CBS News:

A gas explosion and fire erupted at a Connecticut power plant, resulting in what police described as “mass casualties,” CBS Affiliate WFSB reports.

At least two people were killed and as many as were 250 people injured, 4 critically, sources told WFSB. There are reports of people trapped under metal, concrete and steel. The explosion occurred just before 11:30 a.m. at the Kleen Energy plant on River Road in Middletown, and shook houses 10 miles away.

The Deputy Fire Marshall in Middletown said one side of the building had collapsed. He said 50 workers were in the section of the power plant where the explosion happened. The fire is reportedly now under control, and search teams are inside building where the main blast occurred to look for victims and/or trapped people.

Our thoughts are with the victims and their families.
