Blizzard Steps in After GAME Australia Reneges on Diablo III Preorders

There was much wailing and gnashing of teeth yesterday as Aussies discovered that by virtue of GAME Australia going “into administration” (similar to bankruptcy), customers who preordered Blizzard’s Diablo III would not have their preorders honored or refunded. Thankfully, Blizzard rode up in shining armor to help those fans get the hack-and-slash fix they’ve been waiting for.

This One, is For the Ladies (Who Are Also Moms) [Video]

For Mother’s Day, we’ve got this heartwarming video of people thanking their moms for being the upstanding ladies that they are. Strangely, several of them focus on law-breaking, but a mother’s love knows no bounds. Be sure your mom knows how much you appreciate that. Also, is that popular musician/avant garde comedian Reggie Watts at the beginning? Awesome.

New Tooth Filling Fights Bacteria, Strengthens Your Chompers

Getting a cavity filled is an unpleasant process by any measure, but what makes it worse is that merely drilling out parts of rotten teeth may not be enough to prevent future cavities. Thankfully, a team of scientists has developed an anti-bacterial fill to fight future cavities and strengthen teeth in the process. You’ll still have to brush though. And floss — my god, why don’t you floss??

White House Reaffirms Opposition To CISPA, Standing Veto Threat

A few weeks ago, we had some good news on the CISPA front when the Obama administration first voiced vague opposition to current cybersecurity legislation, and then made an explicit veto threat against CISPA as it stood. Since then, however, CISPA has not only passed the House, but has also been amended. Fortunately, the White House is not quite satisfied with these amendments and has reiterated its concerns about CISPA and the possibility of a veto, even in this modified form.

Judge Rules IP Addresses Are Insufficient Evidence To Identify Pirates

Mass lawsuits have been one of the most effective weapons rightsholders have had against torrenters. By using IP addresses to identify infringers, rightsholders have not only been able to find a large supply of alleged infringers to take action against, but are also to attach names — and wallets — to instances of infringement. The problem is that these cases tend to operate with the pinpoint accuracy of a flamethrower, which is why New York Judge Gary Brown has ruled IP addresses are insufficient evidence to identify pirates, and has provided a lengthy and thoughtful explanation as to why that is.

Facebook Encouraging Organ Donation With New Timeline Events

Facebook is notorious for being a time-waster, but could it be a life-saver? An announcement this morning suggests that it’s going to try. Making good use of its built-in audience of millions, Facebook has incoporated a new flavor of Life Event” for users to put on their timelines: Becoming an organ donor. By making it easy for Facebook users to both advertise the fact that they are donors — or become donors if they aren’t already — Facebook has already increased the total number of organ donors, and could effectively put an end to organ shortages.

Multiplayer for God of War: Ascension Revealed

Not too long ago, Sony unveiled the next main (read: Not portable installment) God of War, God of War: Ascension. Each main God of War has had some incredible event happen in the game, be it technical, game play, or story related. God of War‘s feat was a PS2 game that looked as good as it did, but somehow featured virtually no load times. God of War II featured the surprising cliffhanger ending, and God of War III featured the Titan fights and the camera from the point of view of the victim you’re currently brutally murdering. Though we know God of War: Ascension will feature Kratos’ past, before the the series takes place, it seems the big feat of this game will be multiplayer. That’s right, God of War will have a fully fledged multiplayer component, and from what little we know, it doesn’t look too shabby.

Obama Administration Issues Formal Threat To Veto CISPA As-Is

Not too long ago, the Obama administration offered a weak, but still welcome criticism of everyone’s favorite cybersecurity bill CISPA. While the announcement then neither mentioned CISPA by name nor bring up the word “veto,” there’s been a follow-up announcement that does both. Yes, the Obama administration has issued a formal veto threat against CISPA, as is. In the coming days before the vote, CISPA does face some amendments, and I’d also like to remind you that a veto threat is worth as much as the paper it’s printed on. In this case it’s an email, but it’s still better than an endorsement, right?

Researchers Propose Enormous Aluminum Sails for Greener Shipping

Normally when we bring you a story from DigInfo, it’s a crazy Japanese project to bring you something no sane person would want. This research project to place enormous retractable metal sails on large merchant ships, however, is actually quite a good idea. The supporters of the project say that a hybrid ship, using both wind and conventional engine power, could reduce fuel consumption by 25%.
