Facebook Announces App Center, Paid Apps

Doubtlessly as a calculated move, Facebook, still barreling towards an IPO, has announced plans to introduce an app store and paid apps to the social network. It was just a matter of time, really. The store, called the App Center, is to be a central index of Facebook apps rated by things like user reviews an engagement. Apps that don’t meet quality guidelines won’t even be listed. With the App Center, Facebook users will finally have a central location at which to browse the apps that everyone is using and the apps that, in theory, don’t suck. Oh, and people are going to try and start selling you things there, naturally.

Woman Goes On Sunlight Diet, Unsurprisingly Dies of Starvation

People will do almost anything to lose weight, although admittedly, things like the Twinkie diet don’t sound that bad. A sunshine diet, on the other hand, sounds absolutely horrible, but that’s not going to keep some people from trying it. Then again, when was the last time you saw a fat plant, right? Taking that last bit into consideration, a woman from Switzerland decided to give this diet a shot. Did she lose weight? Definitely. Is she still, you know, alive to enjoy her svelte new physique? Unsurprisingly, no.

Valve’s DOTA 2 Will be Free to Play

If you don’t play MMOs, don’t play PC games, don’t have a smartphone or play games on one, or have been living under many rocks specially designed to withstand any kind of penetration from entertainment media, it is probably a surprise that the new, surging business model in the world of video games is that they’re being released for the low, low price of free. Just about every MMO nowadays is free to play, and some games that aren’t MMOs are starting to follow suit, especially in the smartphone gaming market. So, though it is great news for fans of MOBAs and Valve, it shouldn’t really be a surprise that DOTA 2 will be free to play.

An Aperture Science Dalek

Geekdom has thrust one fictional robotics company led by a rogue A.I. with an extremely soothing voice upon a pedestal. Geekdom also loves when their charming, scatterbrained Time Lord fights a rogue alien species encased inside a garbage can robot with a plunger arm that has the most annoying voice of all time, ever, out of anything. It was a only a matter of time before the two things combined, and now we have this rendering of an Aperture Science Dalek. Cake, and EXTERMINATION, will be available at the conclusion of this post.

Facebook Picture of Guy Siphoning Gas From Police Car Gets Him Arrested, As it Should’ve

20-year-old Michael Baker was photographed siphoning gas from a Jenkins Police Department car in Kentucky, as seen above, because that’s what the cool kids do, I guess. For extra added cool, he flashed the finger in the picture, which he claimed his girlfriend took. According to his girlfriend, Joann Sandelin, the picture was meant to be what one may call a funny humor joke. The couple posted the photo to Facebook, which led to the arrest of Baker.

U.S. Files Antitrust Suit Against Apple Regarding eBook Prices

A month ago, Apple and five other publishers were warned that the U.S. Department of Justice was seeking a case for collusion and price fixing regarding eBook prices. Now, it would seem those warnings weren’t full of hot air, as the Department of Justice has officially filed a lawsuit against Apple, Hachette Book Group, Simon & Schuster, HarperCollins, Macmillan, and Penguin, claiming that these publishers colluded to fix eBook prices. Word on the people familiar with the matter street says Simon & Schuster, Hachette Book Group, and HarperCollins already settled their suits, but Apple and Macmillan have refused to engage in talks, and deny that they have participated in an collusion to fix eBook prices.

Internet to Surpass DVDs in Movie Consumption

According to IHS Screen Digest, this year, more people will stream movies over the Internet than watch them on DVDs. However, though this is an monumental (though unsurprising) landmark for Internet streaming, Screen Digest notes that people will still be spending far less money streaming movies over the Internet than watching them on DVDs, even though they’ll be streaming movies over the Internet much more.
