Dog Owners Forced to Forfeit Their Pets in China

Government officials in Jiangmen, China are banning residents from having dogs as pets. Set to take place at the end of August, the ban will require all current dog owners to take their pets to a drop-off center where they will either be adopted by people who live in rural areas or euthanized. The goal of the ban is to reduce the number of dogs in areas of Jiangmen that are most densely populated.

According to the city government’s official notice on “Strengthening the Management of Dogs,” any dog owner that wants to keep their pet rather than surrender it to people unknown or sudden death will be allowed to apply for a license. However, it seems as though only people who plan to use their dogs for security for a warehouse or other business will be granted licenses.

According to the Chinese-language newspaper the Jiangmen Daily, 42 residents of the city have died from rabies in the past three years. Human safety in such a densely populated area most likely plays a key role in the decision to ban dogs. China has a history of responding to rabies threats by sanctioning the killing of dogs. However, it is unclear how many of those rabies attacks where caused by pet dogs instead of stray dogs.

An unnamed police officer in Jiangmen, told the China Daily:

“Our aim is not to kill all the dogs in the city’s urban areas, but we hope to create a better environment for the city by banning the keeping of dogs. We hope dog owners and residents can understand and cooperate with law enforcement personnel.”

While promoting the best circumstances for human health is obviously a worthwhile goal, it seems wholly unfair to require citizens to give up their pets. It is also a tremendous waste of life if the dogs are killed rather than placed elsewhere. This may be one case where what seems best on paper, and what seems right, totally diverge.

I foresee many restaurants in Jiangmen going under as a result of this measure./humor

that’s horrible. they could instead make and enforce laws that all pet dogs must be spayed/neutered and have up to date rabies vaccines. but that would make too much sense i suppose

This is just tragic.being an animal lover.  China is so backwards when it comes to dogs, cats and other animals.  My fear is that they’ll just give these poor pets to the food venders that sell in the streets dog meat..China  government has no compassion for animals BOYCOTT anything from China.

42 residents in 3 years. And how many people die from car crashes or other incidents! I have always loved the chinese culture, the colors, the art, history. But all this animal cruelity is making me think other wise. But i also here there treatment of people is not the best either. But atleast we have a voice and the torture the animals go through over there is beyond words. I have not read many stories about the people abuse and such but i have read about there way of population control with female babies…. There is animal cruelity everywhere, some more extreme and from what i have seen in china and places it is horrid! I cant blame the whole country cause there are animal rights groups throughout china and the surrounding area. Why doesnt the government do anything. I hope there means of getting rid of peoples pets is not gonna be like the big cull i read about where people was clubbing and maming peoples pets in the streets and any tom, dick, and harry has the right to do it., God rabies, i have not seen a out break report of that in years, another excuse im assuming to kill innocent animals coming from a place that is so advanced in technology, ya think they could advance in animal welfare.

This is appalling.  They haven’t even allowed sufficient time for people to make alternative arrangements.  Its a sick idea anyway.  What next, excessive children to be put down?

God only knows how much I appreciate NOT having to live in China. What is next that is getting taken away? Chosing your own mate? After having the one-child policy and aborting further pregnancies western countries are beginning to wonder in which century China really ives?
