Microsoft Once Again Giving Away Free Xbox 360 to Students With Purchase of a PC

Last May, Microsoft introduced a fiendish deal for students that included a free 4 GB Xbox 360 with the purchase of a Windows PC of $699 or more. This year, around the same time, Microsoft is reintroducing that deal. Starting May 20 in the U.S., students who purchase a qualifying PC with a price tag of $699 or more will  receive a free 4 GB Xbox 360. Starting today in Canada, students who purchase a $599 or more PC will receive a free 4 GB Xbox 360 as well.

The Apple Power Adaptor Makes a Pretty Sweet Bottle Opener

There are a variety of ways to open a bottle when a traditional bottle opener isn’t around. Here at Geekosystem HQ, we use Max’s belt, which, as you might’ve guessed, he’s wearing during the bottle opening process. It makes for an awkward moment or two when people who are unaware realize their beer is now crotchbeer. My favorite trick is the one where you bash the bottle cap on the side of a table, but that usually destroys part of the table. Twitter users @EvaZebra and @jesselupini have found another solution: The Apple iPad power adaptor. As seen in the picture above, it’s pretty much destiny.

The Pirate Bay Responds to U.K. Ban and Suggests Workarounds

The High Court recently ruled that U.K. ISPs must block torrent site The Pirate Bay. Though this sets a dangerous precedent, a large amount of torrenters probably responded, “Well that sucks, but it ain’t no thing,” as most torrenters probably realize that there are many popular torrent site alternatives, and various ways to get around an ISP block on The Pirate Bay if the alternatives aren’t up to par. The Pirate Bay recently responded to the High Court ruling and suggested a few ways around the blockage.

Public Service Announcement: You Can Play Chex Quest 1, 2, 3 for Free

If you had a good childhood, you’ll remember playing Chex Quest. If not, it’s a weird, non-violent first-person shooter running on the Doom engine that, as you may have guessed, featured a lot of Chex cereal themes. The original game was a promotional item that could be found in boxes of Chex cereal, and happened to be the first video game to be included with a box of cereal. Turns out you can download and play all three Chex Quests for free, right now, assuming you have a computer on which to do it. Why wouldn’t you want to? The game’s hero is the Chex Warrior, a human-like creature in an anthropomorphic piece of Chex cereal armor. I mean, c’mon.

Go Google “Zerg Rush” Right Now, Have Your Search Results Devoured

Google is rather fond of hiding little easter eggs in their search page, but today’s is a doozy. In an homage to Blizzard’s StarCraft series, if you search for “zerg rush” your screen will be filled with innumerable attackers that you must destroy. The perfect way to waste time on a lazy Friday.

Darwin Married His First Cousin, New Book Says You Shouldn’t Rule It Out

It pretty much goes without saying: You aren’t supposed to marry your cousin. Or is it really that bad? 31 out of the 50 United States have some kind of law outlawing or restricting it, and most people — I think — would tell you it’s “pretty weird” at best. Charles Darwin and Albert Einstien did it though, and according to a new book, you shouldn’t necessarily rule it out either. Consanguinity in Context by Alan H. Bittles of Murdoch University in Australia doesn’t go as far as to endorse cousin marriage, but it does argue that the dangers are greatly exaggerated. Whether or not it weirds you out, on the other hand, is entirely subjective.

Own This Rare Apple W.A.L.T. Prototype Phone For a Mere $8,000

Right now, you can try to buy a piece of Apple history on eBay: A rare Apple WALT prototype. According to seller russel400, “WALT” stands for Wizzy Active Lifestyle Telephone, which is presumably an unfortunate play off of “what-you-see-is-what-you-get” methodology. Though it looks more like a credit card reader, the WALT is a phone that sports handwriting recognition, fax, address book, caller ID, speakerphone, message pad, personalized ring tones, and even runs a modified version of Apple’s System 6 OS. It’s like the iPhone went back in time and had a baby with a Newton.

Reminder: Google’s New Privacy Policy Goes Into Effect Tomorrow, Last Chance to Delete Web History

The coming changes to Google’s privacy settings were announced a while ago, but they’ll be taking effect tomorrow, so it’s worth a reminder. The new settings will allow Google to share your data between apps, something it never did before. This means that your web-browsing history may start influencing the ads you see in Gmail, or that the items on your Calendar might start influncing the ads you see on Google Maps. There’s nothing you can really do to stop this, but you can, however, limit the information shared if you remove your Google web history today, before it starts getting shared around tomorrow.
