New LEGO Lord of the Rings Minifigs Unveiled

Yes, it seems like those official LEGO Lord of the Rings sets are creeping closer and closer toward a reality. The latest announcement from the popular European construction toy features the Minifig population of Middle-Earth, with everyone’s favorite hobbits, wizards, dwarves, nazgul, elves, orcs, uruk-hai, and humans. Oh, and somebody else, but I just can’t remember his name. Creepy little dude, grey skin, you know the guy (gollum! gollum!). Oh, excuse this (gollum!) horrific wet hacking cough I’ve developed. Anyway, I’m sure his name will come back to me eventually.

Give me the preciousssss!

Ferris Bueller Is Mysteriously Back for Superbowl Sunday Ad [Video]

This short clip features Matthew Broderick stepping back into the role of Ferris Bueller. The iconic music at the end of the clip, as well as the line at the beginning sure are promising for Bueller fans. Granted, this clip is a ten second teaser for either a future commercial or just the Superbowl in general, but even if it’s a commercial for another commercial, it’s Ferris Bueller. People will be happy about that.

Facebook’s New “Timeline” Interface Rolls Out to All Users Starting Today, Prepare for the Complaints

Announced last year, Facebook’s new Timeline interface is the largest change to its UI since the introduction of the Wall. For months, it was available only to developers and users who opted-in to the new layout. That changed today when Facebook announced that Timeline would begin rolling out over the next few weeks for all users starting today, and is guaranteed to spawn a myriad of “petitions” demanding its removal and a #timelinesucks tag on Twitter.

Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom Looks Fantastic, Yellow

The trailer for writer-director-auteur Wes Anderson’s forthcoming film Moonrise Kingdom has dropped and it looks pretty fantastic. Set in the late 1960s, the film centers around a puppy love romance between two twelve year-olds that culminates in their running away, and the subsequent man hunt. Add Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Frances McDormand, Jason Schwartzman, Tilda Swinton, Harvey Keitel, and (of course) Bill Murray, and it just gets even better. The 1960s setting and the very young cast are interesting moves for Anderson; he’s used a ’60s aesthetic in a lot of his movies and had very young actors in his movies before, but it will be interesting to see how his directoral abilities and stylized film making will work with the cast. I simply can’t wait for the slow-motion walking scenes and daddy issues. See the trailer, after the break.

Virgin Media is Doubling Customer Broadband Speeds for Free

In an inexplicably awesome and unexpected move, Virgin Media is going to start doubling all its customers’ broadband speed for free, you know, just for kicks. Virgin Media already provides the fastest Internet available in the U.K. at 100 Mbps, but it looks like that speed is going to get even faster, and for free. I cannot stress that enough. The whole process will cost Virgin Media around $168.5 million, but I suppose the positive press might be worth that. They’re also providing new hardware to anyone who’ll need it to make the most of the speed boost. Also free of charge.

New Chrome Beta Will Load Pages Before You Finish Typing

There’s an ancient proverb that states: “You gotta go fast. You gotta go fast. You gotta go faster. Faster. Faster, faster, faster.” The new Google Chrome Beta browser has taken this principle to heart and added functionality that will actually start pre-loading pages before you’ve finished typing their addresses. If you’re not familiar, the Google Chrome Beta browser has all the space age functionality that isn’t yet fit for a standard Chrome release, and is available to anyone who wants to play with it. The question is, are you really comfortable with having Google Chrome reading your mind?

Netflix’s First Original Series Lilyhammer Debuts Next Month

Netflix’s first foray into the realm of original content will kick off this coming February with a new series called Lilyhammer, about a New York gangster trying to make a new start in Lillehammer, Norway. The new show is billed as a fish-out-of-water series, starring former Soprano’s mainstay (and E Street Band guitarist) Steven Van Zandt. The trailer certainly seems intriguing, and after a turbulent year for Netflix, an interesting looking new series could break new ground for the content streaming giant.
