Bryan Cranston Might Play Lex Luthor, So Maybe There’s Hope After All [Rumor]

Can we get Aaron Paul in there to play... aw man, anybody? Jimmy Olsen maybe? The Flash? I don't know!

Regardless of what you feel about the Man of Steel sequel or the decision to cast Ben Affleck as Batman, you’ll be happy to hear that there are pretty strong rumors that Bryan Cranston of Breaking Bad has been cast as Lex Luthor. Holy God, that’s all I’ve ever wanted out of anything.

Yesterday Cosmic Book News reported that Cranston has signed on to to a six “appearance” deal throughout a number of different DC-led films. So I guess what they took away from the Marvel Cinematic Universe is that bald authority figures hold the world together? Because Lex Luthor is great, but he’s not exactly Nick Fury. You know, what with the being evil thing.

In addition to this news, Ben Affleck also supposedly got a 13 appearance deal for his Batman role. So yeah, they’re definitely working on that Justice League stuff. Although 13 seems a bit high — I don’t even think there are 13 movies in Phase 1 and 2 of Marvel’s stuff combined yet. Maybe if you count the Hulk films you can just hit it. Even if you do, there aren’t any characters who make it into literally every movie, so the idea that Batman’s going to show up across at least 13 films is pretty staggering to think about.

Rumors are also surfacing that yes, Matt Damon is going to get offered a part — Aquaman, Cosmic Book News assumes. Aquaman? I know, nerds, he’s not as much of a joke as everybody makes him out to be, but for real? We’re talking about an Aquaman movie and a Wonder Woman flick is still considered too risky. Yeah, whatever. I see how it is.

Either way, the bit about Cranston is surprisingly good news if it’s true. After all, we all know how great he is at shifting from witty and charismatic to malicious and terrifying — two things you need to have down to play a good Luthor.
