Coke’s “Cone of Shame” Commercial Wants You to Spend Less Time on Your Phone, More Time Drinking Soda

This is what all the racist critics of their Super Bowl ad should have to wear.

Have you forgotten what your baby looks like? Do you live-tweet first dates? Coke released a parody ad yesterday with a solution for “social media addicts” who have deeper relationships with their followers than their family–a Social Media Guard designed to force human interaction, or prevent your dog from ripping out it’s stitches.

Here’s the commercial, which is getting a lot of buzz on social media platforms right now.

Coke’s youtube channel for the ad asks, “Did you know that the world spends 4 million years online every month?” (I didn’t, but I’m also not sure what that even means.) “If you’re watching this video on your mobile phone, it’s time to put it down. Look around you, there is probably someone special you can share a real moment with. Enjoy it with an ice-cold Coke :)”

Yes, as that emoticon addendum suggests, it is coincidentally still possible to drink a classically bottled Coke while weaning yourself off social media. However, I don’t have high hopes for that cone couple about to have dinner; it looks like eating would be a struggle while wearing the guard. Also difficult? Looking both ways for traffic, but maybe that’s part of the carbonated corporation’s plan.

As a parody, the commercial is obviously well done, but I’m not a huge fan of being shamed for Internet use by a major corporation with such savvy social media marketing, even as a joke.

Personally though, I like my advertisements the same way I like my soft drinks: nutritionally empty, and Pepsi. I would tweet, post, and blog about Britney Spears’ “For those who think young” over this any day.
