25 Instances of Bad College Nostalgia, as Explored Through Everyone’s Engineering Professor

Everyone has terrible college memories about the questionable things their teachers sometimes did, regardless of how good said teacher actually was overall. While some of us were wondering exactly what our lit teachers just did to us, other students had teachers whose very field didn’t involve the intricacies of clear, concise communication. Everyone knew an engineer major while they were in school. This is what those poor souls had to suffer.

Hahah, whining student meme. Seriously – nuclear fission = powerpoint lecture? Get off it. Some of these made me cringe for the students, but more of them made me feel sorry for your engineering prof.

Seriously I know this guy. Handwritten Transparency’s are fine if you have legible handwritten. It is probably true that the department/school may be forcing him to tell us to buy the book, but it is still wrong. I love going in-depth, but if I another class or work, I’ve got to go and I’m not feeling guilty. Whine, Blah, Whine, Blah, etc . . . Whew! Flashbacks are strong sometimes.

  • http://twitter.com/MartianEmpress Rezeya Montecore

This is why I became a history major, spent four years having open discussions with people who actually respected me, never had to suffer a single class taught by a professor’s perpetually drunk pet TA, didn’t encounter any sexism, and came out with a “useless” degree that taught me how to be a thoughtful, well-rounded human being and, most importantly, DID NOT QUALIFY ME FOR A CORPORATE JOB ADMINISTERED BY EVEN BIGGER FUCKWADS THAN THIS PROFESSOR.

You’re not well-rounded if you can’t do math.

This right here, my nomination for feminist of the year. Deal with sexism, pffft I’ll just find myself a nice little safety zone where I can ignore it exists.

Seriously, it’s like saying it’s African-Americans’ fault for suffering racism in the States when they could have just gone back to Africa and not dealt with relevant social issues. Deciding to willingly stick your head in the sand like an ostrich doesn’t make you a well-rounded human being, it makes you an idiot.

But don’t worry, I’m not taking the comment to heart. The above 3 comments pretty much express how much I think of your opinion.

Definitely had “Oh no, I didn’t realize I was 10 minutes over time” in my second year. He taught us Thermo and Dynamics, which happened to be back to back so he just cut 10 minutes out of Dynamics to do “one last example” in Thermo yet always managed to finish Dynamics on time….

Also had a prof famous for how he dealt with e-mails: if your message extended past the opening screen (ie it was longer than 3 lines) the response would always be “Come see me” Now, I do understand we were lucky to have profs who were actually willing to talk to us, but this guys office was a black hole for time. A one word response would have been much better.

Engineers complain about how hard their classes are, but the degree is worth something and often times grad school is optional for them. Liberal arts majors complain about how no one takes their degree seriously, but let’s face it, we weren’t losing sleep over those classes and our knowledge has little practical value. I think both fields can come together in their mutual hatred for the business school, which is composed of drunken frat boys who are now responsible for our country’s (and our retirement fund’s) financial future. They worked as hard as the liberal arts majors and they make more in a year than most of us will in a lifetime…those smart SOBs.

How does it feel to make 20k a year while we Engineering majors make 60k to 80k doing really good stuff? Oh wait, your one of those liberals who whine about distribution of wealth…I remember….liberals are liberal arts majors..it makes sense.

  • Melancon31

Beautiful summary! I’ve experienced these both in school and in practice…makes me question my chosen profession.

  • Blahblah

    You sir are an idiot.

  • n8loller

Well those aren’t engineers either. They are IT folks, and have degree programs in the same vein as business. Actually, I think IT is taught in the business college at my school.

…if some of them are engineers, they were the people in the bottom of the class that couldn’t land a real engineering job.

  • n8loller

Also, all the people who can’t handle engineering in the first few years usually drop out and enroll in the business school.

  • Megan

Wow, really? How long were in you in engineering school? I’ve never had problems with sexism at my school and I was there for 5 years. In fact, I experienced less sexism in the engineering department then I did in the language department – which is what my minor is in. And perpetually drunk TA? What school did you go?

I considered taking history or art as my major coming straight out of high school because that was the area I was best at. Then I decided to do something different with my life because I wanted to challenge myself with something new. Perhaps I don’t understand your definition of well rounded, but in my opinion it is a person who is willing to try many things – even if its difficult. Your post makes it sound like you ran away from engineering because it was too hard for you it. I refuse to be judged by someone who couldn’t stick it out through the program and then has the balls to call themselves “well-rounded”. Especially when I survived it and it was the area I was weakest in.

Furthermore, I cannot understand how you could be any sort of “thoughtful person” when you essentially just called every engineer in the field sexist, narrow-minded, and, let’s not forget, “fuckwads”. Don’t get me wrong. I know engineers have their issues. Yet, I think you should withhold your judgement until you meet more engineers.

Nice points. Impressive perspective; a little alliteration for your well rounded judgement.

With regard to Ms. Montecore’s drunk TAs? Um, not sure what engineering school she was referring to (Phoenix online?), but our TAs are Master’s and PhD candidates who spend about 15 hours a day between coursework, research, and correcting papers. Alcohol really isn’t a part of their life. Like at all.

Ms. Montecore may feel her thoughts are well rounded.

    Maybe so.

    But so are coneheads.

