Twitter Says It’s Gathering Information About Your Web Browsing, but in a Good Way

Yesterday, Twitter unveiled its system for suggesting accounts for new and current users to follow. These s0-called “tailored suggestions” are designed to cut through the glut of people, companies, and NASA rovers currently on Twitter. In order to provide those tailored results, Twitter has disclosed that it will use information about your browsing habits culled from sites you and others visit. However, it has also said it’s going to comply with the Federal Trade Commission’s Do Not Track initiative. Here’s how it works, and how to turn it off.

46% Americans Think Facebook Is A Fad, Here Are Some Other Things Americans Think

The big news on the net today is that, according to a CNBC poll, a whopping 46% of Americans think Facebook is little more than a passing fad. In addition, the poll revealed that 51% of Americans think Facebook stock would be a good investment (31% don’t), and 50% think the service is overvalued. Despite what those polled might believe, America is home to roughly 200 million Facebook accounts, or nearly two thirds of the population. Enlightening? Well, insofar that it reveals what Americans tend to think, sure. But about the facts of the matter? Probably not so much. It might be wise to consider a few of the other things polls have revealed about American beliefs. Let’s have a look, shall we?

Worldwide Vanilla Shortage Could Hit Consumers at the Ice Cream Stand

While most consumers take the humble vanilla bean for granted, producers of the spice know that things aren’t looking so good. Crop failures have food manufacturers in a buying frenzy, and the rising prices could hit that most precious of summer commodities — ice cream. Analysts are already expecting a 10% price increase for the frozen treat, but it might not be all bad news.

Hot New iPad Literally Runs 13 Degrees Warmer Than iPad 2

Since the launch of the iPad 3 new iPad last Friday, some owners have begun voicing concerns over how warm Apple’s new tablet device seems to run — some saying that their device spits out a warning message and shuts down due to heat. Apple has remained mum, saying that some components in the ultra thin device do get warm during extended use, but have generally downplayed the issue. However, a new report confirms consumer’s feelings: When running full tilt and plugged into a wall socket, the new iPad can reach 116ºF — 13º warmer than its predecessor.

Police are Planning to Raid The Pirate Bay, Says The Pirate Bay

Word on the street is that the Swedish police are preparing for a raid on The Pirate Bay, and the information comes from an interesting source: The Pirate Bay. This wouldn’t be the first time The Pirate Bay has been raided. It happened back in 2006 and it was almost lights out for the site, which was saved by a prudent last minute backup. Now, according to TorrentFreak, The Pirate Bay has come across some evidence that the Swedish police are preparing for round 2, but a lot has changed since 2006.

Internet Giants Reportedly Considering “Nuclear Option” Blackout To Protest SOPA

With the culmination of the SOPA hearings conveniently postponed until sometime in January, the tech world gained a little bit of time to prepare and execute some anti-SOPA demonstrations. Wikipedia had been considering a protest blackout that, as of yet, has not come to fruition and, according to reports by CNET, other Internet giants including Google, Twitter, and Facebook may be considering the “nuclear option” as well. The reports are derived from a quote by Markham Erickson head of the NetCoalition trade association that calls the aforementioned companies members.  ”There have been some serious discussions about that,” Erickson says. “It has never happened before.”

Verizon Sends Out Bogus But Terrifying “Take Shelter” Alert

Yesterday, Verizon Wireless users in New Jersey’s Monmouth, Ocean, and Middlesex counties got a terrifying text message that the coming global superpocalypse was not only coming, but had arrived. The message, completely devoid of context, urged recipents to “Take Shelter Now” and purported to be a direct order from the “U.S. Govern[ment].” Of course, the text left a lot of questions unanswered, like “what’s going on?” and “why is there such a specific end time?” and people naturally started freaking out. Fortunately, the police were able to send out a message explaining that there was not, in fact, a civil emergency.

Airport Scanners May Be Able to Brick Kindles

Several Kindle users have reported that after going through security at an airport, their Kindles have stopped functioning. As you might be able to expect, the culprit is none other than the x-ray scanners in security. “After my Kindle went through the X-ray scanner at Madrid airport, it no longer worked. I had been reading an e-book on the way to the airport so I knew there could be no other reason,” said affected user Michael Hart, from London. Now, many Kindles have made it through security unscathed, so this isn’t a rampant problem, but there is evidence to suggest that the security x-ray’s might be to blame.

Is Project Black Mirror’s Thought-Controlled Siri Hack a Fake?

A few days ago, footage surfaced from a group calling itself Project Black Mirror. It showed three guys, one with electrodes on his head, and an iPhone 4S wired to an Arduino board. In the video, the group claimed that they had created a method by which to control Apple’s voice assistant Siri using their thoughts instead of their voice. The video shows a successful call being placed, much to the group’s satisfaction.

However, some people have begun to question if everything shown in the video is really as it seems.
