangs son, an airbender is in his 50s and is teaching the young new avatar airbending. I also read that the series is going to use many flashbacks to the original seasons. It did not say whether the main characters from the original series were alive or not, but it said there was a high chance of it because of the long lifelines the characters ancestors had. Zuko especially because his grandfather llived to be 98 and his great grandfather live to be 102. When the show begins zuko will only be 86 so there is a high chance he will still be alive. One disapointment is that aang will be dead obviously because korra would not exist if Aang was still alive. I am looking forward to the debute of the mini series.

    i always thought that they would continue the story with the original cast, this is mainly because they start to bring up things about zuko’s mum and when they decided not to kill fire lord ozai i thought they were just leaving themselves with room to create a 4th season were they would search for zuko’s mum.

    I am excited about this series. The movie was such a let down and I hear that the creaters of the cartoon series were not involved with the movie much at all. So lets get back to the Avatar animated series and enjoy it all over again. I thought the cycle of the Avatar was Air, Water, Earth, and Fire. With Korra being a Water Bender shouldn’t she be mastering Earth Bending first then Fire and then Air. Why is she mastering Airbending first?

    This is a dissapointment and an exitment. I extremely wish they would continue aangs story but Im exited cause at leats they are making a new season. Its better then none at all but continuing aangs story would be way more enjoyable. Its suppose to come out late fall of 2011 but no dates are for sure yet

    I think we will see SOME of the older characters, take King Bumi for example he was 112 durring the original series. Why not the others since they wernt over 16 for the gang. I cant wait!!!! ^.~

    A lot of you want to just continue Avatar: the Last Airbender, but there’s really not much to continue. Like when books have a happy ending, the author isn’t going to go on into the lives of the people who already solved their problems. People want action, and you can always imagine what happens after everything works out. Not much to imagine, though.
    We can only move on to the next peril, the next legend..

    no no no no no, it will not be as good as the orignal avatar, there is no characters from the orginal that will be in this one, not one, because for a new avatar to be born the old one has to die, so no Aang, no Katarra, no Sokka, no Momo, no anybody, it wouldn’t be the same without all of them, even Zuko, whom I really like as a charcter. I want it to be good but i don’t think it will.

    bcuz aang cant live while korra is alive its true that aang is dead…but isnt there still a possibility that the other characters are still alive? just because aang dies doesnt mean all the characters r gone…but i do believe that they will come up maybe for like a special episode or sumthing

    Someone needs to write more stories of Avatar Aang, Katara, Prince Zukko, etc. I love watching all the chapters. Hopefully its never ending like Dragon Balls. There is nothing wrong in continuing the original cast.

    I am excited about the new series but i think they should continue the orginal. There are many things that they could do. They could have like an episode where “cunbustion man ” returns, one where toph gets a boyfriend, one where zuko finds his mother, etc. There are so many possiblities. I hope that mabye after they finish avatar: lengend of korra that they continue avatar the last airbender. and i hope that in the new series everyone is still in the seires just as old people lol. and im not too happy about aang being dead. its kinda like really sad.

    if you saw the shows, roku was the past avatar, and he helped aang through the spirit world. so aang should help korra too because he was the past avatar now. but he wont come out as often as he did in his show, sorry, i’m sad too:(

    im soo upsett that this is am ini seriess it really makes me upset..i was seirously hoping for something else…well i like the idea about korra..but 26 episodes? really? i mean if theres a new avatar coming out why has she alerady mastered 3 elements…they can do a lot more with the air nation to..and have like a new colony of them…like have them hiding somewhere thats not on the map..and that could be where some airbenders were..it shouldnt just be her trying to master air and avoiding other people….AND THEY SHOULD HAVE A SEASON FOR I COMPLETELY AGREE….this is so lame..if they are gonna make a new series..why cant it be longg….and these 26 episodes better be like an hour long or something because im not putting up with 30 mins..26 episodes is not evne like a whole season are u kididng me..all she has to do is master air…this is so upsetting..i love the idea..but it shouldnt be a mini series

    Why are you all whining about a new series?! we had 3 season of the last airbender, and there’ no more to continue, it’s finished, do you really want the same old thing you saw?
    Think about it, in video games, would you want the sequal to be the exact same thing??
    It’s stupid to make an entire season about what happened after the ending, there will be no action, no stuff new, just watching them talk.. truth is, they can make Zuku finding his mother in about 1-2 episodes, maybe bonus episodes.
    also, another complaint I saw is that you won’t see an entire season of Korra learning just Air,
    but, who said it will continue the same formula of the last airbender? maybe learning elements here is just a side-story, and by the time the new season ended, you’ll forget all about the LEARNING of elements. (I’m not saying this is a good thing, but they surely will make up for it with good stuff and story line, and by making only 1 element left to learn it’s bound to happened.)
    Truth is, Legend Of Korra will be full of new twists, story, WORLD, and so much more, I know that it’s sad that Aang died and you’ll probably won’t see Sokka and Katara and Zuku and pretty much the good ol’ gang so much, but, it’s not like you loved them and knew them since the first episode of the last airbender, and you’ll learn to love all the new characters of the Legend Of Korra too.
    I’m really excited about this, I thought that every scene of the last airbender was a masterpiece (really incredible drawing), and judging by that picture in the article, it’s going to be an amazing series.

