A Map of Inception… By Christopher Nolan

Behold! Christopher Nolan‘s very own plot map of Inception.

You may now discuss why there appears to be no kick to get out of limbo.

um.. as far as i remember, one cant be kicked out of limbo, they have to die in limbo to get out if it. so yeah thats why theres no kick in limbo

Didn’t Cobb and Mol (Mal?) get into Limbo before and just had to wait until their sleep wore off? And since Limbo is so far down, real world time might be a couple hours, but in Limbo time it’s like 50 years. So yeah, there is no kick to get out of Limbo, you just have to wake up in real life, which can make you go crazy in Limbo (like Mol/Mal did).

They didn’t wake up because the sleep chemical wore off, they woke up because they laid down on some train tracks and were killed by an oncoming train. Death is the only way out of Limbo. That’s why Mol killed herself in the real world. She thought death was the only way to wake up.

I’m going to label this as intentionally misleading. I saw this same drawing in the DVD extras of inception, only it had an additional macro drawing of the dream state (sorry, can’t provide photo, but its on the DVD version of Inception, under the “The Inception of Inception” bonus feature. This macro drawing shows the same valley as above, but to the right there is a “send” upward climb that starts from…limbo. So yes, there is a kick from limbo.

Also, the drawing above has a line that goes from Limbo to the column where “kick” is for all three dream levels.

Why there isn’t a hashed section marked kick, like in the three dream states? Because, if you read the key for the hashed areas, thats for “dramatic events” which in the movie there was no dramatic exit from Limbo, hence no hashed area.
