Shameless Publicity Stunts We Like

New Old Spice Ad Encourages You To Believe in Your Smelf, Has Sand DeLorean [Video]

You had me at sand DeLorean, but the rest of this new Old Spice ad is downright delightful. When their ads stop being hilarious, we’ll stop posting them. Also, those are sweet headphones.

This Weaponized Quadrotor is Fake, But Cool Viral Marketing for Upcoming Call of Duty Game

Activision has announced today that their next Call of Duty game — rumored to be Black Ops related — will be revealed on May 1st during the NBA playoffs on TNT so you know what that means: Let the viral marketing begin. The first piece, in what is sure to be an onslaught, is a special episode of the YouTube series FPS Russia featuring a military quadrotor with a machine gun. It may be fake, but that doesn’t make it any less fun to watch.

There’s an Angry Bird Chilling on Seattle’s Space Needle

Rovio has always been keen on finding interesting ways to publicize their record-breaking Angry Birds franchise. Angry Birds Space is no exception. To this end, a giant angry bird — the red one — has been affixed to Seattle’s Space Needle in honor of yesterday’s official release. Needless to say, the scale is impressive. How impressive, exactly? Well, the slingshot is about 300 feet long, and the bird is 35 feet in its own right. But are there any orbiting pigs to target?

Copies of Mass Effect 3 Launched Into The Stratosphere, Space Sphere Must Be Jealous

In order to drum up some excitement for Mass Effect 3 — as if there weren’t quite enough already — Electronic Arts has engaged in an interesting little publicity stunt: They’re launching a few copies of Mass Effect 3 into space. Well, near space; the kind of space you can get to with a weather balloon. Space travel aside, the important thing to note is that these copies will come to Earth before the official launch, and if you can find one, you’ll be able to play it.

Tim and Eric Return to Advertising With Amazing New Old Spice Ads

First, let me just say that I love Isaiah Mustafa. He’s a beautiful man, and his ads were, and still are, fantastic. However, when Tim and Eric get back in the driver’s seat for Old Spice advertising, it reaches a whole new level of amazing. These recent ads, which still feature the be-muscled Terry Crews as spokesman, are apparently too powerful to stay in their own commercials. You’ll see what I mean. Also, there’s something fantastic with a vending machine. Just…just watch them, below the break.

Twitter’s Recruitment Video is Awful-Fantastic

Twitter pushed out a home-brewed recruitment video yesterday and, friends, it’s awful. But it’s also fantastic. In it, you’re taken on a completely self-aware, magical journey through all the perks of working for Twitter, while simultaneously lambasting the many tropes of terrible corporate-made videos. Is there awkward, forced conversation? Yes. Terrible green-screening? You bet. You might be wondering what exactly that has to do with a dry erase portrait of Twitter CEO Dick Costolo with superimposed lips ala Clutch Cargo. You’re just going to have to watch it and find out. See the video, after the break.

Fast Food Chain Introduces Black Bun Darth Vader Burger

As a promotion for the release of The Phantom Menace in 3D, French-based fast food chain “Quick” is introducing the menacing looking Darth Vader burger, or Sith burger, if you will. It’s also introducing a Jedi burger but that one is just boring. According to this Google Translated source, the Sith burger bun is black due to a dye and not due to the blackness of its soul, different ingredients or concentration of tasty, tasty evil. Curious they called it the Darth Vader burger though. Shouldn’t it be the Darth Maul burger or the Anakin Skywalker burger? Looks like I’m not the only one that prefers the original trilogy.

Crazed, Chainsaw Wielding Robot is Viral Marketing, but for What?

I’ve often complained about viral marketing because when advertising is indistinguishable from reality, it feels more like a trick and a cheat. However, this series of videos purporting to “reveal” a robot attacking a human crowd with a chainsaw doesn’t try to pull one over on the audience. This string of mysterious videos, each from a different perspective at the fictitious BotEx 2011 conference in Tokyo, all end the same way: An ultra life-like robot fires up a chainsaw and marches ominously toward the crowd. See the videos after the break.

Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Product Placement [Infographic]

Whether it’s the Apple Newtons that were used early on in the X-Files or the delicious Reese’s Pieces devoured by E.T., geeky media is no stranger to product placement. Maybe it’s because the culture has such an affinity for toys and consumer goods in general, but whatever the reason, there has been a lot of it over the years. However, where it started and how successful it is aren’t as well known. Fortunately, there’s an infographic for that.

This post isn't brought to you by anyone in particular, but we could totally change that for the right price!

The Awkward Video Resumé of George Turnbull [Video]

This is George Turnbull, and he’s looking for a job. Well, not really. Actually he’s part of a series put on by a Canadian job-hunting website called Workopolis. But that doesn’t mean his earnest, awkward video resumé doesn’t make for good viewing. He’s quite the decadent dastard, as you can see.
