I Bet You Really Wanted To See The Goliath Spider Mating Dance [Video]

What do do when you happen to have two of the largest spiders in the world just laying around? You try to make more of them, of course! At least that’s what the San Diego Zoo is trying to do with their Goliath Bird Eating Spider, the spider so terrifying they put “bird eating” in its name.

Mating isn’t easy for these spiders, though. For the males, the courtship dance is part of seduction and part insurance since it is not unusual for females to eat their mates. Fortunately, zoo officials remained on hand through the, uh, “encounter” to make sure no one got digested.

The zoo is hopeful that through mating experiments like these, they’ll be able to keep a robust captive population of bird eaters and not take more out of the wild. Of course, there are other things you can do with extra goliath spiders.

Hope you like insects and other creepy-crawlies, then…

Many times the female will eat the male to ensure she has enough nutrients to support the egg-maturation and -laying processes (both take significantly more energy than basal life functions).  Lack of these nutrients may lead to 0 spider-babies.  Hope they’ve compensated for this nutrition-wise for the female.

I hate all insects, but I especially hate spiders and scorpions, those two friggin species should be annihilated from the earth completely.

    1. they’re creepy as hell looking.

    2. Most of em are poisonous to the point of death.

Two perfectly good reasons to destroy them all with a flamethrower!!!

I guess the “spiders eat insects” implication went over your head.

Two species?  Which two species?  There are numerous species of spiders and numerous species of scorpions (none of which are insects, btw).

    2.  ”Most”?  Define “most”.  Numbers, please.  By death I assume you mean “death to humans at typically injected venom” which…um.  no.

And they say ignorance is bliss.  Thank you for the “fear of the unknown” demonstration, there.

You are honestly the first person to seriously partake in the defense of a frikkin bug and be TOTALLY serious about it, like the idea of killing EVERY spider or scorpion on the planet is even plausible.  Not to mention who gives a shit what species of spider or scorpion do I find SPECIFICALLY horrifying, the last time I checked if someone is scared of a ghost, they don’t specify a demonic spirit, friendly ghost, ancient ghost, modern ghost… THEY SIMPLY MEAN GHOSTS! Same goes for bugs, I personally hate all BUGS, INSECTS, ARACHNIDS… WHATEVER you want to call them, but I hate spiders, ALL KINDS and I hate SCORPIONS ALL KINDS.

Simple as that, I wasn’t serious about killing your little buddies(apparently) and was only joking, so leave my ignorant brain(apparently people are ignorant and fear the unknown if they hate all spiders, I guess people with fear of Sharks or Bees must be total morons to you) and go hangout with your bug collection or whatever hobby or attachment you clearly have for these disgusting creepy crawlies… Sheesh get a life!

Nope. Nope. Bugs are great. I will happily talk about the excellence of a spider and mean it. You seem kind of unpleasant, though. Also, while it only really makes sense to be afraid of bees if you’re allergic, being afraid of sharks is pretty smart because they’ll kill you.

    Unlike this spider.

    Hey Donutz
Maybe you were not paying attention in school….neither spiders nor scorpions are insects.
