The Ten Greatest Alignment Charts of All Time

As people paid to read the Internet all day, (hard work! No, actually.) we can tell you definitively that Alignment Charts seem to be blowing up all over the place lately. Today alone we’ve seen The Big Lebowski, Alice in Wonderland, and Dr. Who take the Web by (missile) storm.

Here’s the thing: they’re not really a new meme. For those not familiar with them, alignment charts draw from classic Dungeons & Dragons, breaking characters down by two axes: Law-Chaos (lawful, neutral and chaotic) and Good-Evil (good, evil, and neutral). An alignment chart in meme terms, then, is a 3×3 grid comprised of nine characters from a given movie, game, or other pop culture happening.

In no particular order, here are ten of our favorite all-time alignment charts: (some language NSFW):

1. The Big Lebowski Alignment Chart (via Reddit):

2. Nintendo Alignment Chart (via Nakabeast’s DeviantART):

3. The Office Alignment Chart (via Reddit):

4. Team Fortress 2 Alignment Chart (via Rock Paper Shotgun):

5. U.S. President Alignment Chart (via Know Your Meme):

6. (Classic) Alice in Wonderland Alignment Chart (via Reddit):

7. Computer Geek Alignment Chart (via Soup.io):

8. Warhammer 40K Alignment Chart (via Sputnik127′s DeviantART):

9. Dr. Who Alignment Chart (via Metafilter):

And the geekiest of all, in our opinion:

10. Roleplaying Game Alignment Chart (via Know Your Meme)

Was expecting a Batman alignment chart. Wuhappen?

  • Vrey_oneida

It’s “composed of”, not “comprised of.” ‘Comprise’ uses the same syntax as ‘contain’.

ya know it’d really help if you click on the actual charts to enlarge them also most of these are incorrect

The roleplaying game alignment was the best kind of meta ive ever seen

Are they saying that 4.0 is better than 3.5? Fuck that noise, 4.0 is hot garbage. I would rather abide the world’s worst DM on a 3.5 campaign than any 4.0 campaign… Hell, I’m a version 1 fan, but seriously, 4.0? Suck my nuts.

  • OBJECTION!

Iunno, it’s way harder to bend the rules to one’s favor in 4e than it is in 3.5, I don’t think anyone with any experience in the 2 systems could argue that.

Out of curiosity, why does no one ever mention Rifts as an RPG? I mean, it’s an amazing RPG, and it had a pretty good fanbase, but it seem to have just fallen off the map.

  • QuigleyHasIssues

WTF. Whoever even made these has a terrible opinion of RPG alignments. Walter in TBL is clearly lawful neutral (ie: “Am I the only one around here who gives a shit about the rules?”). The person who made these charts equates chaotic with insane, which is just plain wrong.
Don’t get me started on why 4.0 sucks hard ones.
I’m no republican, but Nixon wasn’t a bad president, either. His foreign policy was second to none, although his domestic policy was lackluster. As for Watergate, he just got caught doing what most politicians do.

saying something like that implies that you are lazy as a potential DM. the fact is, if someone is rule bending but not breaking in my games, i applaud them and try to challenge them more. 3.5 is better, plain and simple. also, it even says in the opening to the books that these are a simple set of guidelines to get you started. if you took it so literally, then its your own fault.

Iv’e got a very simple alignment choice for a famous movie:
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly= The True Neutral, the Lawful Evil, and the Chaotic Neutral.

  • Postmodernist

No. No. Andrew Jackson is not neutral by any merit. You don’t commit one of history’s most successful genocides and get to be neutral, even if chaotic. He was pretty damn chaotic in general, more than even the evil aspect, but again, the man couldn’t breakfast without killing at least three Native Americans.

  • poil

He had his reasons. Yes, he shouldn’t have done the trail of tears, but it did create safer areas and more room for Americans to spread out. Actually everything he did was for America, even though he shouldn’t have. He gave a lot more power for the common citizen. He got rid of the national bank. Stuff like that. He’s not evil, just not good enough to care about anything outside of America. And since he acted almost like a king, using his army to have a lot more power than he should, and ignoring congress, he would be chaotic. So really neutral fits him better. At least from the American side. ‘Sides, the evil spot is held by Nixon who was way worse.

the hardcores I know prefer Pathfinder (a.k.a. “3.7″)

Well, it certainly illustrates that a whole lot of people with a whole lot of time on their hands don’t have the first clue about what “alignment” means nor the various components thereof.

This is false btw: “comprised of” is perfectly valid.

Yeah how the fuck does “Nixon” beat out guys who actually committed mass-murder?? His big crime was spying on the competition. Immoral, sure, but hardly on par with genocide.
