It is that time of year again, folks, when couples (or triples!) have a designated holiday where the calendar tells them to show their significant other(s) how much they are appreciated. Whether or not you coupled people do that every day and don’t require a calendar-mandated holiday to remind you why you’re paired off with your significant other in the first place, that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy some of the oddities that spring forth from the Internet during Valentine’s Day, a collection of which we have right here for your viewing pleasure.

NASA’s Hubble captured this shot of the star-forming region, Sharpless 2-106, which happens to look pretty similar to a snow angel. NASA explains that twin lobes of super-hot gas stretch outward from the central star, creating what looks like snow angel wings. Even space is telling you to have a happy holiday season, so do it. You don’t want to let space down, do you?

It is Christmas Day, and you may or may not be plucking presents from under the tree, opening them to find a mix of things you really want and a bunch of socks. Whether or not you celebrate Christmas, you could probably appreciate some of the weird, impressive, unconventional Christmas trees we’ve been saving just for this day. The secular holiday is celebrated on December 23, and consists of time-honored traditions, such as the Airing of Grievances and the Feats of Strength, because who doesn’t want to argue with and physically fight their loved ones to celebrate the holiday season? Pumpkin carving can be pretty simple or, if you feel like it, it can be a complex time-consuming endeavor resulting in an absolutely stunning work of art that is destined to turn into a moldy pile of slime in a few short weeks. If you were wondering if Christmas icons were being randomly formed by blood vessels in your brain, wonder no more. Because it’s entirely possible. In fact, there’s a picture of it. A group of scientists stumbled upon this seeming image of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer while they were studying neurons in the hippocampal region of the brain, which plays a role in long-term memory and spatial navigation.

Researcher Claudia Racca explains:

“We were looking at a section of the tissue and noticed this strange but familiar shape. “It was intriguing and we noticed the similarity to a reindeer.

“We then took an overexposed picture of it and the red blob for the nose and the white antlers showed up even better.

“We got distracted from the science at that point and had a bit of fun with the pictures of Rudolph instead.

Racca puts it best: ”It may not be very valuable scientifically but it looks nice on the eye.”
