How to Set Google Custom Wallpaper
by Robert Quigley | 1:58 pm, June 4th, 2010
Two days ago, Google rolled out a Bing-like custom wallpaper feature that allows users to change the background on their Google homepage, a marked shift from the all-white minimalism that’s characterized the site since it first took over the Internet. Like many other Google releases, however, they said they’d roll the feature out gradually rather than giving it to users all at once.
Well, The Next Web has figured out how to activate Google wallpaper, whosoever you are.
Just click here and you’ll be taken to a login page where you type in your Google username and password. From there, you’ll be redirected to the Google homepage, where you can pick an image from Google’s galleries or upload an image of your own. If you want the above picture of a battle of good and evil between two cats, have at it.
A caveat: This only works on Google.com and not on any international Google domain, like google.ca or google.co.uk. If you’re overseas, you’ll have to go with google.us instead.

I’m not sure… I remember the nature of Google being clean, concise, and highly functional(?) Surely the background image thing is going against that nature?
I’ve been using Gazoomy (http://www.gazoomy.com) for a while and it’s really slick in comparison – moveable search bar, on-the-fly search results, background images that are scaled to your monitor, and some nice transparency effects and look and feel.
Fair enough, Google are trying to mimic what is a nice feature of Bing, but I still think they should keep things simple as that’s what most Google users appreciate.
But yeah, have a look at http://www.gazoomy.com/. If Google want to go down the snazzy route then maybe they should get some inspiration from the small fry…
