Once Upon A Time Gandhi Wrote A Letter To Hitler

What do an iconic peace-loving protester and easily the most hated man in all of human history have to do with each other? The answer is simple: a plea that was never heard. Mahatma Gandhi wrote to Adolf Hitler on July 23, 1939 to ask him to keep World War II from happening. At the time, Hitler was already progressing through Europe, having invaded Czechoslovakia earlier that spring. The letter never reached Hitler, (for unknown reasons) and it is hard to image that it would have had much impact if it did.

Gandhi wrote two letters to Hitler, which are on display at Mani Bhavan, where Gandhi lived in Mumbai from 1917-1934. These letters are a known, but still shocking, part of the history of WWII. Certainly, they make you wonder what could have been, and even spark speculation about what the world leaders of our time really think about the current state of the world.

obvious forgery why would an Indian man right a letter to a German man in English

  • 60s Hippie

    James42 is correct.

But even so, if the letter had been written, men of destruction do not listen…
Isn’t that happening today, even in our own backyard as we stare at this webpage?

WAR! What it is! What is it good for?!…

English is the language of trade and culture in India. Most educated Indians speak better English than you speak Hindi.

    M. K. Gandhi was a lawyer, and it is common knowledge that he spoke English very  well.

I know that Gandhi was an extremely peaceful man and didn’t posses a hateful quark in his entire body, but I still find it interesting to see the word “friend” (or any form of the word) associated with Adolf Hitler from someone not part of the Nazi regime.

  • James42

does what you are saying really matter he is still pleading with a German man (not an English man) to prevent a war in english, part of what makes this forgery so believable is the appeal to probability (a peaceful man appealing for peace). I find it far more likely a Lawyer would try to appeal to German man in German.

I tried to respond logically to an article I found false. You ruined my argument by responding, please for the sake of logic SHUT THE FUCK UP.

Duh!! Gandhi spoke English and what would he do find a German translator in India!! Obviously if the letter would have reached Hitler would have the tools to get it translated. I’m amazed when people are so cynical about facts….

  • dave

james42: this letter’s not fake.  look it up.  there’s thousands of references to it and pictures of it up in the museum.  this is not the only place it’s documented on the internet.  do research.  don’t assume you know best.  you come off as kind of an idiot when you do.

Gandhi studied law in London, England.  He was a lawyer.  For the record, English is one of the official languages & language of commerce in India.

  • Indian

I don’t think Gandhi knew German, and it was probably tougher for Gandhi to find a German translator in India with the limited resources and restrictions from the British at the time, and he probably figured it is easier for Hitler to find an English translator than a Gujarati or Hindi translator (even though possible, English as a second language was probably spoken by more of his staff members than Hindi or Gujarati).

  • Indian

Gandhi called his enemies “Friend” too.

  • Jack B

I heard in the 2nd letter he dared Hitler to go through with it.

  • Gandhian

he worked for the cause of humanity……he referred to his enemies as friends and said that he would not raise his hand against them even if he had the power to do it….he would and could fight his enemies through his suffering. This is why he referred to Hitler as “friend”…

  • HowardG

… err is that your IQ James?

obviously you don’t understand history.  Gandhi didn’t speak German, but he spoke English.  And the letter would be much more likely translated correctly from English to German than Indian to German, considering many in Germany spoke English or had a working knowledge of it.

Oh good grief. It was not uncommon at all for 2 people of different languages to converse in a common language, which was not native to either of the people.  Here Gandhi chose the language that would most easily be translated for or even understood by Hitler.  Its not a freaking forgery.  Moreover, the signature can be verified.  Or is that a forgery too?

    James42… you’re an idiot.

  • Dirk

Have you ever listened or read an Indian trying to communicate in English?

  • Ripdegr

If You wish to be heard Yuo should tell that lenguage which is easyly to understand for a person in front of You. That is a rule. That`s why English people are not welkomed in whole of the world. They didn`t try to something new but only their english. Peace and Love!

  • Flameofthefire

I’d like to see the second letter, and hopefully hitlers response if he gave one, the conversation is incomplete without it

  • guest

    don’t feed the trolls

  • ed

The language you are referring to is “Hindi” not “Indian.”

  • Kari

    Matthew, what language is Indian?

Thus the success of pacifism is documented.
