HP Officially Gives Up On webOS Phones and TouchPad

In the face of rumors that they might be abandoning webOS, HP stepped up and cleared the air: They are definitely abandoning webOS. HP has made the decision to discontinue everything that has to do with the TouchPad and webOS phones. Their press release, as quoted by TechCrunch, addresses the sitiuation this way:

HP reported that it plans to announce that it will discontinue operations for webOS devices, specifically the TouchPad and webOS phones. HP will continue to explore options to optimize the value of webOS software going forward.

While the statement makes it excruciatingly clear that HP wants absolutely nothing to do with webOS related hardware, it does seem to make it sound like they’d like to salvage whatever is left of webOS proper. There is still potential for webOS to be licensed out to people who have become fond of it and the potential for webOS to show up in devices that aren’t, ya know, webOS phones or the TouchPad. For the time being though, it’ll have to just kick around and hope that someone pays it the attention it deserves.

Checked out the HP Touch Pad a couple days ago, couldn’t understand the logic behind it.  Everyone wants either an iPad or a Google based tablet, so what were they thinking.

I can’t understand where they want to go…I heard the will retired from the pc market too…HP just sux ! Who’s beliving the iPad can replace a PC ? iPad get 2 yo pc 30 ! This tablet is a toy, and anyway Android will swallow the ipad as they did with iPhone. The Macbook still the best player in the game…I own 4 mac, and an Android tablet whitch is pretty cool for playing, surfing, watching youtube and movies, but there’s nothing more powerfull than my PC ! I can find 10 softwares when I find 1 for my mac (sometimes pretty old) …
Did you see the touchpad demo ? Have you seen the peering between the phone and the tablet ? This was absolutly brilliant… in fine I can’t understand the HP logic… As suggest in few articles the best for HP was to give WebOS for free, switch it to open source, sale devices with a low margin, and unlock…
