Improbably Connected Things of the Day

The Doctor Who Theme, Played on Floppy Drives [Video]

For years, I thought I was the only one that sang along to the semi-melodious tones of things like scanners, printers, and floppy drives. The recent glut of floppy drive music proves I was wrong, and this latest video featuring the Doctor Who theme song played by eight drives is a real high-water mark. Maybe its the weird techno-y feel, or the ancient technology resurrected, but it just seems to work.

We’ve shown you dozens of Nyan Cats since the Pop-Tart feline screamed across our collective consciousness leaving a rainbow in its wake. Barnes & Noble Forms New eBook Subsidiary With $300 Million From Microsoft

While the rise of eBooks has been centered around Amazon’s Kindle devices and the Apple iPad, the NOOK from the last big-box book seller Barnes & Noble has remained a noble, if distant, competitor. Now, B&N has announced that it has formed a strategic partnership with Microsoft, forming a subsidiary company comprised of its digital and college businesses combined with $300 million from the software giant.

Study: Rising Co2 Levels Are Making Us All Fat

Tying together two of the most controversial topics of our time is a study which links rising carbon dioxide (Co2) levels to the so-called obesity epidemic. To be polemical, the greenhouse gas most often pointed to as the major contributor to global warming and climate change is making waistlines swell around the world. The research is the work of Danish researcher Lars-Georg Hersoug, who used data from a 22-year-long study on weight gain and heart health, and it could drastically change how we talk about these two issues. However, it could just be a classic case of correlation and not causation.

This is Darth Vader in a Kilt, Playing the Bagpipes, While Riding a Unicycle Through Portland [Video]

This is Brian Kidd, also known as The Unipiper, and he’s apparently a big fan of doing two very hard things at the same time. Like, for instance, playing the bagpipes while driving a unicycle. In this video, however, Kidd has gone the extra mile and outfitted himself with a Darth Vader mask while performing selections from the Star Wars score. Presumably, the kilt is included out of respect for tradition.

Judgment Day: The AARP Tweets About Biggie Smalls, Twice

The Internet often combines things you probably never would’ve even dreamed would’ve been in the same sentence together. Today, on the fifteenth anniversary of his death, we have the AARP tweeting about and Biggie Smalls. Because if there’s anything that the American Association for Retired Persons really relates to, it’s hardcore gangsta rap. The AARP’s tweets after the break.

Nintendo’s venerable Super Mario Brothers has been a video game staple for nearly three decades, while Vavle’s Portal was a surprise hit from five years ago. Clearly, these two needed to get together and create a bizarre retro platform shooter with portals and physics. Fortunately, that’s just what the fine folks over at Stabyourself have done with Mari0, and you can download it for free right now.

Gene Simmons Hints at Upcoming Angry Birds Game Featuring KISS

Gene Simmons has a lot more going on upstairs than you might think. In a recent interview with Industry Gamers, the legendary long-tongued bassist for KISS showed his business accumen while discussing the various projects he’s working on, including a digital translation service called Orstbo (did you know Simmons speaks five languages? Crazy!). Dear to his heart is an effort to take the KISS brand to places it has never been before, such as a Hello Kitty line and appearing in Archie Comics. However, Simmons dropped a real bunker buster by saying that he’s working on an Angry Birds deal. Yes, that Angry Birds.

Snoop Dogg Was On The Price is Right [Video]

The Price is Right is practically synonymous with giving away new cars, but it is generally an affair for the daytime house spouse, rather than, oh I don’t know, Snoop Dogg, who happened to appear on the afternoon game show, revealed to be sitting in a prize car. The contestant played “Check Out,” a game in which prices of everyday grocery items must be guessed, but she wasn’t alone, for she had popular gangsta rapper and grocery connoisseur Snoop Dogg in her corner, calling out to the audience to see if they had birds and could help guess the price of bird feed. You’d think now is the time to make a joke, but the fact that this was a thing that happened is funnier.
