Hillary Clinton Photoshopped Out of Iconic Situation Room Photo

We write about Photoshop ridiculousness all the time, but this instance is a little different. A orthodox Hasidic newspaper called Der Tzitung has wiped Secy. of State Hillary Clinton and Counterterrorism Director Audrey Tomason out of the now-famous photo of US government officials watching the raid on Osama bin Laden’s Pakistani compound, thanks to its editorial policy never to print pictures of women. Unsurprisingly, some people are not OK with this.

Silly Bandz Are So Over

Future economists, heed this lesson of supply and demand: Silly Bandz, which were the king of trends just a few months ago, are now seriously and totally out. [Geekosystem editor’s note: POGs, however, are still so in.) And it’s all because the market has been overloaded with them since they started getting absurdly popular.

USA Today reports that retailers from major gas station chains to independent toy stores all over the country look on the bands as eyesores instead of the beacons of hope they once were. BCP Imports, the company that makes the bracelets, did $200 million in business this year. Silly Bandz were even named one of America’s Hottest Brands by Advertising Age. Now? People can’t seem to get the things out of their stores.

Famous Fashion Designer Karl Lagerfeld Thinks Facebook is a Physical Object

Famous fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld, who works as the creative director for Chanel, thinks Facebook is an iPad, or at the very least an object.

Lagerfeld:

“Facebook is a flawless object. It’s for me like a Brancusi. As I told you, I got one as a gift in gold — in white gold. And the BlackBerry too, and the iPod. I have all those from a gift, I wouldn’t buy it. But somebody gave me all those things in white gold. They are beautiful objects on the table — they are stunning. I don’t use them because I don’t have to use them.”

Via context, we assume this “object” he calls “Facebook” and has in “white gold” is in fact an iPad. Awesome.

Google to Launch New Fashion Venture

Styleite:

Last week, Styleite wrote about an invite we received to an event hosted by Google and headlined, “High Tech Fuses With High Fashion,” which led us (andevery other invitee) to believe that the web giant was launching some sort of fashion e-tailer. Today, WWD confirms the news via several sources privvy on Google’s plans.

From what we can tell, it sounds like Google is taking a page out of ShopStyle and Polyvore’s book. The site will allow users to “create and share their own personalized shop by selecting style preferences and the looks, brands and items they love” (Polyvore), while linking out to a pre-existing e-tailer like Saks,ShopBop, or Yoox for purchase.

The Gap Backpedals, Is Now Crowd-Sourcing Its New Logo

Yesterday, The Gap revealed a new logo on its website, and the Internet went nuts over how terrifyingly bad it is. Now, it looks like The Gap is backpedaling and shifting their logo design to a crowdsourced contest:

“Thanks for everyone’s input on the new logo! We’ve had the same logo for 20+ years, and this is just one of the things we’re changing. We know this logo created a lot of buzz and we’re thrilled to see passionate debates unfolding! So much so we’re asking you to share your designs. We love our version, but we’d like to see other ideas. Stay tuned for details in the next few days on this crowd sourcing project.”

Australia’s Next Top Model Reveals Wrong Winner On Live TV

Oof, talk about wanting a do-over. Australia’s Next Top Model Cycle 6 held a live finale Tuesday night, where host Sarah Murdoch unveiled the winner to both the audience and show’s viewers on live television. Unfortunately, for the winner, the loser, and Murdoch, she accidentally announced the wrong one — and took a few minutes to realize it.

Katy Perry Outfit Gets Her Kicked Off of Sesame Street

Katy Perry was supposed to star on the New Year’s Eve episode of Sesame Street, but apparently the cleavage-revealing dress she wore for the taping isn’t sitting right with parents.

It was after Sesame Street posted a segment of Perry’s episode to YouTube that the complaints started rolling in. TMZ reports:

The song made its way to YouTube Monday and racked up nearly a million views. But some parents started complaining her cleavage was too front and center. We’ve learned producers have decided not to air the song on the show.

Finally: Fake Eyelashes Made of Fly Legs

First there were Christian Dior branded contacts. Then came Lady Gaga’s anime lenses. And we thought there was no way for eye-related products to be any more bizarre. But then we saw these.

One young British artist, Jessica Harrison, designed her very own set of fake lashes made entirely out of fly’s legs.

Calvin Klein Jumps on the QR Bandwagon

Calvin Klein has just stepped their multimedia marketing game up. The mega brand has replaced three of their billboards, two in New York, one in Los Angeles, with red and white QR codes — there’s not a single Lara Stone to be found. And a QR code — if you, like us, were wondering — is basically a two-dimensional bar code that can be read by most smart phones equipped with a camera. So what do you get when you take a photo of the billboard?

A 40 second video of Lara Stone “frolicking with four male models,” says Racked.

According to Mashable, QR codes are becoming increasingly popular, particularly in Japan, and advertisers are hoping to co-opt the trend as a way to increase user engagement — or, if you ask us, force them to “see” the ad in the first place.
