First Ever All-White Adult Male Orca Spotted Off Russian Coast

A team of Russian researchers have announced that they have spotted the first known adult male all-white killer whale off the Kamchatka Peninsula, near the Commander Islands. Named “Iceberg” by the researchers that made the discovery, the whale is one of a few all-white whales in the area, but the only known male to have reached maturity.

Man Builds Secret Egg-House on Government Land, Future is Uncertain, Certainly Awesome

It’s a classic story: Boy becomes successful software engineer, boy retires. But this story about Joel Allen goes on, because instead of reclining into his early golden years, he ran out of cash and decided to take up carpentry. One thing led to another, and Allen built an egg-shaped house on Canadian government land near Whistler, British Columbia. Now, after keeping it secret for so long, he’s trying to figure out how to save the place he calls the Hemloft.

Ratatouille, the Snowboarding Opossum [Video]

Generally, the majestic opossum is considered something of a dangerous pest. This appears to not be the case at the Liberty Mountain ski resort, where they simply took one of the snaggle-toothed marsupials and stuck him on a snowboard. The result is, predictably, adorable.

The Longest Running Experiment in the World has a Webcam, is Glacially Slow

In 1927, a University of Queensland professor named Thomas Parnell wanted to demonstrate the fluidity of extremely viscous substances. To that end, he melted pitch — which is a form of tar — and poured it into a closed funnel, letting it dry for three years. Now, pitch is hard when dry and will even shatter when when struck. However, after the funnel end was cut, the pitch began to drip with agonizing slowness. And 85 years later, it’s still going.

Herpderpedia is a Front Row Seat to the Confusion Surrounding the Wikipedia Blackout

When I first read that the Wikipedia blackout was happening, I wished that I could just pull a up lawn chair on the Wikipedia homepage and spend the day watching the bewildered faces of everyone who had no clue what was going on as they lashed out in anger, fear, and frustration. Now, thanks to @herpderpedia, I can. And so can you.

New Legend of Korra Scenes Have Snuck Out, Elemental Bending Abounds

With no solid release date for the The Last Airbender: Legend of Korra fans have had to make due with speculation, and the occasional still image. The best look we’ve had was the first 80-odd seconds of the first episode, and that was months ago. Now three new scenes, probably from the first episode, have leaked out onto these great wide interwebs, giving us the first look at Korra and her amazing bending abilities. I have to say, these clips seem to suggest a more action-oriented show, but hopefully one just as charming as the original series. The clips don’t seem very spoilery to me, except for a minor note, but watch at your own risk. See the videos, after the break.

First Ever Photos of Rare, Critically Endangered Myanmar snub-nosed monkey

In 2010, the Myanmar snub-nosed monkey was introduced to science and added to the list of primates that live in the Kachin state region of Burma, near China. However, that description came from a dead specimen from a local hunter. No one had seen a live  snub-nosed monkey before, until a joint effort between conservation groups managed to capture the first ever images of this rare monkey.

Report: Apple May Be Trying To Block Sales of Steve Jobs Action Figure [UPDATED]

That Steve Jobs action figure is pretty cool, right? I mean, who wouldn’t want to have one? Apple apparently, and it looks like they don’t want you to have one either. According to the Telegraph, the company making the doll received a little letter from Apple, threatening legal action. The argument, it seems, is that Apple feels like it owns the rights to Steve Jobs. It’s worth noting that the Telegraph’s report of the legal trouble is cautiously worded and no sources are cited, so it might not be the real deal.

Move Fast and Get This Glowing Apple Logo Kit for Your iPhone

When Apple debuted its redesigned PowerBooks way back in the day, it was rumored that Steve Jobs was embarrassed that the Apple logo on the laptop didn’t glow as it was depicted doing in promotional materials. Instead of waiting for Apple to fix this oversight, you can take action by purchasing this handy-dandy glowing Apple logo mod kit!

Achewood Makes Its Triumphant Return

Fans of Chris Onstad’s long-running Achewood webcomic can rejoice as the strip has finally emerged from hiatus, and the bizarre adventures of Ray and his delightful cadre of alcoholic, foul mouthed, anthropomorphic friends can continue. For the first time in nearly a year, new content has been posted at achewood.com, with the promise of more to follow.

Though Onstad’s webcomic Achewood has been running for nearly ten years, it was only recently that it started to turn heads.
