Freaks and Geeks Coming Back to TV on IFC

Rejoice, people who enjoy the best television program ever made about the awkward and glorious high school experience! And also the college sequel they made which was pretty good too. That’s right: Judd Apatow’s Freaks and Geeks and Undeclared are both coming to IFC.

And Freaks and Geeks is coming soon, really soon: You’ll be able to watch it beginning this Friday at 11pm EDT/PDT. You’ll have to wait until the fall for Undeclared, though.

It’s a shame it’s taken this long: Freaks and Geeks was cancelled after one season of so-so ratings on NBC from 1999-2000, when it had the misfortune of being pitted against ABC’s super-popular Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? Likewise, Undeclared was a one-season wonder, airing on FOX from 2001-2002. Both series have been available on DVD for some time now, but aside from the odd Fox Family rerun early in the decade, we’ve been out of luck.

Like many cult shows, Freaks and Geeks is one of those things about which one says “you really have to watch it to get it”; suffice it to say that even though you’ve watched a zillion high school dramedies about misfits, this one is funnier and feels far more real (and yes, painfully awkward at times) than most. While there are far longer clips we could embed (you can find ’em on YouTube) this Halloween montage is as good an entry point as any for the series; Bill’s Bionic Woman costume FTW.
