Girl Asks Valve to Hire Her via What is Probably the Most Charming Job Application Ever [Video]

Erin Michael Vondrak really wants a job at Valve, but after sending in her job application three times, she has yet to receive a call from the purveyor of portals. So, she went ahead and made what is probably the most charming job application ever, a video full of custom animation and an adorable song in which Vondrak confesses that she’d do anything short of swim with giant squid in order to work at Valve. Now, I haven’t looked over her résumé, but I think maybe Valve should, considering they’re a company who is supposed to take creativity very seriously, and taking the above video job application into consideration, Vondrak probably deserves a look.

So… you think they should consider her.  No formal training.  No previous work.  No programming experience.  No artistic talent.  No direction.  No schooling.  Nothing at all that companies look for in employees.  But she made a cute youtube video… yeah no.  She’s a dumb bitch that doesn’t deserve the job.  Sadly the comments on her video are pretty spot on.  She shouldn’t even be considered.

If you watched the video, she said she’d be perfectly happy being a food gopher. Even if your assessment of “no artistic talent” and judgment of her intelligence based were true, I’m pretty sure she could go out and get sandwiches for Valve, not to mention that she made a charming song, and a charming song is one of the things that launched a certain Valve franchise beyond the realm of gaming.

Her video is not good. But it is not offensive to garner such negative responses. But, it wouldn’t be YouTube otherwise.

Considered for what? You have no idea what job she wants or what her skills are. Why would you assume she wants to be a programmer? Maybe she has 10 years’ experience in sales and marketing or speaks fluent Portuguese (since Valve is currently hiring translators.)

I’m confident in saying that you’ve never been in a hiring position. I would have called this girl in a second. Her enthusiasm alone is worth a conversation.

Plus, from Valve’s web site: We pursue talent from all walks of life, with a wide range of skills, because more than any other game company, we value creativity and innovation.

Man, that’s pathetic. I really feel sorry for her. The video isn’t cute. It’s pitiful. If it was a guy doing the video, people would trash him, and rightfully so. She has a vagina, so it’s “cute”. Whatever. The art, animation, composition, timing, story… everything about it is just subpar. It’s like showing up to a game studio with free pizza and doing a song & dance, “Hire me because I’m desperate and will let you take advantage of my naivety!”

I personally thought it was cute video. Granted, she may not have the skills Valve is looking for, but jesus christ, the comments on that video are incredibly cruel and uncalled for.

…then again, I shouldn’t expect anything less from Youtube comments.

    *a cute video.

    Hnnng, typos.

    Adorable.

Otherwise: Wow, nice comment thread. Oh well, I guess haters gonna hate…

Regardless; if she applies this kind of drive, creativity and resourcefulness to all of her interests, she will probably win at whatever she chooses in life.

It may take a little time, but she will.

Also: There ARE ways to do -similar- things as a Guy.

It would just be a slight tweak in tone.

Ex: If Merton from Chatroulette were mashed up with Merlin Mann, minus Merlin’s snark,

throw in some rudimentary illustration+animation skills,

& a bit of the Freddie Wong-style charm:

Then you would have One SUPERFREAK of a [guy's] video resume.

Well it seems you are just as naive as Erin if you think catering can lead into game development.
