Don’t Try This At Home

What Would Happen If You Put Your Hand In the LHC?

When the Sixty Symbols folks asked experts what would happen if your hand happened to find its way into the Large Hadron Collider beam, they were told “nothing good.” To get a more nuanced answer, they turned to scientists at CERN. Their response was far more graphic, and gives insight into the incredible forces at work within the LHC. Watch the video after the break, and be amazed.

He isn’t a newcomer to eating entire things of things (technical term) within some small amount of time, including things that aren’t exactly edible, such as styrofoam. Enjoy!

Five Charged After Chinese Teenager Sells Kidney for iPhone, iPad

When people say something costs “an arm and a leg,” they usually aren’t serious. After all, doesn’t it make more sense to do business in internal organs? You might say no, but others say yes, like the five people who are now finding themselves in trouble with the law after they assisted a Chinese teenager sold one of his kidneys to raise the money for a new iPhone and an iPad 2.

Watch As This Drunk Guy Sings All of “Bohemian Rhapsody” in the Back of a Cop Car [Video]

We’ve already seen Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody performed a number of times within the confines of motor vehicles. That is why we bring you this video of something that happened a year ago, on a dark Canadian night. On this special night, a young man was driving home while clearly under the influence and was pulled over by a police officer with whom he seemed to have a history. After extolling on the virtues of universal brotherhood and the importance of community, he begins to sing a heartfelt  cover of Queen’s classic song. We’ve set the video to start playing a few minutes in to avoid the stream of NSFW language, but feel free to wind it back and watch.

California Woman Killed in Homemade Cannon Accident

Normally, we’re a site that encourages the DIY mentality, tinkering with everything, and perhaps even harnessing powers mankind cannot fully understand. However, this is more of a cautionary tale from Potrero, California where a woman was tragically killed from an accident involving her husband and a homemade cannon. This is why Mythbusters says, “don’t try this at home.”

Tired of Waiting for the Elevator? Live in One. [Video]

Waiting for elevators can be tedious, and down right depressing when you think of all the cummulative time wasted doing it. Perhaps we should just follow the lead of Rémi Gaillard, and start living in elevators. Looks cozy to me, but the idea of being trapped in an elevator gives me the heebie-jeebies — even if it was an elevator that was also my home.

New Hip Dislocation Treatment Inspired By Captain Morgan

Yes, that Captain Morgan. The pirate representing the rum brand has led doctors to develop a new way to “reduce” (put back in place) a hip dislocation. When a hip is dislocated the head of the femur (aka. thigh bone) comes out of its proper alignment in the acetabelum, which is the socket part of the hip. This is usually treated by a doctor pushing the bone back into the socket, which is a delicate task that should only be attempted by a physician.

Writing in the Annals of Emergency Medicine, several physicians report that there may be a better way to correct hip dislocations. It is the rum brand’s mascot, Captain Morgan, who inspired the new technique. Captain Morgan always appears with one leg up resting on a barrel, in a pose that has become iconic. That pose is actually useful for doctors to reduce a hip by putting force on the joint.

Bee Wearing Competition Is Strange, Yet Impressive

For most of us, the presence of even a single bee in our direct vicinity tends to result in helpless flailing, and perhaps an occasional shriek or two in fear. Most of us, could never even conceive of participating in a bee-wearing contest. But, two brave beekeepers in China purposely tried to attract as many bees as possible to their bodies, wearing them as a bee-body suit the likes of which only Lady GaGa could dream.

For 60 minutes, 42 year old Wang Dalin and 20 year old Lc Kongjiang competed in the bee wearing contest in Shaoyang City, China. The two men wore only shorts, goggles, and nose plugs to protect themselves. Each man had a queen bee that had been removed from its hive and captured in a small cage tied around his neck. After just a few minutes, the scent of the queen started attracting her followers and the bees started to swarm the competitors. The men were standing on a scale, so that the weight added by the bees could be measured.
