Norwegian Skiier Overjoyed to Find Junk Food During 90 Day Solo Trip to South Pole

As a sterling reminder that it’s the little things in life that matter comes this recent video from Norwegian outdoor sports enthusiast and freelance journalist Aleksander Gamme. For three months through 2011 and 2012, Gamme embarked on a solo cross-country ski trip to the South Pole and back. After 86 days of travel, a few days from the end of his return trip, he came across a cache of supplies he’d left while heading inland. What he’d forgotten was the chocolate and cheese doodles inside.

This Business Card is a Trebuchet [Video]

The modern business card isn’t just about communicating information, but saying something about yourself and nothing says “motivated self starter” like a business card that is also a siege weapon. That’s the idea behind this trebuchet business card from mechanical engineer and business card manufacturer Bryce Bell. Simply fold, add 16 pennies as counterweights, and launch a paper clip some 10 feet. It’s surprisingly functional and remarkably accurate, though you’ll probably have to explain what it is to every single person you give it to.

Dog Involved in Deadly DUI Crash Swims Half Mile to Kayaker, Traumatized, but Survives

Fishing in a kayak half a mile off the coast of Sarasota, Florida a man was greeted with a surprising guest swimming up to his boat, Barney the dog. The fisherman quickly reeled in his fishing line once he saw the dog — something I’m not sure if I would be quick enough to realize to do — and pulled Barney into his kayak. He dried the dog off and headed for shore, and during this time, Barney was perched on the back of kayak, a very small space, too afraid to move, clearly traumatized in some way. Obviously, small dogs don’t regularly end up half a mile out to sea, and it was apparent by that and the way the little guy was acting that he was involved in something unfortunate. It turned out Barney was involved in a deadly DUI crash; he was out for a jog with his owner, and a drunk driver struck and killed her not too long before the dog fled to sea. Fortunately, the story doesn’t end badly for poor Barney.

Stephen Hawking Understands Everything but Women

In an interview with New ScientistStephen Hawking was asked what he thought about most during the day. In a classic, age-old form, he replied, “Women. They are a complete mystery to me.” Possibly even more amusing, he wasn’t making the fairly standard joke — he was serious. A man who literally wrote the book on something as complex as Time doesn’t understand women.

Foo Fighters Concert Caused Geological Tremors Similar to an Earthquake

At a recent concert in New Zealand, the Foo Fighters rocked so hard that it caused geological tremors similar to those of an actual earthquake. New Zealand’s GeoNet blog reports that two seismic stations outside the stadium no more than 2 kilometers away detected a “strong low frequency” of tremors during the time of the concert, with the strength of the tremors corresponding to the highs and lows of the music. Hilariously, the strength of the levels record were consistent with volcanic activity.

That’s right, Foo Fighter fans, your band rocks that hard.

This Helmet Judges Your Ability to Handle Spicy Foods

When eating a ridiculously spicy taco, it’s convenient to have a soothing beverage on hand to ease the burn. But what if that soothing beverage was on your head, and what if it was attached to a suite of sensors that worked together to determine how much you were reacting to the spicy food you just ate? Then you’re probably wearing the Nuclear Taco Sensor Helmet, presented by Lisbon’s altLab at this year’s CodeBits conference.

Of course, after they built the taco sensor hat, the only possible way to present it was by making a fake Japanese game show. See it, after the break.