Yes, pehaps you are correct….however, when it comes to having THE BEST college memories, you must have attended THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY!

  • Hannah

It’s probably because the professor wrote a chapter in the book and will get a royalty for every copy sold. Why not require every student to buy it then?

  • Guest

Dear yessir, Ysny is arguing that going back to Africa would have accomplished nothing, just as avoiding sexism accomplishes nothing.  In both cases (women and African Americans), staying and “fighting the good fight” is what accomplishes social change, not running away from hardships.

Despite the sarcastic and biting tone, I believe Ysny is actually applauding both groups here.  Both African Americans in the US and women in engineering have fought hard and made a great deal of progress, but both groups still have a long way to go before reaching complete equality with their peers.  Good luck to both groups.

    Sincerely,
    Woman with Advanced Engineering Degree

13 describes one particular professor at Rutgers (I won’t name anyone).

He goes off on tangents (Mech.eng. measurements) and therefore doesn’t teach, but expected everyone to follow the entire lecture.

Average on midterm: 40.30; I got a B in the course because I was actively in class and usually had an answer.

So glad I’m done with him for now–but I have him again very soon.

I studied Engineering at the University of Technology, Sydney and I had always assumed the Professors in Universities in the U.S.A were of better quality than in Australia because all of high technology has either been invented or further developed in the U.S.A. Also the U.S.A to date, has been the only country on Earth to have landed not two but 12 astronauts who walked on the Moon.

The pictures with the included remarks and the posted comments have confirmed for me that the lecturers in the U.S.A are of no better quality than in Australia.

I was reminded of that Futurama episode in which Professor Farnsworth tells Fry: But Fry, I can’t teach, I’m a college Professor!

didn’t realize that people actually have to try to get into Madison. I guess you would have to if you’re stupid.

you probably went to some low-rate engineering school. Your curriculum doesn’t matter unless you’re in the top 10 (or I’ll be nicer and say top 20).

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_SOLTHV4XXG4BNKPRAXTGCCFYIA Mike M

North Carolina State? where the hell is that?

Don’t bitch. you don’t even go to a top 5 school. Your classmates are the people who we thought were stupid back in high school.

Computer Science in the art of programming, maintaining a network of computer and servers isn’t taught in that degree. Sadly there are very few schools that actually have a vein of computer science for us Network Admins, and to boot the one thing that does help us also hurts us which are the certifications, since it is so easy to get them they don’t mean a thing anymore. :(

  • Comondu

anyone knows tha ones for med school?

  • http://profiles.google.com/rlinfinity Rashid Mansoor

The mistake lies in students who assume Computer Science has to do with computers. It doesn’t.

  • anonymous

Found this very funny, the meme and the comments, but I must say, a lot of my fellow engineering majors are very uptight and conceited.
Not all engineering majors or schools are created equal, but why does that mean we have to call everyone out on how much better school A is than school B? I just don’t see the point to being that full of yourself. Idk maybe the comments are taken out of context.
For the record, I go to MSOE. Not the best engineering school in the world, but in the top 10 for undergrad universities according to U.S. News for whatever that’s worth.

  • Hamsandwichnobread

I go to a private highschool and this is true for me now….. *sigh* at least im prepared

  • Fuckyou

This is also true for sciences yet you only hear the engineers talking about this stuff…

  • guest

In all fairness, sometimes it’s just easier to hand-draw something (like the visual conceptualization of a data structure, or a trace) than it is to “draw” it using a computer. The professors I had would draw on the board for that purpose, but I suppose a transparency would work the same.

  • Amscavetta

Have you even been to a university lately dude? This isn’t just whining, this is real life.

  • Izkata

#14 is often correct.  If you know the concepts, you can derive the “obscure” facts.

  • Trish

lol,,,,this is what I am experiencing now at CSULB…Why did I choose to go there on the first place,,,most teachers (have Ph.D) suck,,,,only one or two make things “reasonable” for the class. Everything here is SO TRUE….

  • me

you dont even get the concepts!  It ment the prof can derive equations for nulclear fission but cant set up a power point.  And I have experienced this many times as an engineering student.  I have profs with PHD’s that can do amazing things but they can’t properly or successfully download zipped folders from an online drop box

  • Jnewton92

My favorite was when I would send my Prof. an e-mail that had multiple questions and he would always, and I mean always!, respond “sure.”  His e-mail signatures were longer than his responses…

  • http://www.technodo.com/ Andrew

Nice collection. By the end, I was getting pretty annoyed at him and that smug smile.

  • Lankea

    Oh gosh

  • Kevinzheng97

They’re saying if you derived Nuclear Fission then you shouldn’t have trouble learning about powerpoints. If someone solved N=NP you would think he would be a good problem solver.

  • theBeast

    Ohio State for the Win!!!!

  • kfed

I am a female and an engineering major. Ill have hell with my classes and have to study my ass off to pull a C but I can gladly say I didn’t take the easy way out. Just because someone is an engineer doesn’t mean they aren’t well rounded people. In fact id say they are more well rounded because of having to think outside of the box, work with other on long tediious projects but still managing self control, and maintain a social life. Don’t talk shit about what you don’t know.

  • Hannelore

What? Maybe she’s just bad at math, or, gasp! Loves history!

The sad part is that this is 99% of this has happened to me.
