Tortoise Has Leg Replaced With Swivel Wheel, is Doing Fine

Not quite as adorable or as endearing as the dog with four prosthetic legs, but still pretty adorable and endearing, the above tortoise, named Gamera, sustained severe thermal injury and tissue damage from an unknown source. The 12-year-old African spur-thighed tortoise had the damaged leg amputated up to the shoulder at Washing State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, and replaced with a swivel wheel — basically, one of those wheels commonly found on the bottom of office chairs. Don’t worry, the wheel wasn’t drilled into the turtle, but was attached to its shell with an epoxy adhesive. As a precaution, Gamera was given a feeding tube in order to keep his nutrition up, and he has gained three pounds since before the procedure took place. The little guy seems to be doing fine. Check out a video of him rolling around and eating some grass after the break.

Koala Wears Recovery Sweater and Wants to Eat Your Soul

Asha, an Australian koala was hit twice by a car while trying to cross a street. But, this bad ass animal survived, and was taken by a good samaritan from the side of the road to the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital, where it was given a sweater to wear during its recovery. While we’re certainly happy that this little guy survived such an ordeal, it’s still entirely possible that this is actually a zombie kola out to kill us all. I mean, just look at him. Sitting there. In that sweater.

Dog With Four Prosthetic Legs Is Heart-Meltingly Adorable

The first dog to be fitted with four prosthetic paws is thriving with his newfound mobility. Designed and fitted by Martin Kaufmann of Orthopets, the prosthetics have allowed Naki’o, who lost his own paws at just five weeks, to transition from crawling around on his belly to moving freely, running, jumping and even playing with other dogs.

Naki’o was abandoned as a puppy when his owners left their foreclosed home. During the Nebraskan winter, he stepped into an icy puddle in the home’s basement and got all four of his paws trapped in the freezing water. With severe frostbite, Naki’0 and the rest of his litter were transported to an animal rescue center. Veterinary technician Christie Tomlinson adopted Naki’o, and organized a fundraiser to pay for his two back legs to be fitted with the prosthetics. He came through the procedure so well that Orthopets decided to donate the remaining two prosthetic legs. The prosthetics are designed to replicate the muscle and bone structure of the dog’s natural limbs, and so allow him to do everything a normal dog would be able to do.
