Taloned Drone Can Snatch Prey From The Sky Like An Eagle [Video]

On hearing yesterday’s news that Carnegie Mellon University had developed a robot that turns into a tank, one of my fellow Geekosystem editors pointed out that at some point, we’re just asking for a violent robot uprising. He’s not wrong. I can’t imagine my co-worker is going to be exactly delighted, then, by the University of Pennsylvania’s newest robotic offering, a quadcopter drone equipped with a mechanical talon that allows it to snatch prey from the sky like a robotic eagle. While clearly terrifying, it’s also pretty awesome, and you can get a look at in action below.

University of Pennsylvania researchers 3D printed the three-clawed talon, which they designed by studying the claws of real eagles in flight to learn more about their hunting tactics. Like an actual eagle, the drone they’ve developed can swoop down and seize its target without slowing down much, thanks to a mechanism that allows its robot claw to swing back behind it as it returns skyward, allowing it to keep momentum.

So far the robot is only able to carry off stationary objects, but the way drone technology is moving forward, it won’t be long before this eagle is swooping down on and carrying off live salmon and tiny, terrified mechanical rabbits.

Only yesterday I was wondering if Drones would someday be able to let us quickly deliver an infant / toddler from home to the daycare before heading off to the office. Now where did I put that drone controller?

Not to mention how handy for anonymous delivery of…baggies…a claw to drop it into waiting hands, the customer having paid via plastic just minutes before.

Also, this clawed-drone may be our only option for the common man to fight other drones….in the name of protecting the privacy of our homes and yards and our topless-sunbathing daughters beside our pools. Imagine drone-dogfights over our neighborhoods. Its a whole new world, people.

Ooo and mail delivery! Automation could take over the daily mail delivery, free up all those humans who work for the post office, take from them their insurance and livelihoods so they are free to starve.

You see son, when a mommy and daddy love each other very much they wait 9 months for a quadricopter to deliver a baby to their chimney.

Congrats, Commies. Tax dollars at work! This can only come to a bad end, as all things come to a bad end whenever State-worshipping psychopaths are running the show.

These “Scientist’s” mayfind these Robot’s Facinating. I find them Terrifying as I can already see the total privacy invation usages of this technology. The government or who ever control’s the robot’s will be capable of killing anyone anytime the choose. And like the “Terminator’ movie’s i see that imaginary world becoming a frightening reality just as we are now seeing Orson well’s 1984 coming into being now. Can Soylent Green be far behind?

They can already kill anyone anytime they choose in theory, that power came with the invention of modern guns. But for the most part they’ve been keeping reasonably benign so I’m not too worried yet.

In Cowboys and Aliens, that how the drones snatched up all those poor townspeople.
