A Student-Made Robot Threw the First Pitch at a Baseball Game Last Week

Okay, that’s it. Ladies, gentlemen, and variations thereof, we need to have a serious discussion about the “first pitch” of a baseball game, because it has been getting exponentially more ridiculous lately. First dinosaurs, then cats, and now robots? I fear that it’s only a matter of time before Michael Jackson’s hologram gets asked to throw the old… um. Whatever you colloquially call baseballs. Leather pumpkin? I don’t know.

At least it’s a super cool robot invented by student members of the S.T.E.M. program at a local high school in Phoenix, Arizona. If you’re going to be straight up wacky about who—or what—you’re going to get to throw the first pitch, the least you can do is select something that promotes science and education in a cool way. “Bruce” might be a cold, unfeeling robot who seeks to overthrow us, but at least the kids are learning something cool.

Still, you watch yourself, Bruce. Major League Baseball’s been cracking down on performance enhancement, and I think having mechanical arms that are incapable of feeling fatigue probably count.