    TL;DR – Don’t be so afraid of change, and keep in mind, in the same saga franchise, it will be awesome.

    to learn about Zukos mom? Ok that can easily be resolved by some flashbacks in the new series!! They can still answer some questions y’know!! (and you cant say its stupid and it hasnt even came out yet! Therefore, you’re stupid)

    And yes i will miss the old characters! I liked them all! But its time to move on… I am extremely excited for this new season and not dissapointed at all, after the horrible movie i didnt think i’d ever hear about avatar again anyway, so to hear about this is a pleasant surprised and you should all be grateful!!

    Personally they shouldnt go 70 years into the future. They should only go a few years ahead. Only like 5 or 6 years ahead so we can see all the caracters in there prime and still get to have a few more good missions with aang before he dies, and get to see aang and katara getting married and sakka and sukie getting married or see how there love lives play out and see what happened to zukos mom and get to see how everything plays out. After a few years of peace something would be bound to happen because everything cant be perfect for ever. and something bad can happen and they can build from that. Or something instead of going 70 years into the future.

    not exactly…    70 years later….  so 70 minus 16 (korra’s age) is 54…. and add that to 12 (aangs age) so….. 66…. still younger than i would have expected… but still not too bad.

    I’m sooooooooooooo excited!!! I grew up with Avatar: The Last Air Bender on nickelodeon and now in my adulthood it’ll be SUPER awesome to see the storyline continue! In fact, I literally just finished re watching all of seasons 1-3. So I hope that this is released sometime within the next year. :D SQUEE!

     I mean, I would rather have a new avatar then no avatar story at all… I read that previous comments complaining about how they wished the writers continued the the original story. I do to, and maybe if the fan base is still good they may do some short series on that. But like many great stories, they must come to an end….

    No, cuz the new avatar is born once the previous one dies-remember the episode where Avatar Roku explains how he died (the one where Zuko is looking at memoirs from Sozan) and then once he dies Aang is born. So Aang died at 82.

    Havent all you guys thought of epilogues?!?!?!?! Its perfect because it doesnt continue too much into a new season but it should just wrap up all the cliff hangers. I mean yeah im mad too that they ended avatar the last airbender and im not so sure if im going to like last airbender the legend of korra but i still dont understand why the authours just didnt make a simple epilogue……Even i wouldnt like a book 4 of the avatar series there would be no action and no plot no nothing….just boring episodes about how they finally saved the world

    I don’t think you can give energy — When he was about to lose to Ozai, I don’t think he would’ve gained firebending if he didn’t already have it… still, there may be some other way.  Also, remember that Aang’s son will be teaching Korra, so he is most likely an airbender.

    Well, but There is still a place for fantasy… Imagine if Korra met the old Zuko and he told her a story about his mother and Iroh… these secrets can be still revealed… Although Im sad that Aang wont be there anymore:( I was kinda shocked when I first read about the storyline of the new season… All of them died:(

    No it wouldnt be interesting… Just look – every adventure movie has a continuation like this – the enemy is coming back, you have to have more power to defeat him etc. But Legend of Korra is so unusual, so Im sure it will be great. :)

    he was 13 when the series ended. korra’s story is set 75 years later and korra is 17. add up the math and that would mean he was 71 when he died.

    I am so excited… although I agree with the comments below, I will miss the old characters… and although I do sill have a few questions like what happend to Sukos mom and azula and what happenes with kitara and angs relationshop (considering I was waiting a whole series for that last scene!)… but they are right, a conflict would be difficult to establish. Hopefully they will touch on some of those stories in the new season…

    it doesnt matter what they say im fucking pissed u wanna know y? at the ending of the final episode zuko speaks to his father and asks him wheres his mother, they could’ve taken off from that point. i like the idea of steampunk but i mean really? it doesnt fit the avatar theme. a mini series about the young to old masters of elements (white lotus people) would’ve been great i mean who wouldnt wanna hear about the crazy old king boomeys story or the joyful tea loving irouh. or hell they couldve told the story of previous avatars. the point is i love avatar and i will miss the old characters but if they wanna do something like this its stupid things like this is better left to fullmetal alchemist.

    They were leaving it open for a new series, but Nick headquarters said no, because it would be a dead plot, but there were so many fans of Avatar: The Last Air Bender that wanted a 4th season, that they have desided to create a new season, with a brand new story line

    Yes, but the series starts *70 years after Aang is 12* and at the start of the series Korra is *17*. Meaning Aang died at 65 or she wouldn’t have been born.

    To be honest, I’m mad they’re not making a 4th season. I want to know what happened to Zuko’s mom. I want to know how they rebuilt the world after the invasion. How Aang and Katara got together, and all that good stuff. This new series will probably explain all that, but I wanted it in full detail not just a flashback or a story here and there.

    Acccording to many many many sources there are going to be more episodes hich made me very happy. On the latest season finally moko and korra said i love you how are they going to carry that out in the next seasons? And to the writers big clap aang giving her powers back and her being able to restore power GENIUS BRAVO BRAVO!!!!!

    I honestly just found this series recently, and I absolutly loved Avatar: the Last Airbender series. From what I’ve seen from what Legend of Korra has to offer, it’s not the best, but I guess it can grow on you. I like the fact that in season 2 of the Legend of Korra she’ll be in the Spirit world and there is a great possiblity to see Aang and everyone again. I loved the old fashion version of Aang’s series better, and I would have loved a season 4 as well, but they have made comics called The Promise (which helps connect how Aang created Republic City) and The Search is about to come out (which will cover the mystery of Zuko’s mom). So since season 4 isn’t meant to be, I guess the comics will have to do. In the mean time, I guess just be satisfied with the flashbacks in the Legend of Korra to find out more of the secrets we have all been waiting to find out about.
