Homeless Man with Radio Voice Offered Free House, Job with the Cleveland Cavaliers

Ted Williams, the Columbus-area homeless man whose amazing radio voice talent we highlighted yesterday, will not be homeless for much longer: In a radio interview on local station WNCI today, Williams revealed that the Cleveland Cavaliers had offered him a full-time announcing job and a house.

In the less than 24 hours since his video exploded online, the “radio man” has gotten lots of other offers and tons of goodwill:

Before the Cavs made their bid, the station said a group of credit unions offered Williams a contract worth up to $10,000; a caller claiming to rep MTV expressed interest in having him guest-announce a show; and callers who said they were the voiceover actors behind plugs for “The Simpsons” and “Entertainment Tonight” said they wanted him to compete on their upcoming “America’s Next Voice” — where the prize includes a home studio.

We’ve seen viral video stars blow up on the Internet, but I can’t think of one that has taken off this quickly or to this good effect: It helps that in addition to having such a pronounced, unusual talent, Williams seems like a really good guy eager to turn his life around. Hopefully, his Internet fame and offer from the Cavs will help him do just that.

CBS News clip below (and you can bet that in addition to telling his story, Williams shows off his radio voice):

This story is great, because the gentlemen is getting a hand up not a hand out. I wish him all the best.

This is still an amazing story. Best of luck to him.

I just saw this and it moved me so much. Its so rare to see good things happen in our days to good people.
    God Bless talent and goodness.

Ahh, I gotta be that one.
First off, I’m glad this guy is clean and sober and I’m happy that he’s gone from homeless to having a job. That is wonderful and I in no way am taking that away.

Sorry to be cynical… but my point is failure is failure. His addictions were his failures. He deserves to be rewarded for cleaning up and getting back on track, yes. But to claim he has ‘unusual talent’ and call him the ‘homeless man with a radio voice’ is emotional hyperbole. Its the other way around: He’s a radio man who became an addict. His story is inspiring, but not amazing or miraculous.
I guess what I’m trying to say is… if a homeless woman stood up and started doing perfect ballet moves, and then you found out this person has never danced ballet in their life, that would be unusual and amazing.
If, instead, the homeless woman explained to you that she had been a ballet dancer all her life and succumbed to some addiction… you would feel sorry for her rather than be in awe. A part of you, in the back of your mind, would think its what you get for losing control of your life.

Anyway, cynical or not… the guy seems like a genuinely thankful person with an excellent attitude. Like I said, his story is inspiring, and I’m not trying to degrade that in any way.

you walk in his shoes for a day and we’ll talk…

Maybe I’m cynical too, but having lived with an addict the ‘bless you’s’ and ‘blessings’ rolling off his tongue, the talk of ‘miracles’ are all too reminiscent of an addict about to go on a bender and relying on the ‘false sense of spirituality’ to garner sympathy. Granted, addiction is an illness — but until he successfully completes a detox / substance abuse program (in-patient, preferably) and remains clean and sober for at least 6 months while working as an intern with stringent accountability, nothing should be ‘given’ to him – job, house, etc. The soundbite of his, “I will buy you a Louis Vuitton bag” to his daughter to make up for his not being there says it all. These are all just material things thrust at him, meetings with celebrities, and everything he can milk it for. I’m not a Dr. Phil fan, but his offer to put him through rehab was exactly (and the only) thing needed to be ‘given’ to him. It was odd – but not if you’ve lived with an addict – how he himmed and hawed when the decision to go and check himself in needed to be made immediately… I think we – as the public – are being duped. We, as a society, want to believe in miracles and the ability in ourselves to help another, yet addiction is a very different beast in and of itself. Once it’s in the driver’s seat, there is nothing and nobody that it or the person hosting it would not throw under the bus in order to feed the need. In the earliest clips, he states he’s been clean and sober for six months; however, this is the tricky part of the addict… he may be off drugs, but he’s apparently still substituting alcohol for his addiction. The rationalization of one being totally different than the other has already taken place in his mind. I think by throwing EVERYTHING at him – including celebrity status – is setting him up for a huge fall. I hope that moderation is applied and we revisit him in a year from now and he is working, maintaining a household and clean and sober for a year. Otherwise, it may be us as a society that’s actually throwing him overboard in an ill thought out attempt to help.
