We Approve of Chrome’s New Sad Tab Page

We’re big fans of Google Chrome, and based on our site stats, more than a quarter of our readers are too. We’re not fans, though, of the “sad tab” page which pops up whenever Chrome blows up, as happens with some frequency whenever Google updates the browser with a few bugs still intact.

That said, we approve of the new sad tab page in the latest Chromium build, which shamelessly panders to its techy early-adopter audience by quoting Dr. McCoy.

Some foreign Chrome users report a gorier crash page with a bullet hole through the sad tab’s head. This seems excessive.

    i thought something was wrong with my laptop. after i shut it down the “sad tab” he’s dead, jim came up and I was like oh no a virus. i’m glad it’s not.

    That’s just a joke or a funny reference made by the devs, don’t worry guys it’s part of Chrome browser go check it out: type that chrome://kill/ in the adress bar ^^

    Thank you for posting this. I was thinking my laptop was infected. Restored the device several times and spent countless hours. Nice to find an answer.

    not funny.  Thought something was seriously wrong so I ran my anti virus…found two unwanted critters and then removed them.  Then next day….bam…black screen.  When I try to open in safe mode am unable.  I’m not so sure some hacker hasn’t decided to us this  “He’s dead, Jim” isn’t trying to have some mean “fun”.  I’m not amused.

    it happened to me my computer randomly shut down !! i just turned it on again though and it works im so glad that i have something on my computer that stops virus’s ;)

    This is a stupid idea. It looks sinister, and people think it’s a virus. If people see at flash while shutting down, they don’t have time to read the text and freak out.

    Windows updates with automatic restart (Window will restart in 10 minutes) with cause this He’s Dead message in Chrome when it intitiates the shut down cycle. So to a casual user, it’s pretty scarier, because this message shows and then the computer reboots.

    I really do not think this is at all funny, incredibility juvenile, puerile stupid, costing our business clients very real time and real dollars trying to get this thing fixed.

    Maybe an error screen that does NOT look like a virus, that looks like a normal error screen, so users can see straight away, right, it’s a Google Crome error screen, not some idiot hacker breaking into my system, that would be a seriously sensible move.

    For me? Stay right away from Google Chrome.

    The problem is that some people are actually named Jim or are related to someone who is, and Star Trek is not the first thing they think of when they read this message. It only popped up for a second so I was unable to read the message underneath, and was freaked out until I thought of the Captain.

    I was actually watching star trek and was half way through the episode when ‘He’s Dead Jim’ popped up then the browser and all windows started shutting down then the computer shut down. I was totally WTF? I had been playing with backtrack on another computer and had used metasploit to look through the cam on this one. I thought maybe I had left the meterpreter session open and someone had taken over. when I rebooted the computer said windows is finished installing updates. I searched google and found this page and was totally relieved …..

    I didn’t like it at all, since it did it upon shutdown, for a few seconds. I didn’t know it was Chrome doing it, since it disappeared very fast. Shouldn’t play with people’s nerves like this. In fact, I’m running a full scan. It could be the virus redirecting me to this page. Sheesh!
