My first reaction when I read the headline and saw the picture was to cut it open and let the little guy out into a pond. My second reaction was to think “Would he be okay in a pond or would I accidentally just kill him due to not knowing anything about this breed of turtle?” And my third reaction was “Is this even a turtle, or is this a tortoise? Wait, what’s the difference between a turtle and a tortoise to begin with? Why don’t I know the difference between a turtle and a tortoise? I’m 26 years old, I should know these things. If a little six year old kid comes up to me and asks me what the difference between a turtle and tortoise is I’m not going to have any idea what to say. I suppose I could lie to him, or her, but that’s only going to lead to some awkward moments for him, or her, in the future with school teachers, or even a job opportunity far into their adulthood. A reputable business CEO is going to offhandedly mention something about a tortoise and he, or she, is going to incorrectly correct them by telling them the difference I explained to him, or her, between a turtle and a tortoise which isn’t actually true. That’s not a good way to begin a business relationship. This is really depressing, and it goes to show how apathetic some humans can be to non-human life. Setting aside the issue of making living creatures key chain ornaments, would it really have been cost prohibitive to make the punch holes in the sack for the little guy to breathe through? Also, who buys this and doesn’t realize quickly that there is no way for oxygen to get then, and the whole thing is just an ornamental death trap.

We can shrug this off as just another weird thing the people in the East do, but I was at a harbor in Connecticut where I saw live lobsters in a tank used as the little plush toys in those claw machine games, where if you actually managed to grab a lobster and drop it through the hole, you would win a free lobster. Though a different lobster, because they one you caught is destroyed because it isn’t fit for eating.

I used to work in a pet pet shop! when we sold fish filled with water and air (atleast 1/2 a bag of air to water) the fish would actually use up all that oxygen within 1/2 hour to an hour!? so i would think that the air in these sealed bags would not last that long !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think that, if the baggie on the key chain could actually OPEN, then it wouldn’t be so much of a problem, because then you can take the pet out to feed it, and give it some fresh air and much needed exercise. It shouldn’t be so hard to invent such kind of baggies, you know.

1) You are assuming everyone eats meat. Some people don’t. With the knowledge humans have now about nutrition it is possible to lead a completely meat-free life.
2) You are assuming those who eat meat always get it through acts of cruelty. There are ways of killing animals to make sure they suffer as briefly as possible and some people are sure to do this.
3) You are comparing the killing of animals for FOOD – something which is natural – with the imprisonment of animals in plastic bags for novelty? Really?

when you’re poor and struggling to put any semblance of food on the table keeping a marine animal in a bag as a pet to sell to teenagers and foreigners isn’t an issue all… after all the purchaser is responsible for removing the pet from the bag… have you never purchased fish for your fish tank? These were two dollars each..(the turtles anyway) so I Bought about 20 of them. When I got home I released them from their plastic prisons and released them into my pond where they now live. They grew like crazy. They’re almost double the size from when I bought them.

It’s really quite simple. You put any animal in a plastic bag with no air, ot’ll die. Any idiot knows that. That’s what makes it disgusting.

Not every places in the world are as developed as America where we have abundance of resources and food, people need to survive. There are many countries in Asia where people do eat dogs (and no, I’m not American, and yes, I have lived in Asia and seen it for myself)  My question is, how is eating dogs any more cruel than eating pigs, or chickens, or cows?  Asians probably do have a different attitude to animal cruelty than, say Europeans, but when human life is precarious, why would animal welfare be a major concern.  Nevertheless, this does seem to be an extremely unfortunate trend, especially considering the wildlife implications of all those released Brazilian turtles.

Just because you keep a dog for a pet does not make it a viable option for a food source. (Indians probably think we are appalling for eating cows. That being said, certainly there are people in China who are either oblivious to animal suffering, or financially exploiting animal cruelty for personal gain, or so poor that they will rely on whatever means necessary to feed themselves and their family. There’s no shortage of people in North America that exhibit appallingly cruel behaviour to animals in the name of profit, and those are often the people that raise our animals for food, which means that many of us actively continue to support that industry.
