The Simpsons Made a Portal Joke Last Night

Some may say The Simpsons hasn’t been good for years — double-digit years, even — and whether or not that is true, the writers of the show have seemingly been trying to appeal to a very specific audience the past couple of seasons. Not too long ago, the Simpsons family went to E3 and there were a load of video game parodies, including God of War, then last week, the show’s iconic title sequence did a stellar parody of the Game of Thrones title sequence. Last night, toward the beginning of the episode, we have a Portal gag. The writers sure seem to be attempting to appeal to the geekier audience lately. We’re not opposed to it. Full scene after the break.

Do You Dare Attempt to Eat Jabba the Birthday Cake?

Artist and expert baker Kate Hopkins has taken the appetite-suppressing grotesquery of Jabba the Hutt and (for better or worse) combined that with a delicious cake. The result is this stunning confection, fit for a Hutt, presumably to celebrate a birthday. Stunning in every respect, my personal favorite aspect of the cake is the surprised, incredulous look on Jabba’s face. Henry, you are one lucky man.

You Should Drink These Portal 2 Cocktails, For Science

We’ve covered a good deal of video game related drinks, but this pair of Portal 2 cocktails created by James Dance, the proprietor of the bar/arcade Loading, are some eye-catching treats. Relying on Blue Curacao and Orangina for the color (with vodka and rum for the kick), this handsome pair is sure to teleport your tastebuds to new heights. Or get you plastered. But the most important thing: Colored sugar rings. Genius! Get the whole recipe, after the break.

Well, now you can relieve the experience of running around while being berated by an inert tuber with a blinking light stuck to it with the PotatOS from ThinkGeek. Happy days are here again!

Floppy Drive Quartet Sings Portal’s “Still Alive”

Floppy drives, one of the many forms of digital storage to become completely obsolete in the past decade or so, have one final use up their collective sleeve: They can play music in a way that is amusing to audiences that are familiar with with what floppy drives were originally used for. That is to say, in a few years, kids won’t find this amusing because the only frame of reference they’ll have is videos of floppy drive songs. But I digress. The joke is that the floppy’s are singing “Still Alive” when they are an entirely antiquated storage mechanism. Haha! Also it is Portal reference; the kids love those. Huzzah!

Tape of the performance after the jump. What? No one uses tapes any more either?!

New Portal 2 Video Spotlighting Turrets Reminds Us How Funny Portal 2 Will Be

Not only does this new Portal 2 video remind us of how funny the game is going to be, or how much we all love the sing-songy gun turrets, but it’s narrated by Aperture Science Founder and CEO Cave Johnson, voiced by the talented and hilarious J.K. Simmons. Portal 2 releases April 19, which is only a couple of weeks away.

Children’s Choir Performs Portal Closing Theme “Still Alive”

The director of the Gifford Children’s Choir of Racine, Washington is a self-described “VG addict,” and it showed in one of the choir’s recent performances: They sang “Still Alive,” the Jonathan Coulton-penned closing theme to Portal.

The video quality isn’t the best, but the performance is, well, a triumph. Also, in case you missed it: Ars Technica recently reported that Jonathan Coulton will be creating music for Portal 2, which is great news.
