Where Do Beards Come From? [Beardographic]

This one is for all you men out there. Have you ever wanted to know more about beards? Of course you have; beards are awesome. While I might not be the best person to be asking, having facial hair better fit for a 15-year-old, I can point you to a genuinely fascinating beardographic from Online PhD that delves into the science, history, and behavioral cause and effect of beard-acquisition and beard-ownership. The downside is that, as you might expect, beards can be kind of a turn-off for the ladies. The upside? They are beards. Beards are awesome.

(via Online PhD, thanks Greg!)

Related to awesomeness by virtue of being related to beards

From myself, and my facial hair, thank you.

The question is not where beards come from, but where they go. With the exception (possibly) of aboriginal Americans, having a beard is  the natural state of  affairs. Cutting it off is unnatural. If women don’t like it, tough. Beards are the result of natural selection, presumably by women who preferred bearded proto-hominids to hairless ones.

As a person who likes beards, I found this interesting and cute. As a lady who has spent most of her life shaving her own parts for the pleasure  of men and societal aesthetics alone when single, I find the idea that women are somehow deficient themselves (“fewer and fewer women can handle them,” etc.) if they have a preference for a smooth face incredibly dumb.

Alas, I cannot grow a decent beard. Plus, I can’t stand how itchy they are. Also, I don’t like looking like a hobo.

    Awesome post.

People who take care of their beads do not look like hobos.  Taking care of a beard is far more work than most people are willing to out in, but they still grow them.

So women should let their legs, armpits and muff grow…?

  • SF

Yes. The looking like a 12 year old thing has gotten out of control.

  • Grizzled Geezer

Women have shaved their armpits for only the last century or so. No one knows where the practice started, but one theory is that Mack Sennett’s “Bathing Beauties” films were the cause. Sennett supposedly did not like the hair under their arms when they waved, so he had them shave it off.

To shave off one’s beard is to deny one’s masculinity. There are only a few good reasons to do it: patchiness; persistent ingrown hairs; itchiness that won’t go away. (These are uncommon.) I can’t think of any others.

    AND…that’s a wrap!

Couldn’t have said it better myself

  • Ace

Well, in my opinion, yes.  I find people of either sex shaving weird.

On a side note, I am going to start swearing by my beard, like Otto the Great.

    Does that bother you?

  • PAC

    muff anyway

  • Davantage

What next? Don’t clip your nails and don’t use mouthwash.

I think facial hair is a choice, my girlfriend personally hates my beard, mainly because she says it hurts to kiss me, but she does admit that it makes me have a stronger jawline and a more rugged appearance. pros and cons my friends.

  • Grizzled Geezer

I had a friend with a beautiful Scots beard. His girlfriend loved laying her head in it. If your girlfriend finds your beard “painful”, that’s her problem. Don’t let it become yours.

Two bearded guys kissing is one of the great pleasures in life, a pleasure only bearded women will ever experience.

  • Devilgirl

You may want to have a barber trim the hair around your mouth and see if that makes it better for your girlfriend. My top lip used to get scraped raw by my husband’s moustache until he learned how to trim it properly.
