Facebook Owned the Internet in 2010

The most searched term in search engines in 2010 was “facebook,” with “facebook login” in second, and “facebook.com” and “www.facebook.com” further down the list. Gee, you’d think the most popular social network on the planet had a blockbuster movie made about it or something.

According to Experian Hitwise, Facebook accounted for 3.48% of all Internet searches last year and knocked “myspace” down to fifth place from second place in 2009, when “facebook” was also at the top. The term “facebook login” had previously placed ninth, which means that more people have joined The Social Network in a year or people have simply forgotten that Facebook has a domain name. (“thefacebook.com”??) New to the list was “mapquest” and knocked off the list were “myspace.com” and “yahoo mail,” which had been in fifth place in 2009. (“mail.yahoo.com” was still the third-most-visited Web site.)

Also from the press release: The most searched personality, movie, and TV show were respectively Kim Kardashian, Star Wars, and Dancing With the Stars.
