Square Enix Confirms Final Fantasy VII to Come to PC (Again)

If you don’t already own it, or have only watched your friends play it because you opted to get a Nintendo 64 so you could play Zelda, and also didn’t snatch up the digital versions available on the PS3 and PSP, the beloved Final Fantasy VII is headed for a PC re-release sometime soon. Square Enix hasn’t given an exact date, but they have divulged where you can snag the re-release, and what extra features it’ll boast.

No, it’s not coming to Steam. Sorry. Square has announced that the re-release will be made exclusively available on its own Square Enix Store. However, that unfortunate news comes with the news that the re-release will have some new features not found in any version of FFVII. The re-release will feature 36 achievements, a character booster that seems to be some sort of stat editor to allow for easier play, and the hilariously titled cloud saves, which act as standard saves on the cloud, but you know, cloud, huh huh.

If you already own the old Final Fantasy VII PC release from way back in 1998, this’ll at least be somewhat thrust into modern times, as it’ll be available in digital download and have cloud saves. The graphics probably won’t be updated too much, if at all, but the game should run much better on modern day computers, which anyone who had the original PC release will be happy about after suffering through the poor performance.

With this PC re-release, it seems Square will do just about anything with the FFVII universe other than make a direct sequel RPG, or remake the entire game from the ground up with modern technology. Even though one part of the FFVII extended universe was actually very good, it’s still kind of a shame to see we now have a prequel, a side story, a direct-to-DVD direct sequel CGI movie, and this re-release, rather than the thing fans have been clamoring for. Oh well, something is better than nothing, right? And hey, Final Fantasy IX is better anyway. Yeah, I said it, but so did everyone else (scroll down a bit).

FF6 was and still is the best Final Fantasy imo.  I still need to replay 9.  I beat it when it came out and like others then I just forgot about it… doesn’t really say much about the game.

FFVI and FFIX are my favorites, with IX edging out VI a little bit. Metacritic has IX, then XII rated the best, for what it’s worth.

ffIX is not better…. and nobody in this post has said so. if anything the only other game that can compare story and gameplay with FFVII is FFIV and yes i played all of them and 6 was ok no where near as good as people claim it is. 6 may be a good game but i honestly thought it had alot of drawn out and sometimes boring aspects of the game. final fantasy 4 kept throwing new ideas at you left and right. what is this your main character is suddenly completly different now? same basis for ffVII it had the exact same elements of suprise action and innovation. as much as it may sucked one of the best parts of the game is when you lose aeris as a party member. especially if you stop to grind xp every now and then grinding to level 25-30 before aeris died meant i lost a valuable party member as since she was a healer type i was stuck putting tifa a lower level back into the rotation. then you even lose cloud from the party for a while forcing you to cope withlosing one of your strongest party members. all of that with great xp/skill/weapon systems both FFIV and FFVII had innovated, inspired and continued to awe me every time i play them. i simply cannot say the same for any other final fantasy game they have made.

I was actually really excited about this, until I saw it won’t be released on Steam.  Come on, Steam is great.  Nobody cares about your silly store.  We want it on Steam.

I still have my PS1 whats the point of buying FF7 again (for the 4th time…. kept damaging discs) if the only upgrade is achievements? I already complete everything when i replay it as it is why would i bother doing it so every one knows i did. When Square remakes it with up to date graphics or a true console sequel give me a call till then i’ll pass. ff12 was the last good FF and it was only good because it followed the crappola left behind by X (whiney actor ruined everything) X-2 (i was happy tidus died why do i want to save him… while being in a girl pop group?) XI…. (this counts as an ff? so does 14 right, even though it all but flopped and is pc only…)

(Yes i know the actor voiced Vaan too, but he didnt whine the whole time doing it like Tidus.
