Display-Free Camera Lends Digital Photography Some Analog Trappings

Back in the day, there used to be some guesswork in photography. Those of you old enough to remember film will also remember the anticipation of waiting for your photos to be developed and the crushing disppointment of finding out they somehow all managed to be horrendously out of focus. Brian Matanda is trying to bring some of that joy fear excitement and uncertainty to digital photography with an interesting analog-inspired digital design called the Timeless Capture camera. Picture takin’ used to be different, kids.

A Plethora of Assassin’s Creed Concept Art Created 3 Years Before the Game’s Release

Ubisoft has a cache of Assassin’s Creed concept art, giving us fans of hidden blades and parkour assassination an eye-pleasing treat. Though the original game was released back in 2007, the concept art comes from 2004 and shows off more of a Prince of Persia style, a female assassin, and much more. Interestingly, the concept art was created so long before the game idea was cemented that the team thought they were creating a Prince of Persia spin-off. Each piece of concept art was drawn by Khai Nguyen, who seemed to have a pretty good idea what the game should look like, considering the final build turned out fairly similar to the 2004 concept art. Check out the rest of the pretty art below the break.

Lost Star Trek TOS Script Won’t Be Filmed After All

A few months back, the Internet was a buzz with news that a lost Star Trek: The Original Series script had resurfaced after nearly five decades. The plan then was for the fan group Star Trek The New Voyages: Phase II to film it with the original writer, Norman Spinrad, at the helm to direct. Sadly, it seems those dreams will remain unrealized as CBS has blocked the fan production.

AIM Good As Dead After Massive AOL Layoffs Eliminate Development Team [UPDATED]

It should come as little surprise, but AIM is now dead. Effectively, anyway. And yes, up until recently, it was technically alive. Last Friday, AOL finalized layoffs which included the vast majority of the Instant Messenger division. The department was “eviscerated,” a former employee told The New York Times, and is now down to nothing more than support staff, so there’s practically no chance at future development. All in all, you’d have to have been pretty deluded to be stunned by this, but it’s still a little sad for those of us who practically grew up on the service.

Own a 1984 Steve Jobs Lithograph by Norman Seeff

Photographer Norman Seeff recounts the session wherein he took some now-famous photographs of Steve Jobs, calling the evocative shot an “electromagnetic rendition of what was going on,” citing Steve Jobs having a “slight Mona Lisa quality to that knowing smile” because he is envisioning “how what he has on his lap is going to impact the future.” You can now own a lithograph of the iconic image of Steve Jobs having what Seeff feels was a Mona Lisa moment, available for purchase almost 30 years after it was taken.

We’re seriously living in the future. Designer Anton Repponen shows us what 1986 would’ve looked like if Apple focused all of their technical prowess on developing the iPhone, but didn’t save any resources to further software aesthetics. Unfortunately, this doesn’t seem to be a theme for jailbroken iPhones and iPod Touches. More pictures after the break.

Outhouse Time Machine

Outhouse Time Machine. No, I’m not talking about the sequel to Hot Tub Time Machine, even though that could very well be its title. I’m talking about a project Oklahoma City-based crazy man Sam Seide has been working on for a while now. His credentials? He is a self-proclaimed “AVID halloween builder,” capitalization his. Of course, this thing isn’t actually a time machine and it isn’t actually an outhouse. But a simulated outhouse simulating a time machine is still worth talking about, right? Yo dawg, I herd you like simulations…

When riders get in the outhouse they pull down their pants better hold onto their pants, because there’s a lot in store. The seat (heh) vibrates to simulate time-turbulence, there are all kinds of lighting effects, a control panel that displays the status of the machine (how much you wanna bet things go very wrong) and last but not least, 3 LCD monitors that act as the machine’s windows. It’s an impressive feat, and it will doubtlessly be awesome. For the first time, I wish I lived in Oklahoma City considering it’s open to trick-or-treaters. One more thing. It’s intended to seat two, but I’d make sure to go with someone you like; that thing ain’t any bigger on the inside.
