Catwoman Cover Changed After Internet Outrage

DC Comics hasn’t exactly been filling Catwoman fans with hope during its latest series. The first issue of the New 52 Catwoman run has become synonymous with everything people find despicable about the depiction of females in comics. It is within this fiasco that the cover for Catwoman #0 was born. After much Internet criticism, the cover has since been changed to a slightly less cringe-inducing version.

Both are by artist Guillem March, but the second at least conforms to some semblance of reality. That isn’t to say that this will calm the clamoring — which is justified — but it’s a step in the right direction. The changes between the two are minute for the most part but important.

Her body isn’t wildly out of proportion, for starters, and she’s even apparently grown a bit modest and zipped up. The position she’s in manages to include a number of body parts somehow absent from the first image, and her head isn’t painfully slanted. Overall, a lovely change to what was a disappointing cover.

That first one… ever see Ice-T’s wife Coco?

Not only does this new cover look better, the character actually looks more attractive in it.

I cant get onboard with the “oh what a relief” that is being heralded across the blogosphere right now cause frankly this is kinda stupid. People bitching for the sake of having something to bitch about. If it wasn’t this image then it would be any number of other millions of images, this is just a convenient target because of the statue of the relaunch and its position therein.

I’m not trying to belittle anyones feelings about this, but seriously, get the fuck over it. Both are so egregiously incorrect from an anatomical point of view that neither one is better than the other and I had no idea which was the “offending” cover til I did some searching online.

Also whoever posted this you should make it clear which is the original and which is the new one cause frankly they are both incredibly incorrect anatomically and you don’t make it clear which is the new version.

Agreed, the reviewed cover is a great improvement.

The one on the left looks crazy crazy

Still boobs and butt and an impossible spine, but baby steps, I guess.

the problem is more that this is the whole “must show sexy parts” trope of comic book covers depicting female characters pushed to the most absurd extreme where CW is literally reduced to boobs and butts.

You’re right on all counts of the new cover still being incorrect anatomically, though.

Oh totally, I get that. This just seems like a lesser of two evils kinda thing to me, which maybe I didn’t articulate very well in my initial post. Trust me I agree with comics turning the female image into a semblance of sex organs embroiled in bad contortionist routine but to sound a winning sigh of relief at the new cover seems like a hollow victory at best.

It’s stupid fucking shit like this that makes me lose absolutely all fucking faith in future generations…

“…synonymous with everything people find despicable about the depiction of females in comics.”

Yeah? Well you know how the world has worked for fucking ever and flourished comic books far into the golden age?! Females fucking being depicted as voluptuous sexy characters!!! I’m not saying it’s the only reason for the success of comic books over its period of existence, but it sure as hell fucking contributed!!

Also, I remember when I was a kid and had to do something, watch something, read, eat, go somewhere I didn’t like… usually, since I was a CHILD, I was told to shove it and deal with it, and you know what? I didn’t die, I was actually surprised sometimes with things I disliked and sometimes not, but we don’t always get what we want, and that’s part of growing up and being a fucking adult, you don’t cry and get what you want, you’re given something and you’re fucking grateful for it, you shut up and be thankful, that’s all you do.

People like this today, who cry like little fucking girls, fucking make me sick. They could all die and rot in hell for all I care, and I’m not saying that in “internet speak”, I literally mean, if there’s a hell, I want them all to end up there because that’s where they fucking belong.

You have never watched Olympic gymnastics, apparently. Or been to the circus.

All of that being told to “shove it and deal with it” obviously made you a normal, well-adjusted adult without any kind of psychological or anger issues.

    Nope, none whatsoever.

  • Meh

Incredibly incorrect anatomically…? In reference to the picture on the right it’s only incorrect anatomically if Catwoman is American, because we all know that Americans are all overweight.

This is the stupidest fuss over nothing ever. It’s not like we haven’t seen an exaggerated pose before in comics. McFarlane used to do this to Spider-Man all the time, not that I think McFarlane is the greatest artist, but he was a good designer and that made for dynamic covers. She’s not spreading her legs. She’s not in bondage. She swinging from her whip… in a comic book!

I personally like the original one here better because she looks like she’s got a little meat on her bones, which I personally find more attractive. The other one looks too boney and anorexic.
