Fans Create Pokémon MMO Because Nintendo Refuses To

Nintendo has always stuck by the notion that they’d never make a Pokémon MMO, and judging by all of the amount of available Pokémon MMOs, we find that Nintendo sure is good at sticking by notions. Because of this notion, some fans took matters into their own hands, and heavily modded the Game Boy Advance Pokémon Fire Red into a PC MMO.

Being a mod, the game is free to play, and sans cash shop. Appropriately dubbed PokeMMO, the game not only allows players to multiplay through the entire vanilla game together, but includes standard MMO practices, such as friends lists, party creation, chat, and tournament battles. Along with those features, PokeMMO also sports controls designed for a PC with a mouse, as well as an improved inventory system.

Longtime fans of the series will note that Nintendo remains stubborn (as always) to bring a full entry of the series to anything other than a handheld console, as well as refuses to offer any kind of legitimate online gameplay. So, it’s nice to see fans bringing at least a partial dream of most Pokémon fans to fruition.

PokeMMO is still in its alpha stage, but you can already connect and use basic features of the surprisingly populated game. Check out a video of PokeMMO in action below:

I may give this a shot if there’s a playable Team Rocket class.

It’s not that Nintendo refuse to. The developers and creators of Pokémon see Pokémon as a game that is DESIGNED to be handheld. It’s a social game, one you take with you to play with friends. Making it on a home console goes somewhat against this

It has FULL online features already for battling and trading…adding an overworld to that would just be superfluous.

It’s not stubborn, they just know what works

  • Fail

They know what works? I can tell you with 100% certainty that a more sandbox-y, open world pokemon game would be a million times more exciting then having to play another current pokemon. When you step back and really see Pokemon today it’s just adding more bells and whistles. NIntendo and Game Freak would make a killing (more of a mass genocide) if they made a Pokemon game like Skyrim. Honestly PokemonMMO needs a lot of work, not just because it’s in alpha but because it’s just FireRed with some modifications to make gameplay easier and other people in the game with you. I feel that PokemonMMO will be awesome but it needs it’s creators to make something better.

Just play WoW Mysts of Pandoria – pet battling is totally like Pokemon MMO…It actually drew me back into WoW during the beta just for pet battling though I haven’t decided to buy the expansion…its such a time suck.

But, It’s not pokemon. Your “solution” doesn’t solve anything. The problem is that people want something new after 10(guesstimated number) games that do the same damn thing. Even if it’s bad they can say they tried.

I’m pretty sure a World of Warcraft type of pokemon with combined expansions would make Pokemon the most money making game in the world…The creators are fucking stupid and clearly dont care what the people want.

No, you’re just not a real Pokemon fan if you don’t think that this is the next best way to play Pokemon. You can actually TRAVEL with your friends all around the Kanto Region and (presumably) the Sevii Islands aswell!
This also makes me wonder if there’ll be pokemon from Johto and Hoenn that you can catch in the wild. Like Aipom, and Wailmer (My favourite Johto and Hoenn Pokemon).

The Pokemon Black & White 2 sucked because not only do you have to start over again but they have a new main person you play as but your in the same region as the game before. It would have been better if you could just transfer your save from the first game and continue it in the next.

With that said how do you expect this to be good? Can you chose who to play as from every other game already made? Can you chose any starter pokemon in every region? Can you go into every region? If not then there’s no point in playing it.

The only good reason I can think of for why Nintendo won’t make an MMO is that something like that where kids can chat needs to be moderated. That seems like a big responsibility, and the company probably doesn’t want to hire a team of staff to make sure everything stays G-rated 24/7. I mean, God forbid they had some kind of sexual predator incident or something on their hands.

i play this game a lot and trying to find more pokemon but one thing i can tell you is i am the biggest pokemon fan ever well not when i am dead

Firstly, I’d like to wag my finger at those fools who left out like half of the team rocket speech.

To denounce the evils of Truth and Love

To extend our reach to the stars above

Team rocket blasting off at the speed of light

Surrender now or prepare to fight

    and THEN they introduce themselves…

Secondly, I believe that Nintendo is missing out on truckloads of money they could be making with a Pokémon MMO. An MMO is an obvious and logical next step, people are dying to play Pokémon online with their friends. Can you imagine how much fun it would be to 2v2 battle with friends or to actually search with your friends side by side in the tall grass for rare Pokémon? I get a hard on just thinking about it.

As for that comment regarding sexual predators, that kind of stuff can be avoided with a short disclaimer and a few parental controls for the younger players.

That is an excellent point that I don’t think anyone has ever considered. Despite how many older teenagers and adults play the game, the target audience is STILL for 8 year olds. We just refused to grow up, but that doesn’t mean that Nintendo should treat us special when there are generations of children that are discovering pokemon for themselves. Making an MMO for the next big series would rob those kids of the same special memories we had as children. How selfish we are.

  • Kevvyy

    Chime Chime! =D

  • J

There shouldn’t have to be parental controls on a game targeted mainly for kids in the first place, and kids shouldn’t be playing games in which they can interact with strangers over the Internet. It just doesn’t make sense for Nintendo to make a Pokémon MMO, I’m afraid. Hypothetically, if they did make one, there’d be an age limit of 12 or 13, and there’d still have to be moderators on duty at all times. Sexual predators are a worst-case scenario, but children need supervision anyway. A disclaimer telling parents that it’s all up to them to monitor their kids’ gaming isn’t good enough. That would be totally irresponsible of Nintendo, but they would never do that because they’ve always bent over backward to settle even the most ridiculous complaints from parents. Unfortunately, the whole thing seems like more trouble than it’s worth for Nintendo. I just don’t don’t ever see it happening, and I can understand why.

  • J

I think “selfish” is a bit harsh, but, yes, it’s unreasonable to
expect Nintendo to make an MMO for a franchise primarily targeted
at preadolescents. I mean, if they’re not old enough to sign up for
Facebook, they’re not old enough to be playing an MMO either. It would
be unwise for Nintendo to create an online program that would enable
kids to interact with all sorts of random strangers out there. All it
would take is one incident and an upset parent to ruin everything.

  • J

I actually played PokeMMO the other day, and there was a lot of vulgar and sexual language being used. I prefer Pokémon World Online. That MMO has a lot of technical issues, but at least the moderators are on top keeping things wholesome.

  • http://twitter.com/seattlesonsbase seattlesonsbaseball

I’ve always wondered why Pokemon wasn’t made into a MMO like WoW or EQ. It would be so successful. Someone needs to tell Nintendo that they are falling quickly behind their competition and something like a Pokemon MMO would be a major boost for them. I’ve got so many ideas on this that it’d be so much fun! Here’s to wishing Nintendo wakes the @#$% up!

  • http://twitter.com/seattlesonsbase seattlesonsbaseball

    Absolutely!

You guys forgot to denounce the evils of truth and love. To extend our reach to the stars above…

  • likalaruku

I found FOUR separate Pokemon MMOs before stumbling onto this site. I suspect that they pretty all much look identical & run off ROMs. There’s a lot of really good map makers; it’d be awesome if they just made entirely new environments to play in, since a good chunk of the games are remakes of remakes.

  • likalaruku

You know what they say “Call of Duty: Aims at adults, lures in children. Pokemon: Aims at children, lures in adults.” I suspect the majority of people playing Scarlet Blade, most MOBAs, & any MMO with an overly obnoxious community is made up mostly of 13 year old boys.

  • likalaruku

Not a spoof, but it is technically a hack. That PETA protest game was a spoof.

  • likalaruku

A legit 3D MMO following Pokemon rules would bring new life into MMORPGs.
