Go Daddy is No Longer on the U.S. Congressional List of SOPA Supporters

One probably could’ve easily seen the backlash that a domain registrar would’ve faced had they supported SOPA. It’d be similar to a game developer calling all of their customers dumb jerks, or an athlete going on national television and saying that he hates the city for which he plays, and the fans of the team he’s on. So, when Go Daddy came out in support of SOPA, the Internet was quick to react negatively, of course, something that Go Daddy, somehow, didn’t seem like they figured would happen. It’s been a short, though exciting roller coaster that shoots the riders out from zero to sixty in two seconds from gate, but now, Go Daddy is officially off the U.S. Congressional list of SOPA supporters.

The thing is, will anyone care? The Internet has a notoriously short memory, but in certain cases, it never forgets. Considering Go Daddy is a popular domain registrar and SOPA is a hot-button topic that directly and negatively affects the Internet, it wouldn’t be surprising if the Internet’s short term memory remained intact regarding Go Daddy’s mind-boggling support of SOPA, and it’s sudden flipflop on the issue after the negative media attention.

Either way, whether they’ve removed themselves from the U.S. Congressional list of SOPA supporters because they suddenly feel SOPA is a bad thing, or if they’ve been removed from the list simply as a somewhat shady public relations attempt to restore their image, without actually being against SOPA, we’ll probably never know. At least they’re off the list.

You can check out the current list of SOPA supporters here.

changes nothing, thats just for show, one does not have to make their intentions known to the public, to still accomplish their intended goal!

I have more than 100 domains with godaddy. I received the emails from some people to leave them. Before I do that? I called Godaddy to verify and the statement I got? They are not supporting SOPA. And that’s good enough for me. I have been godaddy customer for more than 10 years. I never had any problem. They are cheap and good people. They are secure too. So why would I move my domains?

when i transferred my domains to namecheap i email the pres of godaddy – i got some vague nothingness of an email back with a link to their “new “position”.
i wrote him back and said

“over the years, i have put up with the poor UI on your website because you were cheap
it cost me a lot of time because i would have to temporarily take over my client’s accounts to make simple changes like DNS

and i put up with the sneaky way you set up the checkout so an inexperienced person would end up buying services they didn’t need. (another waste of my time trying to unsnarl duplicate mail servers…)
    but SOPA?
    you haven’t listened.
you made some vague reference to some vague position
that was nothing more than obfuscation

we’re not stupid, we know you backed off because you are losing business

and it is the final straw for me.”
    he hasn’t written back…

I agree with andrew.  I moved my business domain to network solutions yesterday.

This is akin to one’s spouse not only cheating but working with his mistress to take all of your assets and then him turning around and saying “but I promise I’m not seeing her anymore.” TOO LITTLE TOO LATE. Damage is already done. Time for divorce.

I have 20 domains I am moving tomorrow with godaddy. Besides SOPA, which they supported up until they couldn’t afford to (showing ignorance in the process), they use blatantly sexist advertising, and have an ignorant owner who kills elephants for fun, then brags about it. Oh, and well documented stories of them preventing you from leaving by submitting missing registrar info. On top of all that, there is the craptastic UI that tricks people into buying unneeded products and services.

SOPA was the last straw – it’s not worth my $1/domain savings. I’d rather pay MORE to not get screwed by a sexist, ignorant company. I moved to Dreamhost for my domains, and they have also been an amazing host for over two years for me.

We’ve got a list of supports to SOPA; maybe it’s time we see if everyone keeps their stance or crumbles like GoDaddy to the people who keep these businesses alive, us. Boycott em :D

I am unable to find out the new company’s name, as they have registered it
under GoDaddy’s Domain by Proxy service. When I called GoDaddy and the Domain
by Proxy Company, both refuse to give me information. Similarly, when I emailed
the tech contact’s email address listed in the domain’s new whois information,
    I receive no answer.
