What Will Probably be the Best PSN Game Ever, Journey, Finally Gets Release Date, Price

After a very long, excruciating wait, thatgamecompany’s Journey has finally been dated and priced. The game will release on the PSN, soon-to-be dubbed SEN, on March 13, 2012 in the U.S., and will cost you a most likely very well spent $14.99. All signs point to this game being one of the best game releases in a long while, regardless of its cheap price tag and digital download only status, so you probably want to mark that date on your calendar, and hide an emergency $14.99 somewhere just in case.

The developer, thatgamecompany, brought us both flOw and Flower, two well-made, fun, pretty PSN games that might dictate what you think about Journey, but are nothing like Journey. Whereas flOw and Flower are simple and relatively relaxing, Journey looks to be an artful statement in the vein of Shadow of the Colossus. The story from the outset is simple enough, the player must travel to a mountaintop in the distance. Interestingly, the game will feature a multiplayer component that thrusts strangers into your world, without much communicative abilities, and you must learn to work together to achieve your goal. Thatgamecompany put it best on the PlayStation Blog posting, saying Journey “is an interactive parable, an anonymous online adventure to experience a person’s life passage and their intersections with other’s.”

The game looks incredible, especially for a downloadable title, and the three year development cycle certainly seems like the team put a lot of work into the adventure. Journey has been one of my most wanted titles ever since its announcement years ago, and is currently one of the only games of this year that I am actually looking forward to. Whether or not that speaks to the hype and promise surrounding Journey, or the state of the industry, you can be the judge on March 13 for only $14.99.

I’d say we should play together, but there’s no matchmaking, so I’ll meet you over by that sand dune in the game world’s desert. You know the one.

Is this on the PSP or the PS3?

It’s a PS3 game. If the PSP could handle graphics like that, Sony would not have needed to release the Vita :P.

You get plopped in the middle of a desert and have to make it to the mountain far off in the distance. I refuse to look at the beta videos or read previews, because that’s how much I don’t want to be spoiled, so I actually don’t know the specifics of what goes on in the desert.

I’m assuming it’s a platformer/puzzler/wandering kind of game. Like Shadow of the Colossus without the colossi.
