Icelandic Experiment Plans to Trap CO2 in Limestone

With carbon-reducing technologies only just now going mainstream and dangerous amounts of the greenhouse gas already in the atmosphere, scientists are considering drastic solutions to the problems of global warming. One such approach beginning next month in Iceland aims to trap CO2 in limestone, removing it from the atmosphere.

The 6-12 month test, called CarbFix, has a short-term goal of giving Iceland’s geothermal plants a means to trap and store carbon brought up during operation and become truly carbon-neutral. The longer-term implications, however, could be on a global scale.

Here’s how it works: Scientists will pump water filled with carbon, so-called “seltzer water,” down into the basalt rock that makes up 90% of the nordic island nation. Basalt is a porous, highly reactive stone created through volcanic activity, of which Iceland has plenty. Once the basalt comes in contact with the carbon-laden water, it should react with the calcium in the rock, trapping the green house gas in limestone.

Now, scientists are already warning that even if successful, their plan is not a stand-alone solution. Moreover, they’re not even sure how successful their experiment will be. However, the Times of India reports that some on the project see this more as an opportunity to develop the technology and train younger scientists in how to trap and store carbon.

Long as I’m not being forced to fund the waste of time, they can do whatever they want. Man’s production of CO2 or lack thereof won’t make any impact on the environment.

i cant believe this!! me and my sister just got two i-pads for $42.77 each and a $50 amazon card for $9. the stores want to keep this a secret and they dont tell you. go here, EgoWìn.com

I didn’t think climate deniers were smart enough to read tech blogs — wow!

But Jackbondnj16 raises an important point.  Suppose, for the sake of argument:1.  All the technical stuff gets worked out.2.  We can work out how much we can reduce global warming by reducing CO2 in the air.  (As opposed to other causes, like sunspots, and volcanic activity, and other other gases, CH4, O3, H2O, this that and the other, and have it all measured, and have it all worked out to an acceptable level of confidence.)Who pays how much?  Does “the West” pay to pump the CO2 out (reducing jobs, and hence economic growth) while China and India keep burning coal and Indonesia and Brazil burning forests (and taking “our” jobs)?  Do they say “You already got rich, now it’s our turn”?If they’re going to keep pumping CO2 faster than we can take it out, aren’t we just as well off to keep the party going?  If Rome is going to burn anyway, why not fiddle?

The modern definition of “smart” is ones capacity for logic; If one employs logic with minimal research it is obvious that CO2 is not a likely culprit for climate change . It does, however, prove to be an excellent excuse for an extra tax (carbon tax) which will eventually trickle down to us! Another excuse is very invasive scientific experimentation: It could possibly negatively impact the environment/cost taxpayers money.

It is also negative comments like yours that suppress the  ”every day” sheeple’s desire to investigate this. A Classic method in which “out of box” thought is misdirected is through classification into groups of perceived “crazies”. e.g. climate deniers, 911 truthers, sasquatch abductees etc.
