The Fastest Adopted Gadget of the Past 50 Years Isn’t the Cellphone, Or Even the Desktop PC

It’s the boombox. The boombox. This startling revelation was brought to light in a paper in the Journal of Management and Marketing Research. The conclusion is the result of checking the overall level of adoption of a variety of new technologies by the 7th year of their existence. The numbers show that the boombox was number one. For a little context, not only did it beat out the cellphone and the desktop computer but also every other variety of mobile music devices, of which I think we can all agree, the boombox is by far the least efficient and the most annoying.

Now, it’s important to consider the time of introduction of course, especially when considering how the boombox managed to overtake seemingly better options. By the time the portable CD player came out, most people probably already had a boombox. Still, it’s a little surprising. It’s also worth noting, as The Atlantic’s Alexis Madrigal points out, that the top five all have to do entirely with media consumption, and hardly at all with media creation.

The real question is what’ll be up there a few decades down the line. If I had to guess, I’d say smartphones (as opposed to cellphones in general) and tablets. Maybe the HDTV. Also probably 2 or 3 things I can’t think of or that haven’t been invented yet. But what do I know? Whatever the case, one thing’s for sure; I hope number 1 isn’t lame.

I’m a bit skeptical just because ‘boom box’ is a very nebulous term.  It could include a lot of items from the single-unit home stereo that Andi is carrying down to hand-held unit.

If it is accurate, it wouldn’t be entirely surprising.  There really wasn’t anything like it before, so there was the “OOO! NEW THING!” buyers, plus the “OOO! BAND WAGON!” buyers, plus the “OOO! ANOTHER WAY TO ANNOY THE GENERAL PUBLIC!” buyers in addition to people who really wanted portable music.

You must young… The BoomBox was a cultural shaper back in the days, you know like them Painter pants. :p

The boombox wasn’t just the ipod of it’s day although it was similar in that music was finally portable in a form that had listenable quality (listen to a 1960-70′s portable AM radio to see what I mean).

The reason it was better was that in addition to being a status symbol is was a social way of listening to music.  Instead of sitting in the corner of the coffee shop alone, isolated from the world by white earbuds you could pop a boombox down in the middle of an empty parking lot and start a dance party.
Try that with your smartphone or tablet.

Agreed.  Boombox is pretty specific.  They may have been varying sizes, but if you didn’t put it on your shoulder at some point, it wasn’t a boombox.

The HDTV has a little help from the Federal Government! Luckily we all weren’t required to transition to the Boombox from other music players. :-)

I mean, the boom box is a fairly ubiquitous item because it isn’t as restrictive in pricing as the personal computer, or other gadgets. Looking at the top 5 items shows clearly (provided that you have other necessary peripheral components, i.e., CDs/tapes for the boom box, a TV set for the VCR and DVD players, etc) that they all share a fairly small price tag, which would indicate a possible correlation between affordability and adoption.

“If you didn’t put it on your shoulder at some point” – that’s so awesome. Not entirely sure that was the definition used in the study, but it should have been listed as a function, for certain.

What category does mp3 players and/or iPods fall into.  Methinks either might be higher.

No we cannot all agree that it was both annoying and least effective, boom box boomed out music, check, annoying, only if you didn’t like jamz. It was better hearing a boom box then hearing cars zipping by or loud people talking.

The Boombox allowed for the creation of looped sounds. This led to the creation of DJing, hiphop, breakdancing, etc. I think that’s media creation?
