Google Videos Shutting Down

Google Video, Google’s attempt at a video-hosting service, is being shut down. Google sent out an email to users who had previously uploaded a video to the service, letting them know that as of April 29, 2011, the service will no longer host any more videos. People will be able to download Google-hosted videos up until May 13, 2011, and Google is encouraging users to re-download and upload their Google-hosted videos to YouTube, which Google bought for $1.65 billion back in 2006. Google Video stopped allowing uploads a couple of years ago, though the service still hosted previously uploaded videos.

Dear Google Video User,

Later this month, hosted video content on Google Video will no longer be available for playback. Google Video stopped taking uploads in May 2009 and now we’re removing the remaining hosted content. We’ve always maintained that the strength of Google Video is its ability to let people search videos from across the web, regardless of where those videos are hosted. And this move will enable us to focus on developing these technologies further to the benefit of searchers worldwide.

On April 29, 2011, videos that have been uploaded to Google Video will no longer be available for playback. We’ve added a Download button to the video status page, so you can download any video content you want to save. If you don’t want to download your content, you don’t need to do anything. (The Download feature will be disabled after May 13, 2011.)

We encourage you to move to your content to YouTube if you haven’t done so already. YouTube offers many video hosting options including the ability to share your videos privately or in an unlisted manner. To learn more go here.

Here’s how to download your videos:

Go to the Video Status page.
To download a video to your computer, click the Download Video link located on the right side of each of your videos in the Actions column.

Once a video has been downloaded, “Already Downloaded” will appear next to the Download Video link.

If you have many videos on Google Video, you may need to use the paging controls located on the bottom right of the page to access them all.

Please note: This download option will be available through May 13, 2011.

Thank you for being a Google Video user.

Sincerely,

The Google Video Team

The first thing that crossed my mind after reading this post was worry about the years’ worth of “Charlie Rose” archive which have existed on Google: Video since they started uploading every show.

(Back in the day, you could watch for free or you could “own” a copy for ninety-nine cents.)

“Charlie Rose” has been uploading some to Hulu recently, but it’s not every episode (just 15 total) and there’s no multi-year archive. It’s no where near the same.

For an example of this archive’s historical importance, I suggest going to CharlieRose.com and search for one of your personal favorites, Milton Friedman, Lou Reed or anyone.

Somebody needs to make certain this archive is protected. As a blogger and a blog commenter, I can’t say enough about this valuable resource.

Okay, does anyone else see this trend with Google?

    1) See what others are producing (YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, etc)
    2) Try to mimic all of these other products
    3) Fail miserably and shut down the mimics

I really like Google (although I think soon I will have to add a “d” to that) but I kind of wish they would focus on something again.

At this point it seems like Google is shutting things down because people don’t use them….but ironically I don’t attempt to use new Google services anymore because I don’t think they’re stable.

Huh? Google owns YouTube and they’re shutting down Google Videos because it’s silly having both.
