New Prometheus Video is a Voicemail from the Future [Video]

The latest video promoting the forthcoming Ridley Scott directed Alien prequel Prometheus has dropped, this time focusing on Noomi Rapace’s character Dr. Elizabeth Shaw. Like the previous video with Michael Fassbender, the video gives us a glimpse of a cold, intrusive future and has an ever-present sense of menace just at the fringes of our perception. It’s not quite as successful as some of the other promotional videos, but it does serve to reinforce that this movie looks pretty great.

Newly Discovered Chameleon is the World’s Smallest, Smaller Than Your Fingernail

When it comes to camouflage, chameleons have the pretty distinct advantage of being able to change colors. Several newly discovered species of chameleons have an extra hiding advantage: They’re tiny. Naturally this makes certain aspects of their life a little tough, but it also makes them almost impossibly cute for a reptile. Discovered in Madagascar, the Brookesia micra are some of the smallest reptiles in the world at a scant 3 centimeters long.

Survey Shows Many Young People Not Upset By Facebook or Email Hacking

Just recently, Kashmir Hill of Forbes dug through the results of a poll MTV and the Associated Press did about social networking and Internet use among young people. The staggering result she found is that around 21% of the 1,335 14-24 year olds reported that their email, Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, or “other” accounts or emails had been accessed and used by someone other than themselves without permission. The more staggering result is that, of those victims, 22% said it didn’t upset them at all, and 37% said it only upset them a little. That’s a total of 59% of victims that wouldn’t say they were even moderately upset.

When asked about whether they thought about the consequences of uploading things to the Internet, mainly that this is no going back, the numbers show that many younger users have barely given this any thought. 41% had given little-to-no thought to the fact that you can never tell where these things will wind up. 44% gave little-to-no thought that stuff might come back to haunt them. 69% gave little-to-no thought that, man, the cops could see this stuff.

How to Make a Transparent Mouse Embryo Using Pee

Have you ever been taking a picture of your mouse embryo collection and gotten frustrated because the darn things just weren’t transparent enough? Like a lot of other bizarrely specific issues, scientists have actually had this one before. In order to solve it, scientists at RIKEN in Japan have published a special “recipe” that will let you transpar-ify all of your mouse embryos in two weeks or less!

They accomplish this effect by soaking the embryos in something called Scale (italics are theirs) for around two weeks, the main ingredients of which are urea (yes, that stuff from urine), Triton-X, which is a kind of flesh-softening detergent, and Glycerol from antifreeze. That’s it. There are already similar products on the market called clearing agents, but this one takes the cake in terms of effectiveness. While others can help you only see so deep, with Scale, the only limitation is the strength of your microscope.
