Tim Berners-Lee: Web Access Is a “Human Right”

“Access to the Web is now a human right … It’s possible to live without the Web. It’s not possible to live without water. But if you’ve got water, then the difference between somebody who is connected to the Web and is part of the information society, and someone who (is not) is growing bigger and bigger.”

–Tim Berners-Lee, creator of the World Wide Web, speaking at a recent MIT symposium.

What a load of crap. Using actual human rights doesn’t impose anything on other people. I have the right to free speech but not the right to make you listen. I have the right to worship as I wish but not to make you worship as I do. To exercise one’s “right” to internet access, one must have access to a computer, access to a modem, and access to an internet provider via phone or cable or whatever. None of those things are free. Further, if you insist everyone has a right to them, then some people will only be able to exercise that right by forcing others to pay for the computer, modem, etc.

If you want to argue internet access is becoming a necessity, that’s fine. Water is an even greater necessity, as Tim noted, but there’s no “right” to water or food or any other necessities. Just as there’s no right to internet access.

Good point, and it’s true that none of those things are free – but it is possible to access them without paying.

You can’t just “loan” someone’s water or chocolate cake for instance =)
